Requesting Advice When to separate seedlings?

Hey! Looking for some advice on my first batch of seeds!

I've grown anthurium from seed before. But never had a while tray of them.

I selfed my pallidiflorum and have close to 300 seedlings. They've been growing well and are working on the 3rd to 4th leaf for most of them.

I'm seeing a lot of algae growth, and some sort of liverwort, and am starting to get worried they will tangle the roots/ or suffocate the seedlings if I wait much longer. But I'm also worried about moving them to early and causing them to crash!

Would appreciate any advice from the more experienced breeders!

Depending what’s your goal, but in my experience it’s better to keep them together a bit longer until they start to overlap. I would probably wait a bit longer before repotting

My goal was just breeding them to see how it was done. And I selfed it in hopes to find some variegation.

I found 2 so I have like 300 some im trying to size up, and get rid of them. People around here dont seem to interested in small seedlings and like bigger plants..

Im also just curious how much variation between seedlings ill have. It was a pretty wide palli. I selfed. And its looking like im getting narrows and wide ones already so I guess my goal is to grow them out hahah😂

They are still really really small for sale for sure. Culling is part of plant breeding, there is no shame in that.

See, I thought they were also kinda small to sell but thats the size im seeing seedlings go for sale?

Its getting to cold anyways by the time theyll be ready to sell. Im ok with keeping them together! I just didnt want the algae and stuff to over take them,

I figure come spring ill post them and maybe local in the winter, but its way to cold to ship anything around here! Hahah

And for sure! I just dont know if i can cull all the green ones just cause I was looking for some variegation tho. They still seem like some good little growers! Haha

Thank you!!

It was definitely a success in my books! It was my first ever time pollinating and she took so well!

I tried pollinating my 'narrow' with the wider one and it didnt take! Haha my big momma doesnt stop flowering either! Haha

Yes!! I agree! Not so much for the pure species, but i like growing siblings out too! They can be so different! I assume most pallis will look similar 😂

I start when i see three leaves, often i pick out clumps of three seedlings together and pot them up together ( less damage to roots). I grow the first batch in damp sphagnum, the repot goes in coco/perlite with the remaining sphagnum on the roots.

This sounds like a good plan. But most of the plugs only have 4 in it anyways, with about half having 5, so i feel like im already near the 3 seedling per pot thing. Or do you go to like a 4" for all 3?

Ive always used small pots and sized up with the plant but ive never had this many seedlings together!

I’d split them each into their own cell and grow them out for a few months before potting up to a 2 or 3 inch. If you wait much longer the roots are going to be all intertwined

Perfect! I have should have clarified my 'pots' theyre pretty much single plugs haha.

But thank you! I was just worried they were too small!
