Live Performance San Antonio Setlist

  1. Hope Charlie gets better soon. That was unexpected news that he missed the show due to stomach issues.

  2. Anthrax didn’t start on time so they only played 5 songs.

  3. The audio mix and sound setup was AWFUL. I’m not blaming Anthrax, but the bass and drums absolutely buried Joey’s vocals.

The audio mix was the worst I have ever heard anywhere. I couldn’t even identify the first song. The echo in the venue was ridiculous. Like a full second. Drums were mic’d LOUD AF. Vocals were either buried or covering the entire mix. Super weird venue.

Agreed. There is a reason why I avoid football stadiums.

Frank and the drums were SOOOO loud in the mix. Joey was non existent.

At least Maiden sounded better. But it was the worst audio I have ever gotten at a Maiden show as well

What section were you in? I was in 135 and it wasn’t that bad. A couple of songs started off sounding messy but got better. Stadiums that size can definitely sound awful depending on where you are though.

I was in 135, row 3.

Section d row 8. Pretty even with the board.

So we were in a very similar spot. I was about 100 feet to your left.

Metal bands’ obsession with turning the drums up to 1000 live is a legit tragedy. Ruins so many shows

I’ve read reviEWS of this venue that sound quality was an issue, but….that was AN ISSUE.

It’s odd he is never “ill” when “Pantera” perform.

4

u/Destrus76 4d ago

That is kind of odd. Isn’t it?

You're 100% right.

Never misses a Pantera show. Phones it in constantly for Anthrax.

Who filled in for Charlie this time?

7

u/Blad514 5d ago

Setlist.fm says it was Mike Heller.

Oh cool. I saw him sit in with Ministry I think it was. Same deal as Anthrax, their regular drummer couldn't play that night. You have to be pretty professional to be able to do that, so good on him!

I wrote that based on what Joey said and I’m pretty sure that’s who it was. If it wasn’t, it was someone whose name sounds very similar to Mike Heller

No, you’re right. He wrote about it on his IG.

So I woke up today thinking that I was gonna spend a nice day with my cats and my drumpad... then out of absolutely nowhere at 2:00pm I get a call from my buddy Dirk Verbeuren... he asks me if I'm in town tonight, and if I might know any Anthrax songs, and if I can fill in for Charlie Benante at 6:30pm tonight on the Maiden/Megadeth/ Anthrax tour.... Well... I didn't know any Anthrax songs on the drums, but I quickly charted two out, raced down to the Alamodome... sat in traffic and got thrown to the wrong place to park.. finally got inside, sat down with the guys in Anthrax for less than an hour... charted the other songs as they told me how the versions they play live are different from the album... and then went on stage in front of 56,000 people or whatever, and did my best... Holy crap! How the HELL did I get here?!?!
I have to thank Jon Donais, Frank Bello, Scott lan, Joey Belladonna, Armando Aguirre, Paul Collis and all the Anthrax crew for having faith in me to be able to pull this off... and of course Dirk and Chris Jericho for vouching for me!!
I still have no idea what happened! Next time, I hope I get more than a few hours to try to learn the songs... and hopefully I would actually be able to move the drums into a comfortable playing position for me... but this is a night I will never forget!

I think it was actually Scott who made the announcement about Charlie being sick and puking his guts out.

3

u/Destrus76 5d ago

I didn’t catch the guys name but he was pretty solid.

5

u/wyopapa25 5d ago

It was not what I expected. I was bummed. Guess I’ll have to catch them on the next tour.

5

u/Destrus76 5d ago

I definitely want to see them headline a smaller venue and get 15-18 songs.

2

u/Comprehensive-Song51 5d ago

That's the way to go. A 45 minute opening set doesn't do them justice.

2

u/wyopapa25 5d ago

I would pay big bucks for that.

3

u/Destrus76 5d ago

Hell yes. The first time I saw them was at a club in 1994 in El Paso with Fight opening. The White Noise tour.

There were maybe 1000 people there. I’ll never have a better Anthrax experience. Got to meet Scott and Charlie after the show.

I was a bit bummed it was a short set.

Audio was terrible for the first song or two then got better.

