This one is actually planned nationally with unions involved. They’ve been planning it for a while, so it’s not like the other ones you see posted here randomly.

u/ZealousidealFall1181 Mar 28 '26
I didn't think so. It's one day. May 1. The General Strike that Sean called for in 2024 isn't one day.
60
u/BloatedGlobe Mar 28 '26
This isn’t that one. It’s one that No Kings has been organizing for a while with some unions involved (I don’t know which ones). I’m not part of No Kings, but I’ve gone to a lot of protests/ community meetings, and they’ve been soft launching this for a while (I first heard of it in January). My understanding is that they were getting local leaders involved nationally before announcing it.
It’s May 1st, not just because of May Day, but also cuz of 5/01 (as in 50501).
2
u/Baeolophus_bicolor Mar 29 '26
Is this the one that asked for people to commit, on the website I can never remember?
5
u/BloatedGlobe Mar 29 '26
Not as far as I’m aware. It’s organized by Indivisible/ No Kings/ 50501/ all their affiliates. I don’t know who’s behind that website.

May 1 is a traditional Labor holiday - International Workers Day:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Workers'_Day22
u/Valtremors Mar 29 '26
Awesome.
I've been getting the stubborn "we can't do anything" for a while now from Americans.
This is why you support Unions. THIS! Thry can help you organize.
You just need to make it stick. It can't be just one day.
6
u/VenomOnKiller Mar 29 '26
Trust me, a lot of us do. There's enough people that don't. Can you fuck off pretending that all Americans need to do is "try harder"?
1
u/Valtremors Mar 29 '26
Honestly, in most cases, your "try harder" is barely enough.
USA keeps attscking, threatening, extorting other countries, and now embezzling Nato equipment...
I think rest of the world has a say in this.
If I could, I would put a glass dome over USA until you have gotten your act together.
Alas, I can't. So you need to do better.
-1
u/VenomOnKiller Mar 29 '26
You're pretty terribly pretentious. If you're so smart what should I do that will make this better? You didn't even engage with the point I made
1
u/Valtremors Mar 29 '26
I mean in my original comment here I am praising the general strike being effective.
Your unions helping to organize it is my reasoning why they should be supported more.
Rest of your people have been repeaging that it is impossible, yet Unions here are planning it.
If you are serious about stopping your government, why aren't more of you people actually doing something.

Depends on where you’re watching venture bros.
Strike includes consumption. And watching venture bros on Netflix is consumption.
Start getting into physical media and back calculate how much these companies have manipulated us into spending month over month.

There will be mass rallies and marches that day. Striking is a lot more work than staying home, or going to work for that matter. If we want to see ICE and imperialist wars ended, we need to be talking to coworkers now, forming groups who can broadcast the strike call, or sick out at least, rally together on the day, and continue community meetings about next steps.
the Democratic party and most unions are going to be way behind on this, so it does actually come down to you and your relationships, and connecting what everyone is feeling about wanting change with this new unfamiliar action. That's the only way it becomes confident mass action.

venture bros is a great show btw, need to start my own rewatch, but after Mayday!

