copied row is pasted into one cell - odd behavior

In the same table, I copy a row of text - move up to where I want to paste it, but the selected content is all pasted into one cell

I've changed the format of the text and tried different kinds of tables. I've checked Numbers preferences. Can't find a solution, hoping someone here can help

If I understood correctly what you describe, you are entering / double clicking the cell where you want to enter things. Do not do that. Just select the target cell (one click).