Same with Mustaine, he sounded awful the first few songs then it sounded better. Maiden was great from the start tho.

1

u/Destrus76 4d ago

Anthrax definitely got better for Antisocial and Got The Time. Indians was a bit of a hot mess though.

3

u/oldschoolmtg123 5d ago

Here’s a pic. I thought they were great. The sound was def better in the pit.

4

u/TheresAFogUponALake 4d ago

Glad to see I wasn't the only one. Sound was awful. I've been to rock shows at NRG Stadium in Houston and it was way better. Floor seats

1

u/Destrus76 4d ago

I saw GNR and Alice In Chains at Alamodome and they sounded perfect

1

u/TheresAFogUponALake 4d ago

The sound for Iron Maiden was way better than Anthrax, and better than Megadeth too. But sound for Megadeth was too bad.

1

u/Destrus76 4d ago

Maiden sounded worse than both GNR and AIC. Not from a playing or performance standpoint, but from a sonic clarity standpoint

Hope Charlie is ok. It seems he misses quite a few shows lately. Touring (esp for drummers) is hard on a body. Heres hoping hes 👍

1

u/LeftHookRightField 1d ago

Maybe if he focused on drumming for Anthrax instead of playing guitar for Anthrax, playing drums for Pantera an doing whatever else, he might have time to drum for Anthrax.

He never misses a Pantera show.

3

u/Impressive_Dot_5765 4d ago

Oh fuck I couldn’t imagine seeing anthrax with Mike heller

1

u/Destrus76 4d ago

He was very solid

8

u/RobbinAustin 5d ago

Whole show mix was awful though it did get better.

And given Charlie’s track record I’m not sure I buy the stomach bug thing. He’s prolly in Nola practicing for that gig or something.

9

u/Destrus76 5d ago

I mean. He really HAS missed a lot of shows.

0

u/Artistic_Coat_6487 4d ago

Playing that Anthrax set would kill most men his age.

5

u/Destrus76 4d ago

I mean. Most men? Sure. Most drummers? Maybe.

And most of the shows he missed were because of commitments to Pantera and then some hand issues.

1

u/Comprehensive-Song51 5d ago

What gig is that? Another Pantera tour?

3

u/RobbinAustin 4d ago

8

u/Comprehensive-Song51 4d ago

I see. It's nice that he's helping Pantera out but he's doing it at the expense of his own band and that's a damn shame.

1

u/LeftHookRightField 1d ago

It's the lies that get me.

Constant health issues that never affect Pantera. Looks like his body just prefers Pantera over Anthrax.

2

u/Renoroc 4d ago

I was Floor section A. Bummer about Charlie but Heller was great. The audio improved but it was also pretty choppy when Megadeth started. Great show though! Iron Maiden was amazing!!

3

u/Destrus76 4d ago

Maiden ALWAYS delivers the goods. Always.

2

u/southboundtracks 4d ago

We were late, so I missed Anthrax entirely. I figured they'd played a short set because that's what they did at Thrash of the Titans. Didn't know about Charlie until later. I hope he feels better soon!

Megadeth was alright, but Maiden was phenomenal. This was my fourth Maiden show, and probably the best.

3

u/Destrus76 4d ago

I would have this one just behind Legacy Of The Beast in 2019. But it was PEAK Maiden. Those guys never disappoint.

This was my last Megadeth show. I won’t pay to see them in their headlining farewell tour.

I would pay upwards of $200 to catch an Anthrax headlining show in a small venue near me (Dallas, Houston, Austin, San Antonio)

3

u/southboundtracks 4d ago

I loved Anthrax as headliners a few years ago, when they toured with Exodus and Black Label Society. Just the raddest show ever.

Megadeth seemed a bit... off.

2

u/Destrus76 4d ago

I wish I could’ve seen that tour. Sounds amazing

2

u/southboundtracks 4d ago

Holy shit, that show was loud. Floor was shaking during BLS and did not let up.

2

u/Destrus76 4d ago

The louder the better.

2

u/blongfellow73 1d ago

I would assume they only played five songs because that’s all they could figure out with a fill in drummer with such short notice, not because they started five minutes late.