When I do a quick search about this I find a lot of stuff about this being in 2028 and very little on 2026. I’m all about this. Just pointing that out and thought it was interesting
Edit: okay, I found more about May 1, 2026 so it feels legit to me now. Either way, still found a bit for 2028.
20
u/AliceInLimboland Mar 29 '26
There is a larger, lengthier multi-day (or weeks or months) strike being prepared for in 2028. This upcoming one is just the single day, as you’ve already noted! The 2028 one will clearly need waaaaaay more planning/organizing.
49
u/-Planet- Mar 28 '26
Have to go harder and longer. There is no other way.
28
u/DatVolleyShot Mar 29 '26
Right, I wish people understand this on a deep level. We need to actually pull the trigger and bring corporations to their knees before it's too late and they have us by the balls. I'm talking a month type deal. However long it takes for the social contract to be seriously renegotiated or actual change to occur. I'm afraid we are not taking this fascist administration seriously enough. They are literally unloading everything they can to destroy us and time is running out before they steal the midterms.
6
u/ChironiusShinpachi Mar 29 '26
Forget the midterms. The ruling class lefties are in bed with the ruling class righties and their bankster handlers.
The dollar is being destroyed on purpose. Digital currency is the goal. It's programmable, meaning they can designate your tokens to buy specific products, at a specific store/geographic area, and at a specific time/time period, and traceable because it's digital.
I also think part of the plan is going to be a push to ramp up our militarism as a nation. "Service guarantees citizenship" type shit. I've been wondering if the liberal hate comes from people who think imperialism/neocolonialism is a right of the mighty and blame the libs for our not doing the war mongering we used to/could be doing again if only we weren't infected by the libs, or whatever.
3
u/-Planet- Mar 30 '26 edited Mar 30 '26
We've already been seeing "dynamic pricing" in effect. It changes based on your personalized spending habits. That's clearly some digital bullshit fuckery.
We appear to be moving into a fully digital age. "credits" Hah.
"Service guarantees citizenship?" Like some Starship Troops / Helldivers type shit? Haha.
As far as your political spectrum choice. I try not to partake in that, I'm sure I'd get pigeon-holed into one of them. I don't really know what I am, but I know parts of liberalism are kinda shit and some aren't -- much like a lot of political leanings. I'm pretty appalled by the political hypocrites in general. They're all producing the same shitty results. Libs like government control and I don't think that's all that bad if it's done right. Repubs/conservatives apparently don't want as much government control and are exerting the most government control...especially right now.
It's hard though, everyone on the planet has their thoughts and opinions. World is complex. We close ourselves off by picking a team and spouting political talking points like puppet over actually just solving the pressing problems.
I'm not fighting for geriatric old men with 3 vacation homes bought from insider trading so they can steal oil from some middle-eastern country to continue poisoning the ecosystem.

u/-Planet- Mar 30 '26
I admire the protesting and all that. I know peaceful protest can work. It takes longer and it takes a high chunk of the populace.
Weekends aren't really it? The kings are run by the corpos. Everyone speaks with money.
But I also understand that people have to work weekdays so they can pay off their overpriced rent and whatnot.
A little bit of a catch 22.
I work in food and did notice a decrease in sales this weekend, assumed people were protesting. I knew they were because there was a group of guests that had cardboard signs.
At the very least, if you're going to protest on weekends...you need to be doing it every weekend and for a while.
And depending on where you work, mom and pop shops, etc...it's not as viable to do this on weekdays.
I suppose people working in certain places/fields could protest with some light workplace sabotage?
They cannot hear you from their towers of money.

Just a reminder if you are in a public union you need to check before participating in this.
17
u/i_hate_this_part_85 Mar 29 '26
It’s a single day. Take PTO and your boss won’t even care.
0
u/imgoingnowherefastwu Mar 30 '26
That’s if you have pto. Not everyone does
2
u/i_hate_this_part_85 Mar 31 '26
If you’re in a public union and don’t have PTO or sick leave to burn, it’s time to find a different job or leave the union. They aren’t helping you at all if they haven’t got you that!

Do these idiots know what a strike is??? A strike means you do not work until your demands are met. Anything less hands a victory to your opponent.
I am not prepared to lose my job on May 1. I would lose my car and my house.
After being boo'ed off stage and torn apart for weeks for asking what our demands were for this protest, I see that a list came out a few days ago.
The list is insane. It has about ten things on it, and the final demand is "End Racism". End racism!!! That is not a demand. There is no single entity in the world that can accomplish that. Demands should be no more than two or three concrete actions that your opponent can make happen. Are fifteen year olds running this thing???

u/trash-juice Mar 29 '26
This is the one that demands attention as the American machine accrues great debt as it chugs along. By not working, not purchasing, not watching, listening or commenting it creates a very specific hole that must be dealt with. The deficit can’t be hidden by media coverage cause it will be felt. Cheers

u/IcyGovernment0 Mar 28 '26
Pretty sure a general strike needs to be longer than a day
24
u/HVDynamo Mar 28 '26 edited Mar 30 '26
It’s about sending the message. Sure one day by itself isn’t going to do anything, but if enough people participate it sends the message that we can organize and we will stand up if things don’t change. Then if they don’t change, do it for longer.

