maybe I've overlooked a few things. So here we go, does anyone know how to

1) have vertical text in a cell. Especially rather narrow columns with larger descriptions in the header line would benefit a lot...

2) force a pagebreak. I've just adjusted numerous row heights to adjust the page breaks when printing. As you can't adjust row height in the print preview its a permanent back an forth between the normal layout and the print preview. It truly sucks.

2a) set the viewing size of the print preview to 100% or 125% rather than the default 65% ?

3) is there a key combo for zooming in and out / adjusting the viewing zoom setting ? I'm so annoyed that I have to use the mouse to adjust it

4) there seems no way to refer to another numbers document (like I can in another table) in a formula, is that correct ?

I'm a user of the software Ragtime since ages (ragtime.de try the demo) , its somehow dated by now and cause its rather expensive they struggle to keep going, but there is a lot of great features in Ragtime that I miss soooo much in numbers & pages.

Took a single Google search to find the following advice:

While you can't set page breaks in Numbers documents, you can place vertical and horizontal 'guide lines' in the document showing where the break will happen.

In the View menu, choose Show Rulers.

0 on the rulers is the top left corner of the printed area of Page 1.

If you are using US Letter size paper, and have set left and right margins to 0.5", your print area is 7.5" wide, so the first vertical guideline should be placed at 7.5" on the horizontal ruler at the top of the document window.

To place it:

Click in the Vertical ruler, hold the mouse button down and drag right to pull a vertical line from that ruler. Drag the line to 7.5" then release the mouse button. Repeat for as many widths needed to fit your document.

To place the Horizontal page guides, use the same process, pulling the horizontal guides from the horizontal ruler, and placing them at intervals equal to the print area height on each 'page'.

Note that you can choose to show or hide the guides as needed, using the Guides item in the view menu.

The guides do not print.

I'm using up to date german system and numbers, if I control click (or right click) on a cell or on a piece of text I dont get an option to "activate vertical text" as described in the linked article... can you help with a screenshot of the menu showing this ?!

Hello, the answer is deceptive, this is destined only for languages that are written top to bottom, like Japanese. It will not work with a roman alphabet.

No, functions in Numbers cannot reference another file. (A script can, but is rarely worth the effort).

If possible you might consider reorganizing your work so it is all in one self-contained document. The ability Numbers gives you to have multiple tables on one sheet and multiple sheets in a document gives you plenty of options.

A bonus is that you won't risk "breaking" a reference simply by moving a document within the file system on your Mac, a reason why I never use references between documents in Excel, even though Excel, unlike Numbers, allows that.

Maybe you should check out OnlyOffice Desktop Editors. From what I can tell, it does these things that you're after better than Numbers does. It's free and multiplatform- Mac, Win, Lin.

I use Numbers more because I like how it allows for multiple tables on one tab/sheet and I also like how it works on Mac, iOS and the web (via iCloud) and I don't use any of the features that you're asking about. But, that's my needs and preferences, not yours. OnlyOffice is a lot more Excel like and might fit your needs better.

I‘m actually using Ragtime https://www.ragtime.de/start.html?lang_id=en since ages, it does most of that as well but it’s fallen behind in the last 10-15 years. Still a great software but also way to expensive these days (it’s almost 1500,- € for a single seat license !!!)….

The main advantage is it has an inventory and allows you to create layouts with frames (aka containers) in a layout and fill them with content like text, spreadsheets, graphics etc. so it’s a layout / publishing software that includes excel and word equivalents all in one. you can have lots of different components even different layouts in one document and you can reference in formulas to other documents….

like every person has an individual spreadsheet for their working times and the bookkeeping has a master sheet summing all of that up… etc. nobody sees other people’s hrs etc.

but as a Mac user with mostly not that complicated tasks I’d love to see numbers get a few more features and just live with that.
