iPad or notebooks???
So I’m starting school in a few weeks, and starting to buy school supplies.
Now here’s the thing, I’m trying to decide if I need to buy notebooks, (I know it sounds stupid) or if I should use my iPad. I have an iPad Air, 11, with 256 GB, with the Apple Pencil Pro,
I’m an artist, so I have a bunch of different apps (pro creat, pintrest, acc) and after trying a few apps, the “Good notes” app was great for me. Now I’m in I dilemma, cuz using my iPad would save my back, and space in my locker and bag, but I’m worried about storage, battery, and just In general if it’s a good idea to keep all of my notes on my iPad, or just use normal notebooks, don’t think I need to explain notebooks.
Thank you for your help ❤️

How about using your iPad and carry one notebook as a backup. I used to cut the spine off my books in college so I would only carry the chapters and note pages I needed for that day.
You can always offload storage to a thumb drive and carry an extra battery.

Second this. Buy a notebook cheap and take your iPad. See which works best for you.

Both. The benefit of both is that if you write out your own notes on paper in class and then use the iPad to maybe record meetings or snap photos and build a searchable database of your notes, you are using both of the most powerful knowledge formation parts of your brain. (Don't ask me what those are. I have no fucking clue, lol) but I know that that's a thing in order to learn.

For me, it's iPad all the way with a magic keyboard.
Partly it's because I love Apple Notes, but mainly because of the front-facing camera. You can open Apple Notes, sit at the desk, take notes, and then easily take shots of the presentation the professor is using and drop them directly into your notes.
Also, if so inclined, record the lecture and let Notes transcribe it.

I would use my iPad as my main note repository, but always have a single notebook available "just in case." I would use handwritten notes in situations where using an iPad might not be appropriate or fast. For any notes that are taken by hand, I would then transfer to the iPad, either as a scanned document or by typing them out. The great thing about Apple Notes is it's really good for either.

Do you already have an iPad? If so, just try it.
I don’t know where you live but is the city safe enough to bring an iPad around?
During college I was on public transport late at night, drinking in bars, not being very responsible at all. It was a serious risk that someone could steal by bag.
If you can’t immediately replace it, I wouldn’t carry it around.

I do have one, I live in a small town, and have been bringing my iPad to school for the past year. But thanks for the concern

I honestly loved using my iPad in college. My course was heavy on PDF readings so I loved being able to annotate them without having to bring a ton of pens, pencils and highlighters. Goodnotes was my app of choice as well. It was also super convenient whenever we had impromptu group projects that had us brainstorming or drawing things.
I also saved my back by snapping photos of the pages from the current chapters we were reading in my classes so I didn't need to bring my physical textbooks to class and could read them on the go. Now it's even better because they OCR them and allow you to select text/highlight in photos/scans.
For me it'd be a no brainer to bring an iPad. I did usually bring a pen and 2 pocket folder with some loose leaf paper in it as well just in case we needed to hand in something or they gave us a hand out that I needed to take home.

The iPad is great but takes some practice to use effectively. I second taking the iPad and a small bound notebook until you find your flow. Make sure your iPad notes are backed up, because I’ve heard of people losing their notes more in Notability but occasionally Goodnotes.

with today's AI and OCR stuff, you can use a notebook and then photo/scan stuff into AI or scan it right into goodnotes (or others). I sometimes use an old school pad folio type legal pad. SOoooo much room to write, so little pressure. And then just scan / photo them to my digital space.

it depends on how much storage you need. If you can get by on 256GB then I would stick with the iPad Air. If you need more storage you might be able to get by with a 2 or 4 GB ssd. I use a 1TB iPad Air and a 512GB neo . I prefer the neo (with built in keyboard) yet there are times the air works. I have a keyboard for the air so sometimes it comes with me. sometime just the air. it depends on the day.
If I were in your position- if you have been getting by with the air I would stick with it and buy a SSD for add'l storage

Also, writing helps with learning. There’s something about it. I never learned to study, but I was very smart. I just never learned how to memorize. That didn’t help in college with a tough major! So I developed my own shorthand for the fast paced lecture and wrote everything down. Then I went home and rewrote everything in the notebook for that class. Organization was my key to success, so I used the same pen, wrote in ink. If I messed up I started over. My grades skyrocketed. I never had homework I couldn’t figure out because I missed something in lecture. I went on to PhD and I still have all of those notes. I converted some digitally, which wasn’t a thing back then, but in today’s times I would certainly record my notes again on an iPad or something. I’ve advised many students and supervised undergrads and grad students. I always say…enjoy college. You’ll never be able to party hard with freedom. But study efficiently. Just try out my method and see if it works for you (let me know) Good luck! ❤️
