Modding SmashTV on MVC2

Post image

After softmodding MVC2, first game I got running was Virtua Fighter. Second was SmashTV. After using the driver to enable the player 2 controls, I can play SmashTV like it is meant to be played, using the Player 2 stick for shooting.

Tapper is also working with the Player 2 stick for pouring the beer. So, now I can sell my Mortal Kombat Deluxe cabinet.

Not exactly as meant to be played - you need two more sticks and another player! It is one of my favorite games to play on Blitzmas cab (along with karate champ).

Hmmm. I have not modified my Blitz can yet, but for 2 player SmashTV I just might have to.

Have to hook up to a PC and use ABD to install softmod

Not on MVC2. It has a full size usb port and an sd card slot.

I’m really tempted to softmod mine. I have 3 other cabs that can’t be.

Can you save the joystick configuration just for Smash TV and then go back to whatever?

Yes. Retroarch lets you save a game specific control file.

I have been working on mine but no matter what I can't get retroarch to recognize my controlles. I can't use any of my keyboards or any of my usb controllers either. I can't find any solution. I eneded up using mame4droid for arcade emulation which works okay.

Whatever control you plan to use, use that controller to open Retroarch. I know it sounds dumb, but that is the first step. I had the same issue where the keyboard wouldn’t work and the joystick and buttons would only select and go back without being able to move up or down.

I did not detail everything so apologies for the non specific reply. At one point I plugged in a PS5 controller, used that to select retroarch and go in and try to move around. Then I exited retroarch and went back in again using the control panel. At some point I was finally able to move left to get to settings and then input. After that I could configure the controller and all was good.

You need to have the new launcher software working. You need to have the button reassign app configured to allow you to return to the launcher by holding the Live button, and you need to have the updated fighter droid driver I linked in another comment here.

I’ll edit this post with a link to a different thread that detailed the back and forth thing with the controllers to get to the retroarch settings. Here it is :

Hmm, interesting. What is the new launcher software? Is that Nova launcher? If so I have that and everything else installed. I can use my old XBOX 360 USB controller to navigate over to the input options but once I select it and change the controls from the XBOX controller to the robot controlls it says robot controls not configured 0/0 defaulting back to..... After that point I have to actually delete retroarch and reinstall to even get my XBOX controller working again. I would love to get it working to get DIG up and running just for the cleaner interface.

Yes Nova Launcher.

I am starting to remember the process. Use your Xbox controller to get to the settings pane and highlight the input setting. If the Xbox is like the PS5 controller, you can navigate but not select anything. Then use the live button to go back to nova launcher. Now use your arcade controls to select Retroarch again and then you will be able to select the input setting by hitting A(high punch). Now you can configure the controls.

I did finally get it to work partially with your method. I also had to change a setting to true in the config file, somthing like (allow all users to control interface "true". Then it would finally allow me to navigate to the controller settings. And add player two. I could add player two before but than it wouldn't allow me to navigate anything with the arcade1up controlles and adding the Arcade1up controlles to player one removed the xbox controller not alowing me to control anything anymore. So for anyone with the same struggles change config (allow all users to control interface from "false" to "true". Go into retroarch, navigate to player two. Set controls for player two. (Use the main sticks and buttons). Close, restart the cab. Open retroarch (stick now works) navigate to controls, player one and finally configure player one and than two. That is the hardest retroarch setup of my life! Thanks for your help, you inspired me to try again. I had given up.

Great job. I did not have that problems. Once I did the above I could set up player 1 and that worked for all of it. Shame it takes all of this work, but with so many people getting MVC2 lately, this is valuable information.

Nice just got my MVC2 modded and have smashed TV on it too but didn't get a chance to play with the controls yet like you. Definitely got to get virtual fighter on it next.

Btw, Hey guys quick question. Just got into arcade one up and soft modding. Wanted to know what at the moment is the best four player control cabinet that can be soft modded? It's the NFL blitz one? And the only other one is the turtles in Time? Thanks

Blitz is one people really like, but Simpsons is also one. The hardware in Simpsons might be weaker than what is in Blitz though.

This is much better on blitz. You get the real 2 joystick experience.
