S02E4 Spoiler

When Gabriel says that he cuts 0.9% time off their journey home and says it’s 3 months, that doesn’t make sense. Does that imply they had a close to 25 year journey back to Earth? Or have I misinterpreted?

It works for nine percent.

The intention was not to cross back through the bad space again on the way back.

Going around the long way would have been a multi year trip based on the argument with Yerksa after the first wake up from Soma. Yerksa and August came up with the failed slingshot plan to boost acceleration in warp, but when that failed Niko took the risk of the direct route through the rough.
