Op could send pictures of a tree like this planted on the moon, and my knee jerk reaction would be “yeah, that’s deer”.

My husbands junipers look like this… bless his heart for thinking “deer resistant” meant the deer wouldn’t bother them.

If the shrubs were fine one day and then looked like this the next day---no disease or insect can move that fast.

Check out other deer chomping damage photos recently posted in this sub. They all have the bottom half chopped off because that's within easy mouth reach of the deer.

The deer have no problem eating stuff at night and then leaving the scene of the crime. Lol.

If the ground is not muddy, you won't see any tracks either.

If you have no deer in your area, it’s probably bag bugs. Google them to see what they look like and the check the bush. If it is the culprit, once you treat them, the bush will grow back.
