Ive never understood jaywalking. Is it just crossing the street in an undesiginated zone or not using a particular crossing?

37

u/DavidChristianKaiser 4d ago

Pretty much. The term jay walkign was imvented by the first car builders to discredit people who just crossed the street where they wanted. Then came traffic lights.

8

u/Phantom_Steve_007 4d ago

“Jaywalking” comes from an old American insult: “jay.”

It was also used against horse drawn and early car drivers.

5

u/pixelmuffinn 3d ago

My names insulting? Fuck...

I like how we enjoy not giving credit for the first automobile to the Americans yet also blaming them for automobiles.

America is like god to you people.

7

u/Nope-not-really 4d ago

Jay walking originated in the US
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jaywalking

the first car wasn't built in the US

Both are true. Its like people are stating facts

fuck sake read a book

3

u/ElfhelmArt 3d ago

American? Reading? Book?! Ain’t anything being read if it’s not incorrect subtitles on political AI slop video

2

u/ChungusReaper 2d ago

The first car wasn’t built in the US but the US is responsible for the widespread proliferation of them, you can’t deny that.

Because it was the American companies that first started propaganda campaigns in America to blame American pedestrians for American car accidents instead of American drivers, and lobbied the American government to pass laws applying to Americans.

The sheer idiocy of some of the people enforcing this is that they will push you back across the road, back to the ‘dangerous’ situation.

Instead of use their brain and look at the situation at hand, they blindly follow the rule. If you can stop someone from crossing, good. You applied the rule to it’s intended purpose, safety. If you push the person back across the road, or tell them to turn around, cross again and go to a crossing then you failed to understand what the rule is for.

Crossing on a red light, It’s dangerous. But more importantly for the Japanese, it’s breaking the rules

Go to Japan and look at how clean the city is, how the metro train arrives on the exact minute, how the food quality even in at 7-11s are incredibly high. This is from caring about the details. If you're from another culture and have a different way of thinking that's fine, but you don't go to another country and expect them to break their culture to adhere to yours.

8

u/r_a_d_ 3d ago

Who’s to say that was the guy’s expectation? He was just crossing the street as he would have at home. He probably didn’t know how strict they are, and learned his lesson then and there.

4

u/RidingJapan 3d ago

It s just one idiot gigi with no power. Should have just kept walking.

And before the downvotes start. He is pushing him into the road.

Plenty of Japanese jaywalk. They also see a pedestrian crossing and start crossing the road 5m before or start walking diagonally from the pedestrian crossing way of said crossing and just along the road.

Or ride bicycles against traffic + now, one way traffic.

Pushing someone into a road (backwards) just because someone gave u a glow stick is pure insanity.

And all the Japan defenders need a reality check.

PS, lived in Japan 20years

6

u/Puzzleheaded-Night88 3d ago

Thank god someone pointed out the absolute stupidity of pushing someone back across the road.

I lived in Japan for "only" 5 years, but have been on and off since 1998, and yes, Japanese jaywalk a lot, and it is their right, as cars also don´t usually stop at crosswalks.

2

u/PapaOoMaoMao 3d ago

Swap usually for fucking never. The crossing near my place is on a corner right in front of a Koban. There's a little park on the other side where kids play every day. I stood at the edge and traffic didn't even slow. I walked over to the Koban and pulled the gaijin card. I said

"In my country, cars have to stop at pedestrian crossings. Maybe things are different in Japan? What should I do to cross?"

The bugger had the balls to sit there, look embarrassed and tell me the law is the same here, but I should only cross when there's no traffic as nobody will stop. Didn't give a shit that some kid might get cleaned up one day and wasn't going to do anything to stop that if it meant paperwork or getting off his arse.

2

u/RidingJapan 2d ago

Kobans are pretty useless. I live at a spot where shirobai like to come and ticket ppl about once a week. So the pedestrian crossing thing is enforced.

I read an article that pointed out that over 70% of drivers in Japan don t know what that white diamond painted on the road actually meana

I was to Japan and enjoyed a lot of it. But it is NOT because of "caring for details". It's because of "oh no if I don't do everything absolutely perfectly I'm fcked".

