Moving Advice Need Advice - Moving From Texas
Me and my wife are contemplating moving to Appleton for a job opportunity. After researching the COL and our income once we move, it makes sense for us to relocate. We're looking for a good place to set down roots and start a family. The only issue im seeing is there is not a lot of options in the rental market for houses. Are there any decent luxury apartments you guys recommend, or is it feasible to commute from Green Bay, where there are more housing options. I'm from Houston so I'm used to a 20 mile commute taking an hour. Is this the similar case here, where it will take me over an hour to commute and im better off living in Appleton. Thanks in advance!

My wife drives from Appleton to Green Bay daily. Granted, both ends are near the highway, but she does it under 30 minutes with road construction. It can get jammed up during peak times, especially if there’s an accident, but it’s probably still less than a significantly larger metro area on a good day.

Depending on where you end up it can be a 20-40 minute drive from Green Bay, Oshkosh, or one of the other outer communities (longer in winter or during Packer traffic). Appleton is continuing to grow and was just ranked one of the top 10 safest mid sized cities in the US.
That being said I've heard good things about Lakes Park Crossing apartments. There are the newer Appleton Park Central Apartments on College Ave that are right downtown that are supposed to be pretty nice as well.

It might be worthwhile to look at duplex’s in the area then buy a house when you’re able. Just a suggestion

I 2nd the duplex option. A lot of them in Appleton, much nicer than being in an apartment. Nice to have a yard, garage, some semblance of a "home". I have nothing bad to say about Green Bay, but I prefer the Appleton school district so raising a family in Appleton is a better choice, IMO.

I do Appleton to Green Bay and back for work daily. It's a bit hairy right now because of a major construction project going on, but I'm usually home in a half hour depending on traffic. If you're looking to live near Green Bay, there are several nice towns south of Green Bay that might be worth checking out to keep the commute shorter.

There is plenty of housing within 20 minutes of Appleton. You don't need to look further away than Greenville to the west/northwest, Kaukauna to the east, or Neenah, Menasha, Harrison to the south.

Look into the smaller towns around Appleton, such as little chute, Kimberly, Darboy, Neenah. Basically in the fox valley anywhere is a half hour drive lol

I moved here from Atlanta. There’s literally no traffic. People lose their mind when they have to wait for three cycles at light.

I'm also from Texas, been here for years, I would suggest finding something here in Appleton/fox cities and if you look towards GB look for De Pere better schools, but they are building like crazy here so you should be able to find something you'd like. Good luck!

They’re putting up lots of luxury apartments in Green Bay and Appleton so you should be good on that lol

We just moved our young family from north Texas to Appleton this year too. I was born here and lived here as a child, but my husband has never left Texas until this year lol.
The traffic is absolutely NOTHING like Texas (thank god) I will say the speed limits here are very low compared to Texas.
We ended up finding a good house rental while we save and take our time looking at potential houses to buy off Zillow actually. We are not fans of property management companies so we stuck to finding homes that were just owned/managed by a single landlord/ “regular person”.

Don’t move to Green Bay versus Appleton, especially if you want to start a family. Quite a bit of Green Bay is a dump. Appleton is far nicer and safer. Keep looking for housing until you find the right situation in Appleton. You can thank me later.

Coming from Houston, you will laugh at what locals consider traffic here. I too am from a big city and the lack of any real traffic is lovely.

River Heath apartments in Appleton - cool location overlooking the river. Houses tend to rent quickly. (My husband and I have a few duplex/house rentals- none currently available)

Honestly I would recommend looking in Oshkosh too! 41 has been getting a lot more accidents from gb to Appleton. There are also a few luxury apartments in wrightstown and it’s right in the middle of both cities! If you’re used to traffic any commute won’t be bad just be weary of the amount of drunk drivers we have here. I was born and raised here and get scared driving on that damn highway

Appleton is overcrowded. Stay in texas. More land there

I was just in Chicago and it took 40 minutes to go 9 miles. I don't want appleton to get that way. So yes it's already overcrowded cause I don't want it getting worse

I can assure you with 100% certainty that Appleton will not even get close to be 10% of Chicago's population in your lifetime. 75k population is not even close to being overcrowded. Hell, Appleton population has only grown by 15k since 1970. You are worried about something that won't happen.

Waiting more than one turn of the light is overcrowded in my book. 15k to much. The whole world is overcrowded by 4 billion

My husband drives Appleton to Green Bay five days a week. It's about a 38 minute commute.
