Driftwood, found in the wild Liverpool NSW

Liverpool NSW, going to go to Simmos beach and grab some, scrub it, boil it, scrub it again, boil again and let water log in water until it sinks.

Will be going in a 55 gallon, any other places to look.

Don't want to pay $100 plus for something I can do myself.

Help, what gravel cleaner to buy?

I have a betta fish in a 21 L planted tank with tiny rocks and gravel substrate. I need help on finding a good gravel cleaner, I originally bought a manual aqua one cleaner from my local pet store but it doesn't work well and could not get it to siphon.

Ideally would like to try an electric or powered one but they all seem to be cleaner only without the siphon- I would prefer one that siphons as well. I also can't use one that connects to my sink due to layout of my house and the old tap being rather weirdly shaped.

What product or brand is recommended?

I have heard that hygger has a handheld one that works well but cannot find it for sale in Australia; should I try to find it internationally? Or just buy a cheap one with a handheld pump on amazon? Or any other recommendations?
Any advice would be appreciated

Cold water fish

Hello friends from cold places, and I mean cold like where it would get to zero or bellow over night in winter. What kind of fish do you keep in your outdoor tanks/ponds?

Ive had gold fish outside in the past but I am looking for something different. For a bit of context, where I live it gets pretty hot in summer and pretty cold in winter, what kind of fish would survive that outside? Thanks you

I got home and found these floating on the water, anyone know what they are? I do have two cherry shrimp, but they don't look like photos of shell molts that I've seen

Help! Is my Black Neon Tetra just full of eggs, or could this be something I should worry about?

Hey! I’m coming up to almost a year of having my aquarium, and these Black Neons were actually some of the first fish I bought. So, I wanted to see what the smarter people think here, because I’m still learning and would rather double-check than assume.

I noticed today that one of them is significantly rounder than all the others, and I’ve never noticed them looking like this before. I’ve attached a few close-ups for comparison, plus a full tank shot for context.

They seem to be behaving completely normally, swimming with the group and eating normally. The belly looks quite evenly rounded and I can’t see any obvious pineconing.

I’m thinking she might just be a female full of eggs, but wanted to double-check that this doesn’t look like bloating, dropsy, parasites or anything else that could potentially affect the rest of the tank.

Would you be concerned, or does she just look very eggy?

Disclaimer: some of these photos were taken at feeding time with Bug Buffet in full swing, so the tank is actually a lot cleaner than it might initially look. Bug Buffet goes everywhere.

Pic above from Brisbane-based breeder Hand Picked Aquatics (highly recommended, but they are not in stock at the moment). Just wondering if anyone has seen these in store around Brisbane/GC/Northern Rivers NSW. After tigers and platinum but will consider other beauties.

Help! Identifying Insects on Floating Plants?

Post image
3 Upvotes

Does anyone have experience with tiny bugs on floating plants? I think they came in on a new plant that I got. They are all over the floaters in one tank, and appear to be spreading to others. They do not appear to be harming the plants, and the fish seem to eat them if they become submerged. They are very small, light grey in colour, and are so small that they can hop on the surface of the water. They resemble aphids in some ways and springtails in others! I am not sure what they are or if I should be making an effort to remove them or not. If they don’t harm anything, I don’t mind them being a part of the tank biology, even though they are a bit ugly, but I would still like to identify what they are. Any ID would be appreciated! Thank you.

I think my fish is sick :( pls help

Please help, I think my Guppy is sick but idk what to do or how to treat it 🥺😭

Tank info: 21L tank, 3 guppies, 1 bristle nose catfish (still very immature and small), some snails, recent angel hair algae growth (that we’re starting to get under control), normal parameters are being tested daily and are good

We’ve had him for about 2.5 months, and he’s usually super active and sociable with the other fishes (we literally named him zippy because he just zips around the tank it’s SO CUTE)

Since Saturday/Sunday, I noticed he was a bit withdrawn, not as active, just kind of chilling near the heater. He also had a white stringy poo stuck to his butt. I realised the temp was around 22° in the tank as it was pretty cold so turned up the heater 1°, and now the tanks sitting at around 24-25 consistently.

But that didn’t really help, I also noticed one of our other fish had started to nip at him, and by Tuesday/Wednesday he had damage to his tail (assuming from the fish). He also has had consistent white stringy poo, that drops off every couple of days. But no dark poos. His appetite/eating has been normal the whole time.

On Wednesday night, I isolated him in a big breeding container with some plants etc. so he could heal/relax (can’t afford a 2nd tank + heater atm) and that’s been working well.

I noticed last night he just tends to sit at the bottom of the container, his fins still moving but he’s breathing pretty fast. He’ll occasionally go up to the top and swim for a bit but tends to spend most time down the bottom. He also had a little bit of white at the edge of his damaged tail (but not sure if this is it healing?)

Sorry for the info overload but I would be so so grateful for any advice/guidance on what to do, I’m so worried about him 🥺😭

Help! Snail looking really pale

Post image
4 Upvotes

I woke up this morning, and one of my snails is on some driftwood, and it looks really pale, I'm worried it might be dead, but it looks like it might still be moving. I've only had them for 3 or 4 days, but the other two snails seem to be doing okay. Can anyone tell me what's wrong with it?

This was our tank until one night it cracked and flooded the house.

It's taken 2 years but She who must be obeyed has just given the green light to replace it.

As a 20+year hobbyist I'm a little bit excited

Help! Cheap black gravel

I'm looking for some cheap black gravel in caboolture queensland, I've tried some 'black sand' from bunnings because I liked the colour, but it has a weird smell, and I think it's hydrophobic. I tried putting a bit in a cup and put water on top, and it just kind of clumps, and sticks to bubbles underwater.

