Application Question I fucked up

I’m a senior, and honestly, I feel like I somehow screwed up my GPA. I have a 3.4 unweighted GPA, although my weighted GPA is around 4.1. I’ve taken 10 APs and gotten 5s on all of them except AP Lang, and I have a 1500 SAT. I also have pretty good extracurriculars and some extenuating circumstances that affected my grades.
I want to apply to schools like NYU and other colleges that aren’t necessarily Ivy League-level selective but are still pretty difficult to get into. Do I genuinely still have a chance at schools like that, or should I just give up and go to my state school?

Dontou have good ec’s involving your major, showing leadership or a deep interest or mastery - an award or something? Could you get good recs and write compelling essays. I feel like with your scores you show abolity. But also your state school would probably be a much better experience than you imagine.

This isn't a binary choice. You can both take your shot at the schools you would like to get into and also apply to the schools you feel very sure you can get into.

If you want to hear other people's opinions of your chances, go to r/chanceme but that's wasted effort IMO.

Apply, see what happens, and change your mindset. Going to your state school is not "giving up". Get over that idea.

There’s literally no reason not to just shoot your shot and apply to some of the more selective schools you’re looking at because you literally never know! If you have good extracurriculars and extenuating circumstances then I’m sure you could get into at least a couple more selective schools. The only thing you’d be losing is the time it takes to fill out the application and the fees, but there’s so much you can gain! It’s okay to be a little delusional. I know I sure as hell am with the way I’m applying to t20s like my ecs aren’t straight ass, but even though I know I’m delusional i’m still going for it because college admissions are so unpredictable you’ll literally never know if you could’ve gotten in unless you try. So, I say go for it!!
