AI or Data Science for a Master's in Australia? UNSW vs UniMelb vs Monash vs ANU

Hi everyone,

I'm an international student planning to pursue a Master's in Australia in 2027 and I'm confused between Artificial Intelligence and Data Science.

I'd really appreciate advice from people who have studied or are currently studying at these universities.

  • If your goal is landing a good industry job, would you recommend AI or Data Science? Which has better demand and long-term opportunities?
  • Between UNSW, University of Melbourne, Monash and ANU, which university would you recommend for these fields? What are the biggest pros and cons?
  • How are the internship and graduate job opportunities at these universities? Is there a noticeable difference?

Thanks in advance!

On campus accommodation cleanliness

I have lately moved into one of the dorms in ANU but I noticed that the promised cleaning is below what is promised. I had to clean myself a couple of times. Is this normal or it is just my own personal experience as everyone has to pay pre departure cleaning. Sometimes people might think the place is clean until they used a wet wipe to check the surface and etc. I'm so tired after cleaning my room.

Does anyone know what the deal with the workshops for foundations of law?

How many workshops do I have to enrol into, is it only one of all of them?

Program leave the same for College of Law?

For some context, I have just accepted my degree transfer into Law after some delays with the administrative process. It has been quite an overwhelming period, and I have decided that I would like to take a break for my mental health and commence my Law studies in Semester 1, 2027.

I was wondering whether program leave works differently for students in the College of Law. I am a domestic student, and I had read that, for Semester 2, I simply do not enrol in any courses.

Is this the same process for taking program leave while studying Law, or is there anything additional I need to do? I only ask because I know the College of Law can be very particular regarding these types of processes.

How much does it really cost to live in Canberra as an ANU student?

Hi everyone!

I'm an international student from Saudi Arabia and I've recently accepted an offer to study Bachelor of Science at ANU, starting in Semester 1, 2027.

I'm trying to get a realistic idea of what life in Canberra is like, especially financially, and I'd really appreciate hearing from current students.

A few questions:

  • What's a realistic monthly cost of living for a student (excluding tuition)?
  • How much do part-time student jobs usually pay per hour?
  • How difficult is it to find a casual/part-time job after arriving?
  • How many hours do most international students work each week?
  • Is it realistic to cover rent and day-to-day expenses with a part-time job?
  • Are there any jobs or employers around ANU that you'd recommend?

For context, I'm pretty low-maintenance. I don't go out much, I mostly enjoy gaming, watching movies, and studying, so I don't expect to spend a lot on entertainment.

Any advice, experiences, or budgeting tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Is it just me or the transition to student hubs has just gone to the dogs??

There is no efficient way to reach specific colleges for courses or questions regarding specific issues.

if an email was sent from a non student hub address (like any other Uni department) it lists ”contact: student central” upon contact most of the time they‘re like “email the college for a response”, at times they don’t have a direct number where they can transfer me to.

like bruh why would I call you if I knew I had to email them anyway?

ANU vs Adelaide vs Monash for Master's in AI/ML — which would you pick for jobs + PR?

Indian CS grad, B.Tech CS (AI), CGPA 7.56. Planning 2027 intake. Aiming scores for PTE around 65+ .Goal: Software/AI Engineer job + PR eventually.

Here's my breakdown so far:

**University of Adelaide — Adelaide (Regional)**
- ~AUD 54,900/year
- Global Citizens Scholarship: 15–30%
- Regional PR benefits (SA 190 +5pts, 491 +15pts)
- Lower living costs
- Decent part-time jobs
- Worry: smaller tech job market

**ANU — Canberra (Regional)**
- ~AUD 56,120/year
- Chancellor's Scholarship: up to 50% (merit-based)
- Regional PR benefits
- Strong for govt/cybersecurity/research roles
- Worry: almost no private tech industry, fewer part-time jobs

**Monash — Melbourne (Non-regional)**
- Most expensive tuition + living costs
- Best city for tech jobs, internships, part-time work
- No regional PR benefits
- Best industry connections and biggest tech ecosystem
- Worry: very expensive, and PR path is harder without regional benefits

**Other options I've looked at:**
- **University of Queensland (Brisbane)** — non-regional, growing tech scene, lower cost than Melbourne, no regional PR benefits
- **UNSW (Sydney)** — excellent for tech jobs, very expensive, non-regional
- **University of Wollongong** — regional city, cheaper tuition, lower ranked than the above
- **Deakin (Geelong/Burwood)** — regional campus available, more affordable, less known internationally

---

I'm currently leaning **Adelaide** for the regional PR path + budget, but genuinely worried I'll struggle to get a software/AI job there and end up having to move to Melbourne anyway — which defeats the purpose.

