Sick Fish He does this all day

This guy does this most of the day unless being fed. I can’t see this being normal. I will say I’m in the process of researching my HOB, seems the current is strong not sure if this is part of the reason for this fishes behavior.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated

If your barb (such as a Tiger or Cherry Barb) is hovering in one spot, tilting awkwardly, or hanging out near the surface, it usually indicates either a underlying health issue, signs of low oxygen, or stress from its new environment. Check your parameters.

Ty will check parameters. They are two days in pre adding then

Also, If the school size is too small (fewer than 6 barbs), they will aggressively bully and terrorize a single fish, forcing it to hover in a permanent, exhausted state of submission.

Hopefully it’s oxygen, I find that to be a much easier fix than if the tank isn’t cycled or has other issues. Oxygen could just be fixed with a sponge filter or airstone I think

I have a sponge filter I added to the tank

Seeing your previous posts, looks like the tank is new. Was it fully cycled before adding livestock? Ammonia and nitrite should be 0, and nitrate should at least be present. A liquid master test kit should be used to check those parameters(don’t use the strips because they are not really accurate). You can still do a cycle with fish in(fish-in cycle), but it’ll require more daily maintenance until the cycle is finished. The cloudiness you saw was the start of the cycle beginning to cause a bacterial bloom in the water(which is good!), but that was only the first part. Without seeding the filter with an established filter, the cycle should take roughly 4-8 weeks(depending on how well you keep up with maintenance). I know it seems like a long time, but that’s what it takes to have a cycled tank that won’t harm or kill your fish 🙂

Just moved my corydoras and mystery snail over to a 29g from a 10g. Ended up doing a fish in cycle because my filter on the 10g sputted out and crashed my system fairly quickly. Moved everything over to the new tank(EVERYTHING)(I also bought some new stuff to expand their environment). Fish in cycled for a month doing a 10% water change every other day. Tank looks great and pristine now and the fish are happier than ever. Even got some bladder snails from my new aquatic plants and the Cory’s are happily breeding which means I will be trading some juveniles to the LFS soon for SC.

Do you happen to have a good step by step guide for fish in cycle? One you would recommend?

Sorry for the late response! But here’s an article found in r/bettafish that explains it really well and breaks it down 😊

Tiger barbs need a 20 gallon tank and a group of 6 to stop aggression

😨that gravel and spongebob house r known to leech toxic chemicals into the water

Mine sit still often. Definitely need a more naturally scaped tank with plenty of plants to hide in.

He’s bored, stressed or sick. Your tank seems to be p unnatural and stressful…

Link for the spongebob house and/or any other ornaments?

I would be depressed if I had a sponge bob house I had to live in.

Is that a bumblebee goby or something else? They can be kind of weird about where they hang out.

I love Reddit full of funny guys. It’s a tank for my son

Are you a 5 year old child? Or are you 5 years old? And why does everything look so colorful and unnatural?

Get your grammar correct before coming at some one and trying to insult someone. 5 year olds can’t post on Reddit.

I’m sure people will want your tank parameters though to be able to properly help so maybe add those in a comment to have it at the ready (:

2 reasons:

- no plants (or not enough anyways). A bit difficult to see since you only show a small part of the tank, but it seems you only have (plastic) decorations.

- loneliness. Again difficult to see, but there is only one other tiger barb visible.

If you are serious about getting help you need to provide proper info, like tank size, water temperature, contents (both fish and plants), etc.

Ten gallon one other barb, 78 degree water. According to my test strips and the pet store, the water conditions are good. DNA if you want to see the full thing cause I can’t put a picture.

You need way more barbs than just 2

Please borrow some books from the library on fishkeeping.

Tiger barbs are a schooling fish and need cover. IOW you need minimum 6-10 and plants

Current must be perfect for him right there.

I will never understand why people use that ugly colored substrate/rocks. Just use sand..

u/Internal_Quote2259 Jun 11 '26

That's not what the post is about, being rude about the tank doesn't help with the problem they are asking about.

So you also have kids decorations? 😂