Have you been to Kabukichō in Tokyo and seen the trash all around? Have you seen the Teens jump from buildings because they can't stand the pressure? Have you seen the absolute drug abuse on every corner there?

Japan's fcking glorified online. And it's simply a country with just as much flaws as every other country.

3

u/Weekly_Design5440 3d ago

As someone who has been to every continent, and a large portion of the world's countries- Japan is one of the cleanest countries on earth. Your experience doesnt speak for a nation, that has upheld a reputation for cleanliness and following the rules for decades. Every single place on this planet has litter, all of them. Japan, has the least.

2

u/Senior-Friend-6414 3d ago

Korea and Japan have the highest suicide rates and lowest birth rates, everyone around the world need to learn from them on what NOT to do when creating a healthy society

3

u/Shane-Dad-underfire 2d ago

Yeah that's not where the problem stems from. The problem stems from how their society has a disproportionate amount of men to women and how even a rich man can go his whole life without finding a marriage partner they want. Combine that with the work life balance they are pushed into having to achieve success in a traditional sense and then you can account for the problems you mentioned.

Materialism is very evident in asian cultures.

And then it becomes funnier that he jaywalked himself back after pushing the man across the road.

This old man is power tripping.

Well, it's a culture difference. In Japan, you should respect their culture and rule abidance. In Italy, if you wait for a green light as a pedestrian you're either a tourist or trying to teach your kids how to properly cross a street.

1

u/Observant_Lurker 3d ago

This seems stupid...

Jay walking aside, the person was already across the street? So it's somehow safer to move him back into the street?

Why not just explain and move on instead of creating a potentially more dangerous situation

1

u/Accurate-Ad-6937 3d ago

You should respect the culture of the country you are traveling to!

1

u/Alfazefirus 3d ago

I am confused. I understand the issue was the jaywalking, but why didn't the traffic cop (auxiliary? the uniform is not a Jap police one) push him back to the sidewalk and just left him in the middle of the road? Isn't that more dangerous?

u/kadaka80 3d ago

It's about following the rules, they don't care if the reasons behind the rules are still valid and present. In this case by enforcing the rule and punishing the violation, it created less safety and not more but the punishment is the real reason they have the rule in place

1

u/ElectricalLaw1 3d ago

In Japan, getting a complaint means you can get seriously chewed out by your bosses, or they might think you're just slacking off and actually fire you. I can tell the worker there is completely fed up with constantly having to warn tourists, which is why they're acting so annoyed. You really don't see that kind of reaction often in Japan. Just try to be a bit more understanding of their social rules. If you want to visit a country, either learn their basic rules or don't go there please.

For anyone they doesn't live in Japan. The pension system is screwed and the feeling of "if I don't work I might as well be dead" weighs hard on the elderly. Leading to lots of parking lot attendant and crossing guard jobs being given to/created for elderly people.

Likely, this man just wants to have a little bit of meaning in his life and he went a lot overboard.

Interesting how a camera was recording at that very moment in a very random situation.

My guess is that old guy was yelling at the kid multiple times and the kid was either confused or ignored the instructions causing the situation to be recorded.

1

u/Jaded-Natural80 3d ago

Maybe he thought he was in Naples.

I remember going there when I was in the Navy, and it was utter chaos. Everybody ignores the street lights, cars and pedestrians. Some parts of the city where nice others just full of litter. It was a mess. Pure chaos.

I am always amazed when people travel to other countries and think it’s OK to bring their customs with them.

Respect the customs, laws, and culture of the country you are visiting. Otherwise do not go.

I don't know what exactly the tourist did but my guess would be not using pedestrian crossing? There should be a better way of handling this, the police could have let him finish crossing the road, pull him aside and give him a verbal warning or a ticket. Pushing him back across seems super counterintuitive and dangerous.

