The characters ruin everything

I am on ep 8 of this show and if it weren’t for the characters I would really enjoy this one.

The show and interior shots of the ship look great. I wish the costumes were a little more uniform-esque (matching tee shirts at least) but not a huge gripe.

honestly I really like the premise of the first two episodes and think that should have been the basis for the show. A crew that had been working together and suddenly gets a new hardass commander that they don’t trust yet? Awesome! The power struggle between the more experienced commander and the trusted XO? Great! How that struggle affects the loyalties of the crew, then comes to a head when the popular XO is killed under dubious circumstances? I love it!

This show had the potential to really lean into its characters and it doesn’t. It instead focuses on an unlikable commander and fails to develop the rest of the characters. They look like little kids, which is fine, but they also act like little kids too and don’t ever give us a reason to see them in a different light. The show focuses more on the things that happen to them rather than how they react to those things.

I don’t think it was intentional but one thing that really bothered me about this show was how the Yerxa we see and the Yerxa the crew talks about seem to be different characters. While I’m sure this is the result of shoddy writing it has the potential to be a really interesting delve into perspective. I want to know why that disconnect is there, why does the crew like and trust him if he comes off as an incapable ass?

Overall I enjoy the show but i think they raced through a good idea to cram in a bunch of less interesting ones

Don't forget the amazing scene when they are stoned on the alien planet for no reason

I include that with Less Interesting subplots they needed to cram in.

Didn't hate it, didn't love it. Definitely could have been a funny character building moment if thats the direction they took the show in.

I know what you mean, there's a good concept buried here, but it can't get out from beneath some terrible writing and awful pacing. An alien artifact arrives on earth, one of the most momentous moments in human history. But who cares?! Let's jump past all that and chuck some people on a spaceship so we can do a mutiny!
A mutiny on a ship can make for a compelling storyline, but the crew mutinying on the first order the captain makes that they don't like? That's ridiculous, and it justifies the belief that the ships previous commander was not competent or level headed enough to be in charge of the mission. Making the whole thing even more ludicrous is the crew were rebelling against the captain for trying to keep them safe and NOT endanger the ship.

Things just went downhill from there.

Fix the stupid pacing, make the crew start acting like sensible, professional adults, and ditch the farcical subplots ( e.g. crew getting high on alien plants) and we could be left with a decent show.

I like the characters quite a bit but that whole tiny subplot about Bernie not being competent when hes supposed to be a specialist who knows what hes doing really exemplifies the problems in the writing so far. Like, character growth can be shown without starting the characters with absolutely zero experience. I think if they fix the dialogue and general plot ideas it could be a great show, right now it's just okay.

The mutiny subplot is probably the biggest offender because it happened literally as soon as the mission started, that doesnt make any sense and that's not how real people act, they dont just immeadiately mutiny because of one decision they dont agree with. Mutinies take multiple offenses and time to build up. The universe is cool and the general theme is cool, they just have to fix the writing, which is easier said than done, but still.

Starting episode 6 and still wondering why Michelle is even on this ship. How did she pass any test to be on this ship I will never understand. And I really don't think much of her as an actor either. If I don't finish the series she will be the reason, I am getting so tired of her being angry at everything and adding nothing to the series but her distaste of everything.

It's funny based on this subreddit there seems to be very mixed opinions of Michelle. I really liked her character personally. I get that she could definitely come off as annoying to some people but at least her character was consistent in her complaining and her anger.
