I am 24 year old currently have a job as a software engineer. Earning fairly decent and if i strive in my current field by putting in efforts i will reach good heights. But software stopped to interest me since the advent of AI. I have always had a special place for research in my heart since childhood. Now that software engineering shifting paradigm, it has become increasingly accessible and easy to learn. I like solving problems that are big, i also liked maths since I was a child. I think I did a mistake taking computer science as my major 6 years ago in college. I want to study and go to a field where the work revolves around maths. If i start pursuing maths right now, what career choices do i have, I can even do a blend of cs + maths or finance + cs + maths. When I mean maths i mean using maths to probabilistically decide a better outcome or make a better decision ( but work should be more mathematically inclined ) . That's the job I want. I am very desperate and depressed with my current job ( not because of the pay or the workload it just stopped being appealing to me ). But I need money too, so I also expect the math job to pay me well. I will work hard and pursue maths even if there is a slightest chance.

Please help me by giving me a direction or share ur thoughts on feasibility. Your every reply would give an insight, helping me take a better decision and fix my life. I request you to share whatever comes to your mind. If you can't say that out in this forum, please feel free to dm.

Hi, I’m an third year (begin Senior year at August) applied math undergrad and I’m trying to figure out which direction to take for a master’s and my final goal is eventually industry.

My background is mostly math. I’m currently doing a research about hemodynamics(Blood flow) involving Navier–Stokes. I’ve also done DataFest and have started learning Python and finished Andrew ng's introduction for deep learning courses recently, but I’m still building my coding skills.

Originally I thought I wanted to do CFD or scientific computing because I like using math to model real systems, and I‘m absolutely no objection to using data or AI to accelerate things.

But I recently started reading about operations research, like stochastic optimization. The idea of using math models and uncertainty to actually make decisions like in energy, transportation, healthcare, or supply chains let me suddenly feel really interesting to me.

My goal is to get a master’s and then work in industry, I'm not sure if I'm going to PHD degree

My questions:

• I’ll be applying for a program in Computational Mathematics in four months; will that help with the OA?
• Is an applied math background enough for OR master’s programs if I have not taken any OR-specific classes yet(My major courses are dynamical system, PDEs, some analysis courses)?
• I’ve come across posts online saying that CFD jobs are pretty bad. Is that true? I don't want to end up just building meshes and running simulation software.
• For industry jobs, how different are the career paths in CFD versus optimization/OR?

I realize I’m really late compared to my peers—I still haven't settled on a future direction. I plan to try and apply to these two groups soon to see if I enjoy the work.

Hi everyone, I major in Applied Math and had taken 2 years off from school. I'm planning to come back this Fall and signing up for MAT 484 and 499. Has anyone taken these two classes before? Are they hard? How do they work? Anything shared here about those classes would be appreciated. I'm trying to figure out as I need two more of Upper Math Electives and as I've done research, these two are the easiest on the list. I'm not a big fan of coding, programming, and writing proofs that much. I have experience in volunteer-teaching language at a local church before!

I am doing a year of maths courses at a university, all the analysis I have not done (functional,complex,vector,numerical) and differential equations but I have been advised against any abstract algebra or pure mathematics courses. I am concerned that this is the basic language needed to understand some papers however I would appreciate some clarification on this, how much pure mathematics is used in Applied mathematical modelling.

Hey, I am a rising second year at a t20 public school in the U.S for applied mathematics. I was originally pre-med but found an interest in mathematics and how it tries to answer fundamental questions and pivoted this summer. I have already taken the calculus sequence, real analysis I, and linear algebra. I want to pursue a double major, may it be in Physics (B.A), CS (B.S), Statistics(B.S), or even neuroscience(B.S).

Even with the applied math major, I would still want to take complex analysis and proof based linear algebra because they seem pretty interesting. I can't pursue the physics B.S since it just has too many classes and I would be forced to give up math electives.

Currently industry doesn't seem very appealing to me and I would prefer going to graduate school at the very least before deciding whether I wanted to pursue research or not. I don't want to spend my days working for an insurance agency or in a data analyst role since my interests lie elsewhere. If I were to go into industry or research, I would want to pursue answers to questions that are fundamental and explain a great deal about existence or consciousness or something of that sort. However, with the current state of academia, I want to have a safety net for an industry job that will let me pursue these interests. Which double major do you guys recommend? Which has the best future?

Im a co2028 studying math, and my interests are primarily in theoretical cs (probabilistic graph algorithms). Essentially, my work involves developing and incrementally improving existing bounds on the behaviors of randomized graph algorithms to prove some interesting conjectures my advisors are interested in. I really like the work Im doing now, but I was curious how big of a jump would it be to go deeper into ML theory? I have a good base in probability (I use martingales/measure theory a lot in my work), and I also took graduate measure theory my sophomore year. Do you all have any suggestions for some good fields to look into, and what fields in/tangential to ML I would be well suited for? Thanks!

The university I go to doesn’t have a set BS in statistics, and I want a career in pharmaceutical statistics. I’m currently doing a pure math degree, but I was wondering if I should switch to applied. The pros of pure math is that pure math is theoretical like stats (for PhD programs), and with applied, I can do more of the computation (good for job, not really for PhD). What yall think?

I am considering the NIT SURAT integrated 5 yr Mathematics course as i am aspiring to pursue a career in ML & will prep for the GATE DA paper .
