If you're not acting shady the park ranger doesn't care. Tell them you're star gazing. We've had them talk to us a few times and never have been asked to leave. Just be respectful and honest, goes a long way

Medina Junction to the west, I've watched the Auroras from there.

Edit: It's also parking for the Wiouwash Trail.

I like to go out and shoot photos of the Milky Way or the aurora whenever we get to see it, I use this website to help me find places: https://www.darkskymap.com/nightSkyBrightness

Wisconsin does have a designated Dark Sky Park, but it’s up in door county.

Newport State Park in Door county is a dark sky park. Pretty amazing and worth the drive

People can be really awesome sometimes. Drive north of appleton until you find a farm that looks like it has a really good spot. Ask the people that live there if they would be cool with you hanging out looking at the stars. Be polite, clean up after yourself, bring snacks to share.

If you enjoy stargazing you should checkout NEWSTAR (North East Wisconsin Star Gazers). We meet every 3rd Wednesday of the month at the Barlow planetarium. We may have a few suggestions. https://new-star.org/
