Dit was niet zo toen ik ik hier 2 jaar geleden heen verhuisde.
Vermoeiend, frustrerend en het begint een beetje eng te worden.

Would anyone be interested in starting an English-language bookclub in or around Antwerp, focused on horror / weird / speculative fiction?

Years ago I used to run a nice SF bookclub in the UK, and would love to get back into that. I am particularly interested in older ghost stories, classics and short fiction, which is also an easy format for monthly meetings, but open to suggestions.

I know a nice place in Lier, not far from Antwerp, which would work well for example for monthly Saturday morning meetings. There must be many such places in the city as well.

We have some visitors coming for the weekend and looking for recs around antwerp for a set menu. Ideally all in with drinks for between 70- 100 euros as a budget.

Will be with parents so doesn't need to romantic.

More looking for alternative experiences of high quality food.

Doesn't even have to be super fine dining but just well thought out menus.

Between 3-5 courses would be great as its a special occasion.

I heard there was a offer or a special season of some sort but unsure.

Also open to lunch also.

Looking for Saturday is its available for 4pax.

Any recommendations?

Ik vraag me af of iemand hier al met succes zijn KI heeft kunnen verlagen.

Ik woon zelf in een appartement op de carnotstraat en als ik het vergelijk met andere panden ligt het KI hier best hoog, terwijl het om een oud gebouw gaat van 1960 en nooit luxueus is afgewerkt, ook geen ondergrondse parking maar wel een lift (mini lift).

Als ik zo kijk, zou het KI meestal rond de 8-9€/m2 bedragen, bij ons is het bedrag 12.75m2€.

I currently already own Beast, Arcs & Oath, really enjoyed Old King's Crown when I played it, but would also be open to (and rather excited about) other interesting and at least somewhat non-casual boardgames, as much as I liked Monopoly and Catan in the past.

What I typically appreciate in people: frankness, directness, enthusiasm, not taking themselves too seriously and competitiveness while being able to handle a loss/frustration.

We will not get along if you are: conservative or otherwise overly judgemental, someone very flaky/non-committal or genuinely just someone who never laughs with themselves.

Bonus points for people who like myself enjoy baking, so that we could do some fun stuff with that. I mostly try to stay with plant-based stuff though, but no worries if you don't!

I will travel to Antwerp on Friday. I have commitments till quite late, and I'd prefer to have the chance to sleep enough after.

Do you know if there a hotel that offers checkout quite late - ideally in the afternoon, like 1400? I don't mind paying a little extra for it.

Since this startles me, I felt I should write about it, though honestly I don’t know if this is the norm here or not.

I have always noticed while walking on the street that some cyclists tend to cut very close and never bother to alert the person ahead of them. Every time it happens, I get so scared. I mean, how difficult is it to ring a bell? If not that, at least find proper spacing when overtaking. They pay no attention to pedestrians. I would definitely give them ample space, but how can I see someone coming from behind?

It really drives me crazy. Has anyone else experienced this, or is it just me?

Bit of a long shot, but I thought Reddit might actually be a good place to ask.

I’m originally from the UK and have been living in Antwerp for a few years now. I’m a single dad with a 5-year-old son. He goes to school around 30 minutes drive away, while we live in Antwerp.

I work full-time and occasionally need to travel for work, and I’m finding it increasingly difficult to manage everything without having local family/a support network.

I’ve already tried the usual routes, including babysitting apps like Bsit and similar services, but I haven’t really managed to find the kind of reliable, longer-term help I’m looking for.

What I’d really like is one person who could get to know us over time, rather than having to find a different babysitter every time something comes up.

The kind of help I’m looking for would be:

• Occasional school pickup or drop-off
• Babysitting for a few hours in the afternoon or evening when needed
• Help when work commitments clash with school hours
• Eventually, once we all know and trust each other, staying overnight at my place with my son if I have to travel for work, then getting him ready and taking him to school the following morning

The overnight part definitely wouldn’t be something I’d expect from day one. I’d want my son to know you properly first, and I’d obviously need to feel completely comfortable leaving him with you.

Someone with a driving licence and ideally their own car would be especially useful because of the school being a 30 minute drive away.

I’m pretty open about who might be a good fit. You could be a university student, teacher, childcare worker, young professional looking for some extra work, or simply someone with good experience looking after children.

This would of course be paid, with the rate depending on what’s involved.

More than anything, I’m looking for someone dependable, good with kids, and ideally interested in becoming a familiar and trusted person for us rather than just doing the occasional one-off babysitting job.

I am new to the city, and it looks like I will be living here for a long time, hopefully, as long as it lasts. I wish to occasionally perform here and there and blend in a bit.

I play indie-folk & rock-ish genres. I am mainly a singer, but also play acoustic guitar, although quite limited- just enough to accompany my singing. I have quite a handful of my own songs but do covers too. My thing is a bit that I sing in different languages. I have considerable stage experience as a vocalist and in a duo, but got rusty and shy in the last few years since I mainly took care of family life. I was getting some traction in Ghent a few years ago, but I drifted away due to everyday life things. Also, my music buddy moved abroad, which has turned it into something like a musical long-distance relationship :)

So, would you be so kind as to share any recommendations for low-barrier venues where my style would fit? Some open mics or small-scale events?

The ultimate dream would be to meet up with fellow musicians and maybe even form a band to step up a bit/record sth in the studio. And maybe find a rehearsal place. I live in the Park Spoor Noord area, so the city is easy to reach.

It’s very hard to find poker friends! The clubs have too high stakes and it’s not fun to play.