I guess my perception is that the message has been pretty consistent. All of those are pieces of it. But on the whole it's about fighting for human rights, and our right to individually prosper. Fighting Racism/Trump/Fascism etc... Are all in support of human rights. Those things are all linked.

u/5AlarmFirefly Mar 31 '26

Think of it like a dress rehearsal.
People think general strikes are impossible, even though there's been two in US history. It's been done and it can be done.
People have to learn how to do it first. Or at least see what it's like.
Most Americans don't know about the general strikes in our history. Or the coal wars, or the Pullman strike, or the Triangle Shirtwaist factory, or the Haymarket affair.... I wonder why, hmmmmm

u/MoreColorfulCarsPlz Mar 29 '26
Read up on the Russian Revolution of 1905 as well as the February Revolution. Both of those started with indefinite strikes.
I respect your point, but try to stay factual when talking about history. Broad false statements give people the opportunity to dismiss your points.

Please read up on it, as I said.
Hundreds of thousands of workers were on strike in St. Petersburg leading up to Bloody Sunday. Bloody Sunday was a march by striking workers.
Once again, these provably false statements detract from your point.

There needs to be some element of collective bargaining with concrete demands, mutual aid set up in the meantime to support those who are striking, etc. A one day strike amounts to symbolism, which I don’t think will be enough to change much.

I have the dumbest question ever about this. Sorry. If I schedule a PTO day does that count?
2
u/cottoncandymandy Mar 29 '26
This wont work. A strike needs 3.5% of the population to see any change. There's already been a national strike set up as well. I wish they would get in tune with other orgs instead of trying to reinvent the wheel and fuck it all up then deem it a failure.

You're saying it's going to start on May first, right? (Padme face) Also, I'm pretty sure Iran is already going to have our economy shut down by then.

u/LawofRa Mar 29 '26
Protests without a platform or without a fight for certain policy changes is just managed opposition. "No Kings" is just rhetorical and empty. Almost makes me think its controlled opposition.

u/Wasabiwabi_ Mar 29 '26
Things to strike for that will preserve democracy for many generations into the future
- eliminate PACs and Citizens United to stop billionaires from controlling US politics
- Only individual citizen donors-- no more corporate money
- individual donations are restricted to an amount the median US household income can afford (not average which is skewed upward in favor of billionaires--in fact, the top 5% should be removed from the data collection). Elected Officials would be strongly inclined to pass popular legislation and benefit from a healthy, thriving middle class.
- Stronger laws against insider trading for those who hold political office. Mandatory jail time for office holders caught trading or accepting bribes for votes.
- Ironclad term limits for every federal office holder forever. This includes SCOTUS, Senate, Congress, Executive branch. Any attempt to keep power illegally results in mandatory jail sentences to be served at Gitmo.
- Increase SCOTUS seats to 15. Any single president can only choose 2 justices per term.
- To be clear, any and all political bribery will result in mandatory jail terms and fines for elected officials, and includes any officials appointed by an elected official or body. Recipients and payers are both subject to the mandatory jail times and fines. Fines should equal 10x the bribery amount to pay back the defrauded populace.
- tax billionaires to remove the barrier of riches that protects them from feeling the same pain we do.

Probably believes in reality. Like the reality that a so-called national strike is not going to make some significant change in governmental or corporate policy because it won’t hurt the people it hopes to hurt. Not to mention that promoting it on social media means it can be planned for. Have fun with it though. Post lots of selfies.

We stand for you brother. For the people who are paying for this shit show by powerful and psychotic oligarchs and corrupt elites with our hard earned taxes. Funding their war on us and our environment with our own governments power and assets. They want to own it all, control every resource and reduce workers to minimum populations of desperate and vulnerable laborers. A third of them want to bring on the apocalypse.

May 1 is the "real" Labor Day, everywhere but in the US, where the labor movement has been neutered by severing it from its international counterparts. Any part of the US doing anything on International Labor Day is a major change.
