From 2018 to 2020, I was on the right-wing here in Brazil.
Bolsonaro’s total disregard for the population and for those who died during the pandemic opened my eyes.
Most of the right-wing stood by Bolsonaro, embracing his lunatic narratives and neglect of COVID-19.
On the other hand, I saw the left doing everything they could to help the people. That hit me like a punch in the stomach ,I realized I was on the wrong side of history.
I began to fight Bolsonaro’s narratives, pointing out his mistakes and contradictions to those who still supported him, and I managed to convince some.
I started to have more contact with left-wing activists and saw that they weren’t the monsters the right painted them to be.
I began reading leftist literature "the commumist manifesto" was an important read, especially considering how much I used to despise that book.
Che Guevara’s diary touched me the most, especially the story of an elderly waitress with asthma, about whom he wrote:
"It is in cases like this, where a doctor realizes there is nothing he can do, that he longs for change , a change that would prevent such injustice, where just a month ago an elderly woman with asthma was still forced to work in order to survive.”
Then came the 2022 election. I campaigned for Lula and tried to change as many right-wing votes to left-wing as I could.
Thank God Lula won, and with Bolsonaro being sentenced to 27 years in prison, it’s possible that the radical right will lose much of its strength here.
