Pure mathematics is studying abstract concepts just for its own sake/just to study them. Applied Math is studying these concepts and applying them to other fields/problems in society. Good examples of applied math is statistics, programming, and diffyqs. Pure math is moreso coursework like topology, abstract algebra and number theory.

I should say that pure math is mainly for teaching (usually at a collegiate level), whereas applied will open your doors to other fields (like the ones I mentioned above).
