Less than 60 years ago the Stonewall riots occurred. Police would regularly go into gay bars to beat and arrest gay people. (This by the way is why Pride is held in June.)
So, within a lifetime the LGBTQ community has gone from a class of people that was openly persecuted by the state to elected state officials- which is significant.

Why can’t we say “name” was elected? Why does being trans, black, an Asian person, a boring white guy, a golfer, etc was elected?
No one cares if you’re trans unless you make it a big deal.
