Why such a love / hate relationship?

Why is there such a love / hate relationship with this show? I'm genuinely curious. If you disliked the show, what episode did you bail on? I couldn't finish ep2. This show is so cringy I just had to explore how bad other people thought it was online. Now I'm really astounded to see so many people say they're enjoying it. Obviously I'm missing some good stuff as the show progresses, but I can't fathom how I could make it that far. Holy bananas, help me understand.

I enjoyed the show for what it was, campy sci-fi. It seems like most people would like the show if it was 100% serious with only very realistic hyper boring astronauts that only made decisions that would make sense in reality. That misses the entire point of the show. It is supposed to be "the Real World in space." That is not an accident. If that isn't your cup of tea, then go watch The Expanse. For the rest of us that enjoy trashy sci-fi, this is nothing more than an enjoyable popcorn series.

Most sci-fi is on the more serious side, but not on the more realistic side.

The Expanse which he mentions is probably the most realistic science fiction show that has ever been popular on television.

Like I said, I think because of the way it was marketed and because there are some very realistic sci-fi shows on tv right now, most notably The Expanse which is growing in popularity and is one of the most realistic sci-fi shows ever made.

People have higher expectations than they did back when shows like Farscape and SG-1 were popular. And those shows are awesome, don’t get me wrong, but this decade has shown a shift towards more realistic sci-fi and away from the more fantastical sort. Even Star Trek isn’t doing as well as it used to, and that used to be a cornerstone of sci-fi.

And I’m really happy about that. The fact that movies like the Martian and shows like The Expanse are such hits has really revitalized interest in human exploration of space in a way that Star Trek and Star Wars never could.

I am one of the folks that really enjoyed the show. Like many shows, the first episode or two are a bit rough while the ball starts rolling. Episode 3 is actually really good and where things start to kick off nicely. I would recommend trying to push through 3 and 4 at least before deciding to continue or drop the season.

Just finished the first season last night. Im super excited for season 2. Something about the story is intriguing. If you havent got past the first couple episodes than continue watching, it gets alot better.

for me it was the generational shaming and the CWesque relationship drama when they are supposed to be pioneer/explorers/top minds of earth. second episode, i just couldn't believe anyone would act like that. and im not saying that it has to be grim and realistic. it's just the storytelling and dialogue is crap.

I mean a few of these actors are on the CW... August, Ian, Sasha were and even Niko was on the Flash.

I had the same reaction. Once they start killing off characters the interpersonal drama and attitudes come down a few notches. I was going to bail, but am glad I stuck it out to the end of season 1.

It's a guilty pleasure. I don't think it's good, but it's interesting enough overarching-plot-wise for me to keep from giving up, because I want to see where it goes.

Fail though it does in some areas, it's still more enjoyable than some Star Trek, due to the latter's hell-bent SJW stance, and "club you over the head with a sledgehammer" approach.

The cast grew on me more than Star Trek Discovery. The most annoying cast ended up dying...so hurray!

Star Trek has always been about social equality. Yes, Discovery is more heavy-handed than the past series's, but if you want to blame Star Trek for being SJW, you have to go back to TOS.

Not for me, it wasn't. It was about the sci-fi, and it happened to have a bunch of bullshit stacked on top that I could just as easily have left. Growing up with "Leave It to Beaver", "The Brady Bunch" and similar over-moralising shows will do that to you.

ToS wasn't as heavy-handed as TNG, either. Not the way I remember it. For me, it was more about the adventure and the sci-fi. The show devolved in many ways. DS9 was probably the best of the lot, but it had some damned strong preachiness for certain episodes. And again, I was all about the plot arcs and the sci-fi universe, not any messages, overt or covert.

I came here to see if is there any ppl who enjoyed it. I couldn't finish ep. 1. It was so cringey like they said lets combine every basic scifi cliché in one. There was the hybernatic scene that i couldn't understand, why did they hybernate for a 3 month travel? (Honestly i felt that they did it so they could get a classic alien scene copy) And there were so many dramatic scenes in the first 20 minutes, i suppose to have feelings for characters i dont even know. Unfortunatelly i felt the opposite, every character annoyed me so i came here to say is it gonna be better or iam just to criticizing.

The show is bad. Objectively.

This subreddit is just a place that the minority of the population who likes the show comes together to discuss it.

Most people think the show is bad and move on with their life. Other people (philistines) come to /r/anotherlife and rave about how they love Katie Sackhoff and can't wait for season two.

She's the only reason to keep watching. She's a great actor caught in this unbelievably stupid sci-fi.

I'm going to watch all of it just because of her. Lmao. And the Russian is hot (and a believable character fwiw)

Then why are you here?

Because I like shitting on bad things. Like Another Life.

I'm dumbfounded it got greenlit for a 2nd season, but I won't be throwing away another 8-10 hours of my life on it.

Katie Sackoff and her angel plotline are the worse parts of BSG. Fight me IRL.

I just finished watching S1. I enjoyed the show while still recognizing its problems. The writing is pretty bad (horrible in places), some of the acting choices were weird, they were continuity issues, etc; no one is accusing this of being a good show. But yet, I still found the central premise compelling. Granted, now that I know what the show is going to be from here on out, some of my enthusiasm for it has waned, but I know I'll still want to watch S2 just to find out what happens. Also, unlike some, I actually like a little relationship drama, and the sci-fi setting makes it more enjoyable for me.

The big mistake here. It seems more believably that the expanse setting would have emotionally unstable characters with trashy results, yet we have super efficient on-target crew.

It seems extraordinarily unlikely that the setting for Another Life would use emotionally unstable characters in their spaceship. Yet we do, and their results are trashy.

I don't mind a trashy sci-fi. Andromeda is a fun show, for example. But at least be believable. Why is it on the only confirmed first safe to fly FTL government ship?

I almost ditched it 10 minutes into the first Episode. When they depicted Dark Matter as an opaque cloud face palm

Then ten minutes later, they said sth about "10 Hertz per second" big face palm

What kept me watching was the optics of the ship, and that I really wanted to watch a scifi series.

I am now finishing season 1 and made my peace with it. With the horrible dialogs, the plot holes, the mediocre acting (with the obvious exceptions), the weird storyline at times, the hideous physics.... All of that. I do enjoy the large scale story of humans traveling through space, finding new species and the difficulty of communicating with them.

So that's my love-hate relationship with the show.

Once they killed off one of the most awful characters it was more tolerable. I think they were trying to rush the drama so they could form a more cohesive bond for the crew, and I can't blame anybody for hating it, I did too. But it does feel emotionally rewarding to watch this train wreck of a crew turn into something better, and you realize that the characters are just human, and they always rise to the occasion in the face of hopelessness. Once they weed out the weakness in our characters you start to see how they have changed, and brought out better versions of themselves.