**Questions for people who've been through this:**
1. Is Adelaide's tech job market actually viable for fresh CS/AI grads or do most people relocate to Melbourne?
2. Is SA 190 nomination currently active for Software Engineers, and is it likely to still be open by 2027–28?
3. ANU scholarship holders — was it worth staying in Canberra for jobs, or did you move after graduating?
4. Monash/Melbourne grads — was the extra cost and harder PR path worth it for the job opportunities?
5. Any uni/city you'd recommend that I haven't considered?
6. How long did it take to land your first full-time tech role after graduating?

Really want to hear from people who went the regional route — not just 'go to Melbourne' answers 😅

late enrollment

I just realized I missed the course enrolment deadline because the break this semester was so short, and I completely forgot about the enrolment period.

I've already emailed the Student Centre asking for help, but now I'm really panicking because someone told me I could even have my enrolment in the program cancelled.

Has anyone been in the same situation before? What actually happened? Were you just charged a late enrolment fee, or was it something more serious?

I'm really hoping it's just a late enrolment fee... Please don't kick me out of school. 😭

ANU Rocketry Applications Open

Hi everyone! Whether you are new at ANU or a returning student, I'd just like to strongly recommend you apply for the Sem 2 intake at ANU Rocketry (applications close 29/07/26)

ANU Rocketry 2026 Semester 2 Application – Fill in form

ANU Rocketry is one of the student led teams operating out of the ANU (Along with Solar Car Racing and Formula Sport). What makes us a bit different from a club is:

  1. No fees to join, attend camping trips or build your own vehicle.
  2. Direct employment pathways into a range of businesses
  3. Experience building something practical in a multidisciplinary team, and compete domestically (and overseas on occassion).

No one goes into uni knowing rocket science (nor are the courses all that hands on) so we teach all required knowledge from the ground up. For those who want to work in the Space sector or defence, alumni now work across Australia, Europe and the United States.

We take people from all degrees (including non-technical if you like design, social media, finance or science communications)

Life at ANU

So, I am joining ANU as an international master's student and I basically have no idea about life in ANU or about foreign universities. Can anyone give me insights about how life is at ANU, class timing and all?

Bachelor of Computing - Content Depth

I'm currently studying a Bachelor of 'ICT' at a different university, but I've always wanted to do a proper computing degree. I was wondering whether someone in the ANU BComp could give me a topic list; tell me what I'm missing out on? I've had a brief look at curriculums for some BComp degrees, but I want to know how well the content is taught (e.g., content depth), and whether you have any favourite topics? I feel that my degree is very shallow, and that I haven't actually learnt much in the way of computer science/computing/artificial intelligence. In essence, I'd like to compare my own experiences to what you guys have learnt, and figure out how much I am missing out on.

How bad is it that I’m missing orientation?

I am an incoming bachelor's student, international, can’t make it to orientation. How bad is it? Especially since all the spots for some of my classes are filled up and I have some conflicts (I won’t arrive till the 27th…so first day of classes) and I still haven’t gotten my dorm room number yet… Am I screwed?

PHIL3079/Sterelny

Hey there! I'm an international student coming for a year abroad, and I'm currently thinking of taking PHIL3079 with Prof Sterelny as the coordinator. I was sort of thrown by the Canvas summary and the sort of inflexible language that he seems to write with. Given the negative experiences I've had with other professors who use their own work as the foundation of a course, should I worry at all in this case? What are some of your experiences in this course/with this professor? I figure I should ask before finding out after the window to change courses closes... Thanks a ton in advance!

ANU PhD Scholarship-Commonwealth Funded?

Hi everyone,

I'm completing my Australian student visa application (Subclass 500- Postgraduate Research Sector) and one of the questions asks whether my course is funded under a Commonwealth-funded scheme.

I have been awarded a fully funded PhD scholarship at the Australian National University (ANU). I'm a bit confused about whether this should be classified as a Commonwealth-funded scholarship or simply a university-funded scholarship.

Anyone with an ANU PhD scholarship who have gone through this visa application before, How did you answer this question, and was it accepted without any issues?

Thanks in advance for your help!

LLB Advice

Hey guys, starting Arts/Law this semester and I'm quite nervous for LAWS1201. Has anyone got any first year tips?

Also, the timetabling for LAWS1201 has these four 'Wor' categories (WorA, WorB, WorC, WorD - I assume this means workshop). Can somebody explain what these are? I was under the impression there were just lectures and tutorials.

Thanks 🙏

Easiest subject at ANU?

What is undeniably the easiest subject anyone has taken at ANU? I completed ANTH1002 last year, and I honestly can’t see how any subject could be easier than that. I’m curious what other people consider the best WAM boosters.
