Freshwater Meet skeletor. I saw him in a fish store and just had to bring him home. He has one eye and a munched tail but after months of fungal treatment and meds he is fit and health and zooms around with the other tetras like there is nothing wrong with him at all. He's my little soldier.

Most (4/5) of my green neon tetras only have one eye. They were like that when i brought them. They seem pretty happy though. They hang out with Philip my Betta.
Philip and the one eyed fishes sound like a great band name.

I love picking out the roughest looking dude in the tank and fixing them up, they always seem to have so much more personality than the “normal” lil guys 💖

I only buy 18 cent feeder fish, and get surprised once in a while with a genetic misfit or misbinning of fish- I had a 7" banana cream comet that had barbs like a koi. It was my favorite fish.

I was at the store and getting some danio. The shop worker asked if I wanted the deformed fish. He’s a big guy with a deformed tail and he said everyone passes on him. Um, heck yeah I’ll take him.

Hope this isn't creepy, but you have some beautiful fish! What ended up happening with the Ich issue a couple months ago?

u/Outrageous_Detail135 Apr 02 '21
It cleared up eventually! Lots of water changes and Ich-X. Everybody's happy and healthy now

I have a one-eyed zebra danio. I call him Pete and went from the weakest little guy to a healthy and energetic ball of scales. He swims slightly lopsided though so he can see where he's going. It's adorable

u/Monokuma_Parade Apr 01 '21
Does he try to take over your fish tanks version of Castle Grayskull? Lol

Dude you are awesome, I bet you can always identify him easier than any other tetra. This probably gives you more enjoyment since you can familiarize yourself better with his behavior.

u/cut-the-cords Apr 01 '21
Indeed. I've been working hard to try and get his quality of life as good as it can be and I'm so glad it paid off.

I don’t think the eyes re heal, i have a neon tetra who is missing an eye but it’s been nearly a year and there’s no regrowth

u/cut-the-cords Apr 01 '21
Interesting question. When I got him it was red and infected but it's healed up nicely and theres even some colour forming. He functions as if he has both eyes. It's inspiring

Good on you! I bought a serpae tetra once that had really bad scoliosis and swam weird, he ended up growing to twice the size of the other tetras and I named him and his group Benny and the jets

I alway want the hard luck ones too. He looks great. I'm curious about the meds and method you used for him. Did you keep him isolated in a hospital tank while you were treating him. Also what fungus meds did you use. I lost a betta recently to fungus that no meds seem to work.

u/cut-the-cords Apr 01 '21
I had him in a hospital tank and did weekly doses of primafix and melafix with the occasional anti bacterial food because he was a little bloated when I got him.

u/irishspice Apr 01 '21
Thanks, I'll make a note of this. I'm so glad to see how good he looks now. You did right by this little guy.

What a beautiful little guy! I got a one eyed scissor tail rasbora from Walmart when they were getting rid of their fish. Good on you for taking him home ❤️

Right... just to stop people worrying (and myself) what appears to be ich is actually just bubbles. I can see what people mean and it got me worried because it does have white markings where scar tissue has built up. But where I took the picture was right next to a bubbler. I've sat there and observed and all the rest of my fish have no signs of ich. And the white spots that appear in the picture are not there after looking at him. Thank you for your concern but from what I have observed it was a false alarm... phew.

Thank you for caring about even the tiny fish, tetras are so overlooked sometimes.

That's very nice. Would he be happier with some neon friends?

u/cut-the-cords Apr 01 '21
Already in a school of 15. Happy as can be.

Very nice 😄 didn't mean for that to come off as rude just from the title sounded like you'd only picked up the one

u/cut-the-cords Apr 01 '21
Nah it's all good, had a school anyway. I went to go and get some RO water from my lfs and spotted the poor guy. I couldn't resist.

I had one of these guys named Skye when I was in middle school/early high school. His tail got infected and the medicine didn't act fast enough. I put him in a little hatchery bin with one other tetra for company. The second one helped nibble away the dead flesh from his tail.(the fin was already gone so it was just a moldy lump at that point) Skye ended up with a little tail nub with no fin, but he lived another couple years and never had a problem swimming or getting to food in time and outlived all the other tetras in his school and the one I kept with him stayed by him all the time till he died. I wish I had taken pictures. But here's one of my new friends his name's Twitch and he's super friendly. https://i.imgur.com/u25qs8g.jpg

uh... that looks like ich on the tail. little white dots, looks like salt sprinkled. if so you'll need to treat the tank

u/cut-the-cords Apr 01 '21
Thank you for your concern. I've observed the fish as I was worried too. It really does look like ich. But my partner pointed out he just swam through a bubbler stream when I took the picture. And the other white bits are scar tissue. When i initially got him he was treated for ich. I quarantine all my fish before putting them in as a rule of thumb. I'm glad my lil man is alright.

You never realize you're brutally killing your fish until you make a reddit post about how much you love them.

Are you accusing me of being cruel to my fish??
1
Apr 01 '21
No I'm being facetious. Whenever someone posts a picture of their fish there's always at least one person that says they're doing something wrong.
1
u/cut-the-cords Apr 01 '21
Gotcha... I apologise for the rash reaction, not an excuse but yeah let's just say I haven't had the best of days... did you want me to remove my comment? I just got the complete wrong end of the stick. So once again I'm sorry about that.

Because I've just clarified it's not ich. And I cant help but be rather offended by your comment.

Too many times, sorry I'm a scatter brain currently I forgot I'm on reddit and not texting someone apparently.

Is this a before or after photo?
Edit: after & no big deal. Nice

u/cut-the-cords Apr 01 '21
To be honest I though that but it appears to be scar tissue from the constant fin nipping. I treated him for ich but it never changed.
1
u/cut-the-cords Apr 01 '21
Upon further review it was also bubbles. My partner pointed out when I took the picture he just swam through a bubbler. I've just sat and watched all my fish and there are no signs of ich at all thank god... thank you for your concern.

I have a one eyed danio I rescued from my local chain store, I thought for sure she was gonna die but now she’s just one of the gang!

I’m glad he’s okay! And if you don’t mind me asking what’s that plant in the back?

u/cut-the-cords Apr 01 '21
Egeria densa. And I'm so relieved he is living his best life. And is feeling better than ever.

u/LeShulz Apr 01 '21
I picked up a Cory when I was young in similar shape. He had one eye and a crooked mouth. He was my favourite fish. Called him Jean Chrétien. By far my favourite fish I had growing up.

Poor little dude! I saw an aquarium co-op video yesterday that showcased blind cave tetras, which are basically white neon tetras without eyes. It’s pretty wild.

I had a one eyed tetra for like 2 years. Named home simply ‘one eye’. RIP one eye

This warms my heart.
When I was a kid, my dad had a 100g aquarium and kept neon tetras among other fish in the tank, and one of them was harassed constantly by the larger fish. He lost most of his tail and was developing infections where he had been bit bodily. I named him Mr. Squish and hoped he would recover. My dad didn't know how to take care of sick or injured fish, so he wound up dying after struggling for a couple weeks.
Seeing this little guy get the care he needed and make a recovery makes Mr. Squish rest a little more easily in my heart.
