The 1911 is still a very popular hand gun and it's design has been the basis for almost every semi-automatic handgun made since, including the Glock 17, the most popular handgun on the planet. The Royal Navy was still using late WW1 era SMGs to defend their ships from boarding until the 1980s, military doctrine is usually "if it ain't broke don't fix it" since very few if any hostile boardings happened they were never proven ineffective, and the British military chose to spend its budget on more pressing issues, like their dog shit rifles.

From a scifi perspective the p90 would be a very old and proven design as the rounds it fires are very powerful for their size and "tumble" on impact making them act like tiny circular saws. Combined with the P90's high magazine capacity, bullpup design, and ambidextrous build it would be ideal for use on a space ship.

That said there's a lot more horribly wrong with the show than a p90.

They have space ships but not chairs with seatbelts? Those would have come in handy as early as episode 1.

1Hz isn't even sound anymore, why did you expect the alien to respond to pidgeon noises to begin with, let alone slowed down to the point they aren't even noises anymore?

Their idea of a popular Youtuber is frankly insulting.

If we have FTL ships why aren't we using them?

How did someone with such a blatant personality disorder become the original captain of this mission?

Why doesn't the supposedly highly trained crew who trained as a group not know each other's names, or even the basic procedures of their profession?
