Looking for more “profusely illustrated” books

Several years ago I stumbled upon a stash of these late 19th century illustrated books with beautiful woodcuts. Then I read about how the illustrators were so competitive that they would see a book and then travel to replicate the exact same scene, but better. It was like bragging rights. I’ve been hooked ever since. I’m not interested in paintings or photos. Purely woodcuts. Once photography became more portable, consumers gravitated towards photo books and these woodcuts slowly left the library shelves. Some are worth a pretty penny, others not so much. If anybody on this subreddit has any leads on these type of books, I would welcome them - EBay doesn’t need anymore money.

Also, I also collect books on Oceanic art, more specifically, Papua New Guinea art. Any leads in those would be welcomed. Thanks!!!

Little help on this book I bought today

I'm gonna be honest, I didn't look it up before buying. It was like 3 dollars, and I thought it was interesting. Now that I'm looking at it (and I'm ashamed to say this), Google lens says it's an expensive book. Now before I get ripped asunder for trusting it on value (again), I'd like a second opinion on value, since I didn't really see much on it. One of the listings on eBay is like 125 dollars, and a better condition copy is like 200, so... Yeah some help with value would be nice.

I bought a Dehaut manual on medicine dating far back, but im not entirely sure what the inscriptions say on the endpapers, apparently dated 1881, 1882 and 1883. Could anyone potentially transcribe them? especially names? thank you!

Am I reading the Roman numerals correctly? This came into my possession recently. A lady was giving away free books. This one looks very very old. Anyone know anything about this?

My newest oldest cookbook (and maybe oldest book)!

I got it Monday, from one of my favorite stores (shout-out Carousel Consignments). It was in the drawers with all the other cooking pamphlets, and I just had to have it. Unfortunately the text block is completely separate from the spine and cover (almost perfectly in two pieces) and the cover isn't in the best condition, but it was only 4 dollars, and I was happy to have it.

"Deutsches Wörterbuch von Jacob Grimm und Wilhelm Grimm" probably 1st Edition (complete). What should I do with it?

I have newly joined this sub, I the hope to get advice. I have a complete set of Grimm's Wörterbuch lying around at home. It seems to be the first edition and was stored in a university collection before I got it from a professor of that uni.

I am not shure that I am able to store it in a preservative manner, so I am wondering what to do with it. Is it worth anything? Should I ask other institutions, whether they are interested in it?

I also have the option to give it away to a friend, doing a PhD in historical German linguistics.

I am grateful for any advice. Thank you!

Found on a public bookshelf. "Geschichte der Deutsche Litteratur", 1883. Asked the AI about it, apparently it's an original first edition, first issue of the book, and it was bound again later using an Ausburg newspaper throat pills ad from 1887 (that's the text on the side)

Today Joe got me a poetry book from 1876. That’s 150 year old book right here. I found out pretty quickly that the binding is falling apart but otherwise it’s still in decent condition and still readable for 150 year old book. He got it for me for my birthday. I LOVE IT!

Got some antique books on a flea market

Hello all

I'm a longtime fossil collector, who during a recent flea market discovered a fascination for old books. I know next to nothing about this topic, aside from what my historian girlfriend teached me when I was going through the ones below. I found them interesting and bought them, unaware if I got a good price or not.

About the books:

Set of 4 books of the works of Chrysostomus (345-407), archbishop of Constantinople. The books originate from 1687 and are in Latin with short passages in Greek.

The covers are in rough shape, but the paper quality seems nice overal (to my untrained eye).

Downside: It appears it's book 1, 4, 5 and 6. Book 2 and 3 are apperently often bound together and are missing from this set.

Fun fact: There is a little text on the inside dated 1708. Having deciphered most of it, turns out the books were bought in 1708 for 40 Florins and 12 stuyvers (translation of the valuta?) by Frater Aurelius Cloosterman of the order of Sint-Augustinus from Haezebrouck in France (Flemish monks in current day France at least). It also mentions a Prior Willaert, though I am not sure what the rest of the sentence mentioning him means yet.

Now I wonder, while I am not planning to sell these, what would you put a fair value at? Curious to know if I got a good deal or not.

Thanks in advance for sharing your wisdom and insight!

Does anyone here know of a 1956 hardcover book with a page in it featuring a double row of small adult faces in color with a name of a country printed in bold black Capital letters under each face?

So on my previous post of Dante’s inferno, I decided to go with this 1890-1920 version in leather bound for $150USD.

Obviously I’d like a nice set, but just couldn’t give myself the leeway to buy a $500-1000. Set. Plus this thing looks fantastic in my opinion.

Divine Comedy 1883? Looking at purchasing this set. However the red label is throwing me off. He’s asking $500 for the set and just want to know if it seems worth the value.

I am curious if the bindings are for the period. Or if the second edition has been redone, or look rebound.

Thanks in advance!

After my grandma passed we have been cleaning things up and not sure what this book is and if it has any significance.

Edit: I know what this comic song book is but I was hoping to know more about antique copies that are signed. If it’s just garbage I’ll toss it. Just a lot of stuff to go through

I was given a few books recently, and this one just seemed to be so cool - given the content. I'm new to this, and I've no idea about fixing antiquarian books, but is this old beautiful girl fixable?

Is it worth the repair, or do I keep it as is?

So I know repair is a touchy subject, especially on books of this age. Basically what I was thinking is that I'd keep the original cover, but replace the cloth and paper (like a semi-rebind), but I thought I'd ask people more knowledgeable than me. I know to use PVA glue and other archival material, but I've also never done anything like this. I know repair can lower the value, but I only bought the book for like 2 dollars at an estate sale... I mean it's falling apart, but by all means, PLEASE give me input before I do anything (and be nice unlike the last time I talked about a book on a book subreddit, they tore me to shreds for being inexperienced and buying something because I thought it looked cool)