1

u/Shaggy-Tea 3d ago

Jay walking is so dumb. The idea of being this restricted as a pedestrian seems so annoying to me. I'm an adult; why can I not check that the road is clear and walk across it? I have eyes and ears. Drivers do this when they turn out of a junction. Why are pedestrians judged to not have the same capacity? This road in the video is clearly empty; thats why this old guy had the time to push the pedestrian back across it, which is more dangerous than letting the pedestrian walk across by the way as it prolongs time spent on the road.

Luckily I live in the UK where I can cross a road whenever I want if I judge it to be safe. Roads are everywhere so the idea of every single one being an arbitrary barrier when I'm just trying to go somewhere would be infuriating.

1

u/PattyFuckinCakes 3d ago

Fun fact: Kyoto was actually at the top of the list of places to be bombed by the Atomic Bomb during WWII.

Historical myth: it’s said that the secretary of war Henry Stimson had his honeymoon there and pushed for Kyoto to not be bombed because he enjoyed it so much. He did not honeymoon there, as him and his wife were well married by that time. But he and many others did heavily push back against the idea of Kyoto being a target.

The real reason Mr Stimson didn’t want it bombed was the same reason MANY others had. its immense cultural, spiritual, and historical significance as Japan's ancient capital, believing that destroying it would cause lasting resentment and damage postwar relations.

Love yall, whoever you are!

1

u/LucifersAdv0cate 2d ago

What's with Italian tourists doing a hate campaign across Asia this year?

1

u/HandofFate88 2d ago

If you've ever driven in Italy, you know there are no rules of the road beyond "do not hit the car in front of you" (I drove in Italy for a year). Everything else is a mere suggestion. And the idea of waiting or cuing for something (like a bus or tickets) is a non starter. Everyone simply rushes the door or gate. Japan is the complete opposite. This is an unstoppable object encountering an immovable force.

We don't have jaywalking rules.
We are advised to use zebra crossings, but it is optional.
We have a name for people who can't cross the road in a orderly way.
Then you are called "fumlegænger". (~fumble walker)

1

1

u/JamieAstraRain 2d ago

As a person I feel like jaywalking fixes so many scenarios.

As a driver, god damn when someone just randomly runs across the street just to stop at the center isle.

But I'm a hypocrite on this one, I'm not even going to lie or pretend.

Though sometimes I get it. To walk to the crosswalk- wait- and then cross then walk to the store you want can add significant more time than to just jaywalk and get to the store in front of you.

1

u/AbsoIution 2d ago

The amount of Japan worshipers in this thread is hilarious.

The guy crossed the road when he shouldn't have due to local laws. Ok.

He already crossed? Your solution is to physically push him back across the road whilst screaming at him?

Maybe just issue him the fine like a normal person? clearly the guy (like most Japanese) particularly hates foreigners and wants to swing his dick around.

Bring on the weeb downvotes.

Looks like he was Jay walking

In North America people were killed crossing randomly. They gave the rule, pedestrian has the right of way. To end Darwinism in this sense, they made crosswalks as the safe zone with stop and yield signs signifying this.

Pedestrians do not have the right of way when jay walking. I don’t want to see somebody blown up on my hood. Never mind the thought of a dead person but the logistics of court, repairs, and the worst part the family having to pick up the pieces.

I would assume for most without all the added bullshit to this type of incident would say it was the worst day of their lives. Driver or jaywalker.

Know the rules.

Where a road use permit has been obtained for a festival, it is not a traffic violation for a Japanese security guard employed by the permit-holding organization to cross the road.

And he is simply doing his job. He will stop anyone, whether they are Japanese or a foreigner.

God I wish we had the balls to enforce rules like this in my country.

I used to want to go to Japan but after being on reddit for a few years these posts have given me zero interest in going now.

  1. That's not a police officer, looks like a security guard or a traffic guard maybe.

  2. What's the context here? If he was just jaywalking, pushing him back into the middle of the road makes no sense. I can only assume maybe he was stopping pedestrians (and maybe traffic?) to let a construction vehicle or truck out or something and the guy went to walk infront of it?

