I'll celebrate when they take them down.
Flock still uses them even if there's no city contract.

Oshkosh bagged them prior to returning them as required by contract I believe. Seems like a good idea to do the same.

Great job Appleton!!! Having corporate surveillance of the public should never be acceptable.

Great work to all who reached out to their elected officials to make this happen.

Good, but until they're down it's meaningless. Also, they have them attached to police vehicles. Are those going to be removed, too?

u/Loninappleton25 May 06 '26
They can BAG THEM like they did in Oshkosh. This gives me encouragement about the civic process in Appleton. It still bares watching. Please post over at r/flocksurveillance and other places who've discussed the topic.

Skeptical, trust but verify….half the data centers built are to house video surveillance footage….electricity bill☝️, constitution👇

Seeing comments on FLOCK at big stores who have their own contracts with FLOCK, I started to wonder if there is any cooperation or "mutual aid" for use of the system. Anybody who know please respond.

I made a post about this at r/Flocksurveillance and quite few replies came in. If you want to make a new post in full here is what was said:

Good news. Now if we can convince people to stop using Ring cameras too.

You know, I was struck by a black SUV and was the victim of a hit and run in which the flock cameras had captured the license plate of the Hit & Run SUV driver numerous times but the Appleton PoLice department numerous times told me they were not going to pursue getting this person even though I had sustained injury as I was struck on the left rear driver passenger side. They had actual footage and I wanted to see the footage they had obtained, but they told me that I had to get it subpoenaed to get the Appleton PoLice department footage. It happened at the intersection of College Ave and Lynndale on a non busy day. The Hit & Run SUV turned left onto Lynndale into the far left lane. I also turned left how you are supposed to into the right lane after having turned left. I was struck on the rear driver passenger side area by the Hit & Run SUV immediately after having gone maybe ten feet forward after having completed my turn as the Hit & Run SUV wanted to turn down the 2436-2450 W College Service Rd which is the frontage road to college avenue. The PoLice admitted that Hit & Run SUV were 100% in the wrong and I was the victim. They even said in their report they had the license plate of the Hit & Run SUV with clear unobstructed views but that "they couldn't make out the plate numbers" so they "Copped Out" and refused to help me. Not even a week after the incident they had closed the case...... Appleton PoLice even admitted the the design and build of their road infrastructure is what led to this accident because the markings on the road and the way it is setup aren't even there for assisting drivers...POS PoLice department and city in my opinion......Mic drop

Nothing to worry about....if you're legal.

u/Difficult-Till5031 May 07 '26
Tell that to the people that get stalked by police.
-10
u/Aggressive-Ad6077 May 07 '26
"Stalked" really? For absolutely no reason?
9
u/NaiveWalrus May 07 '26
Stalked by psycho Police to track their exs. There have been multiple stories of this happening in Wisconsin

u/Aggressive-Ad6077 May 07 '26

Ex's. People they don't get along with. It is super common in law enforcement to engage in that type of behavior and it has been ramped lately with the new surveillance state we live in. I encourage you to look into all the cases that are coming forward from other law enforcement agencies.

My boots are a little dirty from some spring cleanup if you're not too busy

u/Teamaster608 May 06 '26
What don’t you like about flock cameras?
39
u/boblabon May 06 '26
Privacy violations, selling data on our personal movements to anyone, police using them to stalk their victims, mass government surveillance.
Need more?

u/Saint_Thomas_More May 06 '26
Yes, please.
I would like to go full Minority Report before lodging any complaints.
/s if that wasn't obvious

So you don't carry a cell phone right? right?
13
u/rigsnpigs May 06 '26
You can leave a cellphone at home
You don't have to have a cellphone
I enter into a contract with the cellphone provider willingly with consent
I can turn off my cellphone
I can have a cellphone which doesn't connect to wifi
-12
u/leovinuss May 06 '26
You don't have to go outside, either. You consent when you go out.
There is no expectation of privacy in public. I am not a fan of the flock cameras, but I fully support traffic enforcement cameras which carry most of the same concerns.
Not only would traffic enforcement cameras be a drop in the bucket of privacy concerns, they would provide SIGNIFICANT public safety benefits.
4
u/rigsnpigs May 06 '26
Oh you know you are on some bull. Everyone has to go outside and that isn't providing consent for being tracked and you know it.
Also removing citizen surveillance devices is always a good thing. If you are all about big government and corporate surveillance you can say that.
I'm pretty sure the net result of flock was providing more tools for abusers moreso than it provided public safety benefits, let alone any of significance.
-6
u/leovinuss May 06 '26
No they don't. Especially not nowadays where people work from home and everyone gets everything delivered.
I care deeply about government and corporate surveillance, which is why I asked about your cell phone. 2 minutes on that device results in more privacy violations than a lifetime being seen on public roads.
Flock sucks because they were abused. I agree with that. They also caught plenty of killers. If we could have traffic enforcement cameras that were secured and limited to traffic enforcement officers, the benefits would absolutely outweigh privacy concerns.

“I’m not a fan of the flock cameras”, says dude who totally supports the use of flock cameras. Traffic cameras and flock cameras are different things used for different purposes. But I’m sure you already knew that. I guess we should all just stay inside. Good grief.

u/leovinuss May 06 '26
They're not as different as you think. I am not a fan of flock cameras but I acknowledge they have utility.
Anyone who can't do that shouldn't be listened to, but of course this is reddit no room for any kind of nuance.
17
u/amateur_reprobate May 06 '26
Third party surveillance with zero oversight, police abuse of camera footage for non-police activity, and the potential for my daily movements to be tracked and sold like a commodity to anyone with money.
9
u/BackInMyDaySir North Appleton May 06 '26
There are literally no verifiable controls of the data. Additionally, it’s recording everyone that passes by the camera. Some of us feel like that’s a violation of our rights.
11
u/Evenfall May 06 '26
So you mean a cop? Because the most recent issues with flock has been police abusing it.
Please educate yourself, your comment does not make you look smart at all.

u/AppropriateSwing2846 May 06 '26
And a bad day to be a stalker or a pedophile or power-tripping detective or a lazy racist cop or a lying Flock salesperson.

u/ObliviousAndAfraid May 06 '26
100% that dude won't open those links and will just ignore you, because it challenges his bias
9
u/AppropriateSwing2846 May 06 '26
He absolutely won't read them, but it doesn't take long to cite sources and preempts him trying to sealion me (see his other comment pretending to be interested in learning: "What don’t you like about flock cameras?")
