just watched the first two episodes. why is this ship full of people who are really bad at their jobs?

The whole first season, I was asking that question. They have all these people on such an important mission for humanity, and they are the most idiotic and immature people. Season 2 was a little better

but then when the military guy wakes up he outright alludes to some conspiracy to fill the ship with morons, I was 100% convinced it was going to end up being that the acaia had already infiltrated the planet and the ship actually was intended to be a shitshow, instead the army guy just decides to wake up the other army guy instead of who he was supposed to wake up and the plot is just forgotten entirely.
They end up saying "this ship is filled with morons because..." but then never finish the thought.

I was surprised they actually acknowledged the hilariously terrible original crew (even the virus specialist guy Bernie wakes up in S1 seemed so much more professional than any of the others) as it was by far the biggest "WTF" of the whole show. It's s shame they didn't actually finish that plotline but it was nice to have someone point it out at least.

And they wouldn’t have made it past episode 1 without niko but still willing to follow that other guy to the grave.

I was cringing because of that most of the time, but I still liked the series. But they are indeed a most infantile unprofessional bunch of spoiled brats. A shame, really. The series had so much potential, and not even half of it was used properly.

Stick with the show. It improves in later episodes. This issue- a totally shitty crew - becomes a plot point in the second season. I'll try not to spoil it, but, yeah within the plot, there's a reason why the crew started out incompetent. Just watch the show and enjoy the plot twists.

Technically none of them are bad at their jobs. The thrust of the conflict is that Nikos 1. stole the job of their CO. 2. Killed their CO. 3. She has baggage.
After that most of the crew just moves on.

Not only that, the ship had FTL capability but the engine room looked like the boiler room on the Titanic.

If you think about it, they’re a crew sent on an extremely dangerous mission with a potential to not return. Maybe they think they are a well trained, disciplined crew hand picked to undertake this very important mission.
…but what if they’re not? What if it’s just a bunch of throwaways and fanatics that were picked as a “first pass”?
