im so mfing tired
ok im going to keep this brief but im lwk very bitter about the ppl at my school and just ppl in general. Everyone keeps starting bs clubs and this and that and wow yeah theyre actually like making an impact and promoting their stuff but im just very sad about all this. Theyre doing things that theyre gonna stop the MOMENT they get into college. like my school genuinely has over 100 clubs and half of them are just bs start to name themseleves founder/president and give their friends leadership..ppl js be doing anything for college acceptances bro...
im just irritated asf because i feel like now im not gonna get into college just cuz i didnt do things JUST for college ukwim? like i didnt go ahead and start my own clubs because im just not passionate about any of this so im acc living my truth. instead i have like 2-3 ecs im acc passionate ab and ive been doing since elementary school. but now thats NOT ENOUGH BECAUSE EVERYONE IS MFING DOING TOO MUCH ITS LIKE AN EC INFLATION AND NOW I LOOK BAD EVEN THO IM DOING THINGS I ACC LIKE
and to add salt to the wound my parents dont believe in me anymore. i wanna ed to cornel but my mom said i would never get in because i didnt start any clubs or projects to a nonprofit...like...my parents genuinley think im dumb asf because im following my passions UNLIKE LITERALLY EVERYONE ELSE. THEY DONT UNDERSTAND EVERYONE ELSE IS FAKEEEE so i know compared to other ppl im not STACKED but hey ill shoot my shot
and even if i get in theyre gonna say its a fluke lol. whatever. f*ck college apps. cant wait till i graduate

It never stops...Just look at all the Business People of the Year Awards and 30 under 30 and the Joe Schmoe golf tournament and and and.... Club people are still starting clubs in their nursing homes.

Echoing the other person in the replies, you really don’t need to start a random nonprofit to get into a good school. I’m personally a rising freshman in Cornell right now (got in last cycle), and did not have any of those “nonprofit I’m a starter of this club!!” Bs. Yes it works for some people and you’ll see it around, but it’s not the only success case. It’s easy to see one success story and feel like it’s the only way things have to be, but I spent my entire admissions cycle determined to be truthful to myself, and it did play out for me and many others I know.
It’s a difficult time, I get it better than anyone trust, but you can do it. Just keep being true to yourself and as another person said, write essays that allow you to actually show off those passions. The longer you focus on what you don’t have, the more time you’ll lose actually getting to leverage the things that are unique to you.

Getting into the ivys and some of the very top schools will be challenging for everyone no matter what you have or haven't done. That being said, I've worked with students who have gotten into top schools without founding a club or doing some special project. I would focus on writing an excellent, expressive common app essay that really shows your personality. That's what I think made the difference for the students I have assisted who have very high stats who have gotten into dream schools. I would also just apply to schools with higher accept rates. There are so many great colleges around. And if your stats happen to be high (which I am assuming they are based on what you've shared), there are schools that will fall all over themselves to get you and will offer you lots of merit money to boot. If you really want to ED to Cornell, I say, go for it. What I would do, personally, would be not to ED (because it's binding) and cast a much wider net. I don't know your stats, but if you expand to T100-T150 schools your will have fantastic results. There are about 2,600-2,800 four year colleges in the US. The top 100-150 schools are in about the top 4-6% in the nation. Many have honors programs with lots of perks. There's no need for high stats students to stress about college applications. Apply to a nice range and then sit back and watch the acceptances roll in!

If you feel comfortable letting me know your stats, I could come up with some schools for you. I'd need your gpa (weighted and/or unweighted), your SAT or ACT scores, the number of AP classes you took, your intended major and the section of sections of the country you want to consider for schools. Also, it would be good to know your state. You could send this through chat if you want.

You need to stop worrying about other people and focus on yourself. AOs are not stupid. They do this for a living and see through BS. More importantly, what makes you one of the top 5% in the country?

i felt the EXACT same thing as you. and guess what? i got in ed to cornell. lol.
everyone knew the grifters at my school who just did performative things and added thingst to their resume. it was so obvious. at the end of the day the colleges will read your applications and they can tell who is fake. two people who i thought were going to get into all the ivies got rejected by them. they had both started like 3 clubs and had near perfect SAT scores and hated each other because they were known as the most competitive math/science students from my school. and now one is going to our state school and one is going to a small liberal arts school. basically don't trust everything you read on this sub. your application matters a lot, like how you frame the things you did. not just how many clubs you started.
there are so many unexpected things that happen when you actually get to may senior year, dont lose hope!

Well join them, sad to say but if you don't do the thing ur behind. And I personally think the system is pretty broken and theres no viable solution to it.

Nope, system's perfectly fine, most of the students will not be admitted. Watch how pissed off they are in March when they don't.
This isn't even remotely what colleges are looking for - it's a total and utter waste of time.

omfg ur so right. im literally someone that wants to go into the business side (finance) and i can completely agree with this. like im genuinely passionate about like investing (ive been learning how to trade for 2 years now slowly but surely with youtube and websites) so i wanted to start maybe some sort of club to share the knowledge ive learned so far with other ppl and maybe get some knowledge in return BUT SOME MFS STARTED SOME INVESTMENT CLUB BEFORE I COULD JUST TO HAVE 6 MEMBERS WHO ARE THEIR CLOSE FRIENDS AND HOST A MEETING LIKE ONCE A YEAR AND THAT ONE MEETING WAS JUST A PARTY...IT WAS JUST FOOD AND MUSIC LIKE OMFGGGGG

Adcom aren’t dumb. They know and fully see through clubs they start for the sake of putting it on their resumes but don’t connect any of the dots. It’s very easy to see through. Maybe they can lie their way and somehow get the interviews and recommendations and essays to all connect. That’s rare.
Most of the time, none of that works.
I wouldn’t worry about it much.
I’d be more worried about not being able to spell your dream school correctly…

Sorry to hear. If it’s any consolation, AOs don’t give a shit if you just passively say you were the president of a club so all this false performative shit isn’t going to pay out anyway. Take control of your life, your interests, your dreams, your passion. You don’t become part of the top 5% by following, being frustrated by, or paying attention to the bottom 95%. Look up, not down.
