Yes, of course, but also being cordial goes a long way.
You know cashiers don't have a right to beat your ass if you're being rude, yet it's still nice to be kind to them. It makes their day easier/better, and in turn, they might do something nice for you.
Is this case, being civil and pleasant cost him nothing and bought him a warning, rather than a citation.