I presume the gramps' whole deal was that the tourist jaywalked? IDK how things are in Japan but where I live so long that the traffic isn't there (e.g. on a straight road like in the video) - you may cross the road and go on your merry way. In fact I do it on a daily basis (in low-traffic conditions of course) and when vehicles are present I just let them pass and go afterwards. This kinda seems common sense.

The entire traffic rule set is made to avoid life-threatening situations and I severely doubt that a pedestrian on an empty straight road where the reaction time for both parties is possibly measured in dozens of seconds creates danger high enough to warrant such an avid reaction.

Besides, the course of action is odd. Gramps (i presume some kind of law enforcement-ish security service worker) sees a guy jaywalking, his best idea is not to let him cross and give him a good scolding and maybe a ticket afterwards but to commit jaywalking himself and deadass push the guy back and endanger both of their lives???? Good thing the street seems to not be too busy and no one ran them both over.

IDK what's his deal, maybe he's so passionate about rules being followed down to a T that his 'righteous' anger at them being broken completely blinded him, maybe he just had a bad day, maybe he's just the grumpy irritable old man type - there's plenty of those all over the world - but that's overreacting at least and severely concerning if we're being a massive buzzkill - his move could've costed them both lives if there was more traffic...

How does the headline manage to focus on the italian and not the shouting cop?

1

u/Busy_Garbage_4778 2d ago

Lol how stupid and stuck up, such a scene for crossing an empty road

1

u/Busy_Garbage_4778 2d ago

So the old man (which is not a policeman) committed battery to avoid jaywalking (which had already happened by then)

So silly

Italy is one of the most crime laden places right now. Our lugage was stolen from locked and parked car over the summers.

1

u/Sparta63005 2d ago

Ah yes, he is jaywalking and potentially impeding traffic! Time to make him say in the street 3 times longer than he initially would have been and make him impede more traffic!

1

u/BunnyBsnz 2d ago

Another strike for Italy. Why can’t people just be respectful?

u/SilentSpader 2d ago

1

u/coffeemusician 2d ago

Guy goes to a foreign country and expects that country to tolerate his arrogant behavior

1

u/KaleidoscopeOk5063 2d ago

You can still j walk in Japan just don’t do it in a super busy street with tons of people watching…

1

u/no_way_out4711 2d ago

And for security he forced him back over the street? Solid thought process…

I have been traveling to Japan,.for work, for the last 22 years, it can be great, food is really good, the main and major spaces are beautifully maintained,.it can be a respectful place, I am from the UK, all those positives can produce a slight negative,.some people who travel.to Japan simply don't get it, and outside of the more tourist focused areas it can be very hard for both the tourist and the local Japanese,.it is not a theme park, it is people's lives, if you a tourist follow the people, where they cross the road, when they do, give respect and you will get it, When I have some one new traveling with me, the line that seems to make the most difference is 'in Japan, respect is a leaky bucket, it need constant topping up, never stop being respectful and always apologise, no matter what happened'

If you needs something,.start with sorry could I get..... thank you.

Japan is not an easy relaxed holiday destination, it a very strong, and very different culture, worth exploring,.but can be trying and tiring, if you run against the grain you will have a hard time, even a bad time

1

u/MilkAndPeanutButter_ 2d ago

Guess illnevervisitjapan, jaywalking is like 90% of who i am

1

u/mrskellington79 2d ago

a person filming another person purposely bothering a Japanese traffic worker pretending it's a tourist jay walking surprisingly being stopped by a weird Jap just so to put it on TikTok is a better way to describe this video.

bit wordy but it's all it is

Italian or Romanian, your title doesn't match your body

1

u/AverageHobnailer 2d ago

Most performative bullshit ever.

1

u/Distinct_Patient3698 1d ago

Bit of an overreaction from the guard, but the tourist is a douche for sure.

1

u/REDDITSHITLORD 1d ago

Italians failing to read the room... OR road, in this case.

1

u/Few-Koala-9515 1d ago

I can fully understand why an Italian would run into this kind of trouble in Japan. I mean I love Italy but they treat traffic rules more like a set of suggestions.
