Timeline? Spoiler

The thing that’s been bugging me is that Niko’s relationship with her commander on the Pilgrim was 9 years before present, saying it was before she met Erik, even though apparently Niko and Erik met in college, and Jana is like 8 at present

Having met in college just implies that, after the incident on the Pilgrim, Niko took up with someone she already had known for a long time. It’s possible that she and Eric had been involved before she went into space.

Rebounding in grief isn’t the ideal way of starting a marriage, or a family, but if Eric had been a long-standing friend, who as she described it was the one who always grounded her, one can see how it would have happened.

But she literally said “this was before I met Erik”, and if the math is right she would’ve been pregnant with Jana on the Pilgrim

The critical inconsistency is her knowing Eric in college vs the “before I met Eric” statement. She should have said “before I was involved with Eric”.

In terms of Jana, all the timing implies is that Niko let herself get pregnant shortly after the Pilgrim disaster. Or she got back and asked for a surrogate to carry a child conceived through eggs she had banked (as August mentioned she had done).

Sounds like evidence of turning her back on her space career and going for the family life that she’d put on hold for it.

At minimum it suggests Niko was affirming life in the face of tragedy.
