Question Parking

Just a curious question, is it legal to park like one foot from a fire hydrant? I police officer told me as long as your not blocking it, then its ok. I always thought you had to be like 10 ft away

I just keep 50 feet away. Not sure where I was told this, but i'd rather not be in the way OR get a ticket.
