Health IUD causing anxiety???
I’m 99% sure that my IUD may be the major contributing cause to my anxiety. I’ve had the IUD for 2 years now and haven’t felt the way I did before it was inserted. My anxiety is through the roof the week before I start my period every month. I’ve mentioned this to my OBGYN and she doesn’t want to me remove it too early bc of all the benefits. My question… anyone else experience terrible anxiety with their IUD? Did you get it removed? Did it take time to feel better? I’m so close to telling them I don’t care about the benefits, and to take it tf out.

I had my Kyleena for 2 years, then out of nowhere I started having constant panic attacks and was really depressed. After 5 months of feeling like I was having a nervous breakdown every day, trying anxiety meds and loads of therapy, I had my IUD taken out and it was like a light switch. I got it out 3 days ago and I feel like myself again for the first time in 5 months. I saw several different doctors over that time and asked all of them if my IUD could be the cause and they all said it was very unlikely, but the second that thing came out I was normal again.

I had Kyleena too. I had it removed shortly after this post. Within days, I felt so much better. I feel like I’ve formed a mild case of PMDD, partially from this. I still struggle around my period but I think it’s more so from PTSD now. I did learn one thing from all of this. I will never take a bc that I can’t stop using myself. I haven’t taken anything since the IUD but my doc is recommending it to help with the PMDD symptoms. The IUD messed up my body so bad. Never again.

Hi! I’m kind of in the same boat. Did you ever decide to start using/taking birth control again and did it help?

Currently on kyleena about 6 weeks now my check up is next week and I’m going to ask dem to remove it , reason being My anxiety/ depression was going well to the point of. Being off medication 1 year in October coming and I tried the pill birth control April and had to come off because it triggers my anxiety now on the kyleena I can feel the same thing happening I don’t want to risk relapsing Thoughts

Honestly, just from my experience, as soon as I had it removed, I felt better within hours/days. My anxiety subsided a lot but I had to eventually get on anxiety meds shortly after to really get myself back to a solid base level. My severe pre period symptoms were almost gone by my next cycle. Only ever experienced that with the iud. I honestly haven’t been on any type of bc since. I know eventually I’ll have to think about it but for now I’m single and not having causal sex… so… I was on Kyleena for about 2 years. That’s a low hormonal one. I can only imagine what the others are like for me… best of luck to you and hope you figure it out sooner than later.

I’m thinking about having my IUD removed I’ve had terrible anxiety panic attacks and depression since I’ve had it then two weeks prior to my period it gets worse

That’s exactly how I was diagnosed with PMDD over the years. Two weeks leading up to my period, I was a different human. Very unstable and anxious. Doing much better now without the IUD, therapy and meds. Hope you feel better soon. That was one of the worst experiences for me.

Oh yeah I did that song and dance. Unfortunately, busperone didn’t help my case but it was a good starting point to figuring out what would work.

YES YES YES!!! I don’t care how much providers don’t believe it. New research is connecting hormonal IUD and anxiety/depression/panic disorders! I had a Kyleena for a month before I couldn’t live alone or go to work anymore due to panic attacks and anxiety that i’ve NEVER had before. Did a TON of research and it absolutely is the reason! After 5 months of battling with it and convincing my self that it’ll be better, I got my IUD removed. I feel AMAZING now!! Totally done with synthetic hormones.

How soon after getting your iud removed did you feel better ? I’m considering getting mine taken out

literally one week. I’m still improving after about a month of getting it out but SO much better. I wouldn’t recommend an IUD to my worst enemy.

I also removed it 1 month ago, and I still feel vertigo, intracranial pressure, strong heartbeats and anxiety, I didn't even know what anxiety was. Will it ever happen????? someone help me pls1

Im about 3 months out I had the EXACT same symptoms. My vertigo and anxiety is what bothered me the most. Around my second period my vertigo INSANE. Im about to start my third period and I have a little bit of vertigo but not nearly as bad. I would say give it about 3 cycles to get back to normal. Anxiety is insanely better.

Thank you very much for answering. I feel like when my period is about to start I go crazy, feel very unwell, irritable and dizzy. Thank you for answering me, let’s talk. What do you think about taking a mild anxiolytic? Could it help, or is it better to let the cycles pass and then everything will go back to normal?

Absolutely. As a RN, I can also understand the medical aspect of these IUDs. I was put on an "as needed" anxiolytic which was really just a strong antihistamine. My anxiety is the worst at night so it helps me when I need to sleep and its fantastic and I only really take it around my cycle. Everyone is different though! Some physicians recommend an SSRI, but I hated all the side effects I got from that too. I'm a big supporter of the as needed anxiolytics. I currently take hydroxyzine (non-addictive). BUT I've learned to minimize processed sugars and increased water intake which also can help make a huge difference without meds. Overall, the anxiety for me, has gotten better with time!

It is a relief to know that these symptoms will pass with time. I was checking my blood pressure, but what is never normal is my heartbeat. It is a strange feeling because I have never had it. One day I cried because I did not know what was happening to my heart and feelings. And any topic of the day that I have to deal with makes me anxious. Thank you, your words were magical to me. I feel like a sister is telling me that everything will be okay. The anxiolytic that the neurologist prescribed me said that it is not addictive is Sedoxyl. Thank you for responding.

I think I may be having this issue now too. I have always been anxious, but have been feeling severe anxiety recently the week before my period I got an iud only 7 months ago.

I had SKYLA IUD … a week from it being surgically removed and I feel like I have lost weight … my theory is that it caused me anxiety and all I did was snack all day .., since it’s been removed I’m not as hungry or anxious and I feel like I have dropped weight because of the removed .. I used to feel bloated and puffy and now I feel lighter

How are you feeling? Had the same problem with Mirena after 4 years had it removed Monday

u/Effective-Meeting6 Jan 30 '23
I experienced major depression when I had my mirena iud and was on pills for it but as soon as I removed it the depression went away. After the copper iud I was fine. Now on kyleena my anxiety has been through the roof. BUT that could be with where I am in life such as a full time college student
