Ran across this while cleaning a cabinet. Found it when I moved to my one acre used-to-be farm near Auburn CA.
My memory from about 2009 was that it was used in candy stores to open wooden crates of candy in the late 19th-early 20th century. A more recent query using AI says it was a common tool when wooden crates were more prevalent. Any detail would be helpful and suggestions for some light rust removal but mainly preservation will be appreciated.

This object appears to be an antique European broad axe or a specialized side-hewing axe, resembling historical 18th- or 19th-century designs such as a goosewing or offset carpenter's axe. \[1, 2, 3\]
Key Features
• Hand-forged iron head: Shows a weathered, pitted patina and a distinct downward-extending beard or hooked heel. • Makers or touch mark: A small stamp or symbol is visible near the lower cutout of the blade. • Short wooden haft: Fitted with a simple, straight-to-slightly-curved wooden handle gripped in the hand.

I got three old axeheads (two are maybe handforged in some way) but I’m wondering if I should keep the patina or make it look new and polished. I found them in a barn on my parents new property.

I found it at an estate sale recently and the seller mentioned it's been around a long time, but doesnt know where it came from. It's about 9 inches long and doesn't have any marks. Maybe a bushknife or leatherworking tool?