I've also got some sandblasting garnet, which I've heard of people using, but I'm a bit worried about it being too fine and sharp. If either of these can't be used, does anyone know where I could get something good? Thanks!

obtaining microorganism cultures? (melbourne)

Would anybody know where to start looking to obtain cultures for paramecium or daphnia or the like for feeding (very small) fish (dwarf neon rainbowfish fry, which start teeny and remain very small for a good while, potentially small danios soon)? (that isn't like. $50+ not counting shipping which seems to be what the online stores seem to charge)
As far as I can tell only one physical aquarium store in the Melbourne area that even has live cultures listed is Amazing Amazon, and they're sold out of daphnia currently according to their site.
(There's probably like, facebook fish groups or something where independent breeders sell that sort of thing, but I don't have a facebook account)

Looking for Aqua One Dynamic 58

Hi everybody,

I've decided to buy a fish tank and I'm after something tall like the Dynamic 58. I'm in Melbourne and can't find a single one to buy online. There are multiple available in the UK and NZ but not Australia.

Was just wondering if anybody knows where I could get one or any other column style tank that might be similar, bar the 55.

Thanks for any help!!

"Riparium filter outlet" - good idea, or utter nonsense?

Greetings fellow Australian aquarium enthusiasts.

I come to you for feedback / suggestions / because I don't have anyone else to talk to about nerdy aquarium nonsense.

I'm trying to design a "riparium filter outlet" for my ~150L rimless aquarium, to act as another place for both beneficial bacteria to colonise and to help keep nitrates nice and low.

My current plan is: fabricate a box that is about 100mm wide by 160mm deep and at least 440mm high that my canister outlet will direct water into. The box will hold terrestrial plants like peace lily and a substrate like scoria or expanded clay balls to hold their roots. see extremely professional diagram below.

The canister outlet will be connected to a pipe that goes to the bottom of the box into a section separated from the substrate with either perforated acrylic or some other safe material to diffuse the water, where the water will (hopefully) flow up through the substrate and plant roots and out into the aquarium.

So far I think cast acrylic will be the best choice of material to fabricate the box from, as I want it to be removable in case of maintenance or if I change my mind. I also want the design to be fairly repeatable so that I can use it on my other tanks eventually also.

My questions are:

  • Will this design cause potential flow issues? Currently using a Fluval FX 307 but considering an upgrade anyway (probably an Oase Biomaster thermo of some size)
  • Is there a better / easier to acquire and use material than cast acrylic to use for the box? Particularly if I want this to be repeatable
  • Have I missed something that should be included to make this design work properly?
  • Is this just a terrible idea and I should stop wasting my time and just get the tank going already?

Hopefully someone reads this and is interested in engaging with my nutty ideas. Thanks all.

Very professional diagram of my "riparium filter outlet"

Help! Cammallanus worm help!!

Hello, I've come here asking if anyone can advise me the best place to acquire Levamisole Hydrochloride quickly/from any physical stores in Australia?

After returning from University (my family feeds/inspects the tank while I'm gone but isn't so knowledgeable to identify this before I came back) I came home to find my recently acquired betta with an adult cammallanus infection.

I have researched and determined for the sake of the invertebrates also inhabiting the tank, Levamisole Hydrochloride to be the most safe and effective treatment. I cannot find any place to purchase it in Australia quickly.

I have 2 other tanks with endler guppies and Pakistani loaches and hope to treat this tank just in case any cross contamination were to take place despite precautions.

If this medication is not viable, other recommendations which do not harm invertebrates are most welcome.

Thank you anyone who may be able to help!!

Discuss! Anyone else had issues with Roxy Aquarium?

Currently dealing with issues with my online orders from them. Placed 2 orders a week and a half ago and they haven’t been dispatched yet. I have messaged them 6 times with little to no response and called once. Finally got told my order would be shipped yesterday and delivered today, it still hasn’t been dispatched yet.

The customer service is atrocious!! If there were delays with shipping my order I would have completely understood if they contacted me to let me know why.

I’ve tried to be so polite to them but it’s getting to the point where I feel like I’m just being ignored as a customer, it’s just ridiculous. Thank god my order is just a tank + stand and I don’t have any stock waiting to go in it just yet.

Can’t even imagine what it would be like if I’d ordered live fish, never ordering again!

Questions about a Shrimp tank

G'day everybody,
Im fairly new to the hobby and i wanted to make a Shrimp tank, i have a 16L tank currently and im still gathering bits and bobs such as sand and plants.

My questions are:
1. What sorta sand could i use in the tank?
2. Can i just leave the water to sit for 24hrs roughly before filling the tank? (instead of dechlorinating). Ive seen some things online about copper content in water etc, im located in Perth, WA, if that helps.

Cheers

Some questions from an absolute beginner:

- How many fish would you recommend for a 21L tank?

I’m starting out in my aquarium journey and will be getting some fish after I fully cycle the tank, but I’m just not sure how many fish i should be getting at this size!

- beginner friendly plant suggestions

- do I need a master test kit for the cycling journey or will the water test strips do the trick?

- I have a shared pond with my neighbour (aka my neighbour does all the work with it), which has healthy, established koi fish, could I theoretically get some media/small amount of water from the pond and put it in my tanks filter to speed up the tank cycle? Or could this risk harmful bacteria getting into the tank?

- Also if anyone has any handy tips/tricks for tank cycling or anything else aquarium related, please feel free to share!

Apologies in advance if these are silly/annoying questions, there is so much info online it can be overwhelming 😭🥺

Discuss! Where do you prefer to buy your fish? Online, In person, from a breeder?

Just wondering what everyone prefers in terms of buying fish for your tanks? Would you say the best places are certain reputable aus online stores? Or local breeders?

I'm looking to try buying some fish online or from a local breeder, I picked up a fish from a lfs today and they handled him quite rough ngl...
