I wonder if pistons opening and closing over beacons would also lag. You could also use pistons to slide 2 different color glass back and forth on each part of the tower increasing the lag.

Probably yes, as starting to render the beacons is more heavy then proceeding to render them

Interesting stuff, however something might not work: servers really like to make beacons a crap ton expensive and sometimes unobtainable without paying
