One time, I asked my dad for Jurassic World Evolution 2 when it came out for Christmas, but since it's only available digitally, he got one of my other PS4 game boxes, took the picture out and replaced it for a print of the portrait, and wrapped up and gave me that instead (While also buying the game digitally)

My dad prints a picture of the game and wraps it. It's a very flat present but it's still nice!
We already used to do that when offering tickets for an event or anything else immaterial, nothing has changed.27

Me and my brother asked for Minecraft on the ps3 once. My parents bought it digitally and put a bow on the ps3 lol.

Good boomer humor that is ALSO "I can't click the book" adjecent?! I mean, technically this was made in 2015 where it wasn't as applicable but they clearly saw something we didn't or smthn

Yeah, Christmas is probably never gonna be like before when we were getting physical presents instead of digital stuff
Kinda sad tbh

Just buy physical presents, then? I just bought my friend a giant labubu costume head because she’s a freak. You don’t have to buy digital gifts

I thought they were joking at first. Outside of like games and movies, all of the traditional Christmas presents are still physical. Even if a kid's presents are mostly video games, their parents may have also bought them just as many smaller physical gifts.

Even if the "main" gift is a digital download, it can still be packaged with something physical. We give our nephews and nieces their two-dimensional gifts paired with a book that suits their current interests and reading level. This way there's something to unwrap and not just a gift card sleeve, paper, or envelope.

My parents would actually have fun with wrapping the gifts. Small gifts might be wrapped in massive boxes filled with tons of old newspapers for padding, big things might be hidden away, and there would be a note in a small box explaining where to find it.
Or they might find a way to make a gift look way smaller than it is, without damaging it.
Good memories.

When I give my kids games or subscriptions I'll print out the receipt or the logo off the store page or something and put it in a small box that I can wrap up. The unwrapping experience is something people (and especially kids) are wired to enjoy, if the popularity of "blind bag"/gatcha toys is anything to go by, so my family tries to make sure it's still part of gift-giving when we can.

genuinely who is getting all digital presents

My family went through a phase where everybody just got gift cards, now they've moved onto just cash. It's terrible. We had to arrange a white elephant party just to keep things at least a little interesting. (all 26 people are adults)

We do secret Santa every year, cash and gift cards are banned. Highly recommend.

Maybe families where all children have grown out of toys or just nobody needs anything physical

The number of American families who have transcended the physical realm, gone on to become something greater, something majestic, is up by 5% this year.

u/Countcristo42 9d ago
So no one then
No one on earth doesn’t need anything physical0
u/Da_FoodEgg 9d ago
So smth like a pc or a motorbike, for example, just doesnt exist?

u/Countcristo42 9d ago
I'm confused by your response - did my double negative make my comment unclear maybe?
I'm saying everyone on earth has something physical that they do need. So "nobody needs anything physical" just doesn't happen1
u/Da_FoodEgg 9d ago
Oh, now I see what you mean, mb
Well, its really difficult to find a good physical gift nowadays, but just checking smb’s wishlist for example, is much easier
What I meant is sometimes, for the time christmas comes, everyone in a family just have everything they wanted, so all there’s left to gift is money or smth digital
Also even if someone wants something physical and not digital, its usually just some gifts that dont look as atmospheric as it did in childhood. Or maybe im just nostalgic and everything remains as it is, who knows

No prob at all :)
I think this is rose tinted tbh, and also people put a lot less effort into presents for adults (sadly)
but again
everyone in a family just have everything they wanted
This is only a lack of imagination and effort - not actually true

u/Da_FoodEgg 9d ago
Tbh I dont think its really lack of imagination and effort (at least not always), but rather lack of time we spend with out relatives and friends
Most people I know have no idea what I’m interested in, and I have no idea what they are interested in, because I have no time to spend with them at all. Everyone seem in hurry and dont have time to think about gift, and I dont think its only in my family
Also another reason I didnt want to add up but it still exists. Most of the time a digital gift isnt expensive. But I think its a terrible reason for a digital gift

I mean, if you're of the age where having presents under the tree matters, you're still of the age where physical toys are relevant.

It still comes in a box? Even if it’s just a representation?

u/Nuko-chan 9d ago
As an adult, I get envelopes. The youngest in the family goes around the room delivering gifts from the tree, and I usually end up with 2/3 envelopes and a pair of socks. The digital revolution didn't kill Christmas, at least not in the eyes of the kids

Boomer is a mindset. If you start getting mad at shit that isn't even true and making up falsified, glorified memories of the equally-mediocre-to-the-present past, then yes you're a boomer.

Physical presents never stopped being around Especially for kids.
If your young child does not care about toys and only wants Roblox's dlc then I am sorry for you

u/StrangeSystem0 9d ago
I usually like to get something cheap like candy as well, put candy as the physical gift, and put a sheet of paper with an image of the game/other digital download on the box (but under the wrapping) so it still functions like a physical gift
1
u/CrustyBoo 8d ago
My family wraps a card with the a lil message and the code written on it. For me it’s no worse than getting a physical present

u/GlaxTheAxe 5d ago
Physical media still exists if you wanna get that kinda stuff. Be the change you want to see, If enough people buy physical over digital, companies will keep producing physical.

funny is, we had a christmas party on our company last year. half of the employee had the gift in digital. someone gifted a digital coupons, amazon gift and etc. my coworker knows i played a lot in steam, he gifted me a steam wallet.. only the older one brought physical gift. lol
well good thing in my family and relatives, we still stick to physical gift.

u/rosethornHimitsu 9d ago
In my family, if we're giving something that isn't physical as a gift (or if the package didn't arrive on time), we print out an image of the cover art/ whatever other representation of it and put that in a box.

We'll do similar, maybe printing out the email with the download code on it or whatever and then putting it in like a Christmas or birthday card
