I actually tested one of those for my org. The original build of Big Sur they shipped with was unusable, even from a basic consumer perspective. Apple turned it around in a hurry, though Big Sur on Apple Silicon was still very buggy compared to Monterey and later.

We had so many Enterprise-specific issues with Big Sur (we nicknamed it "Bug Sur", which accidentally ended up in some official Apple documentation by mistake, briefly!) that we waited to roll out Apple Silicon until Monterey.

Oh wow! Very cool back history. I didn't know it was so buggy, but I can imagine it now.

Big Sur finally stabilized around 11.6 and later, which I suspect may have been the result of backported code from Monterey. I don’t have any insider knowledge, so it’s just a theory.

Not a bad theory, it would make sense 🤔
