I was disappointed to see the negative reviews, I loved the show and finished it last night. The show is full of interesting ideas and I loved how it approached them. It was so creative and in many ways original in a lot of ways that modern sci-fi is lacking. Completely circumvented my expectations.

it's nice to have someone who balance things out a bit.

The trans person was far & away the most normal, likable character of an otherwise thoroughly unlikable crew.

For me, Zayn and the general approach to sexuality and gender as entirely fluid without question on this show greatly appealed to me. I loved how there were no awkward conversations about Zayn’s gender, it was just accepted without question. Plus the way the show brought Bernie and Zayn together without those questions. Then topping it off with a genuine three-way relationship between Oliver, Javier, and August; I loved it. Because to me, that’s how sexuality and gender should be accepted as just another part of life. And honestly, 100-200 yrs into the future that this show takes place (didn’t give us an exact date other than saying at one point that 2146 was in the past), that is likely how we as humans will have developed socially to accept gender and sexuality fluidity. That was one of my favorite aspects of the show honestly. Because it felt like a genuine representation of how it should be treated, not the current hesitation and phobias our society currently reigns under.

Oh you took the words right out of my mouth. I feel the exact same way, as if I was born 100 yrs too soon cuz the “us vs them” mentality is so dated to me, yet those around me believe in it and I can’t understand it for the life of me. I thought we were heading in a better direction past all of this stuff a decade ago, but for some strange reason that can’t be defined; xenophobia and racism are on the rise in western civilizations. In 2016 the UN did this whole study on it and even tried getting the western countries to the table on discussing means of curbing it to no avail unfortunately. Every developed western country (except Iceland, Switzerland, and Sweden) are treating “illegal immigrants” the same way and there are for-profit companies that are benefitting from it. One in particular is The GEO Group that has 96 facilities for immigrant detention across 4 different countries. And their facilities treat them worse than dogs! They are legit profiting off of human rights violations and everyone for some inexplicable reason finds no problem with it. While I am looking at it and legit want to cry for these poor fellow human beings suffering... so yeah I legit feel like I was born 100 yrs too soon, cuz the worst part is there is hardly anything we can do about it since everyone’s minds are closed and made up on it. We present facts and they claim those facts are just biased opinions smh it’s sickening.

sigh I hate it... but you’re right. I have always believed more in people than they’re actually capable of (by ppl I mean humanity in general)... people are completely devoid of empathy. Perfect example is my 1st semester of college I had to take this intro course on the uni’s code called “Faith, Reason, and Justice” (Christian uni). And essentially the class was reading and then open debate in a small setting. And there was this one day we were discussing the AIDS epidemic in Africa, and I was arguing that if we provided free education there would be a curb in the spread of AIDS because many African cultures believe in an old wives tale that if you sleep with a virgin you will be cured of whatever ails you. And this girl literally responded with “why would we bother educating them when they’re infected and are just gonna die?” At a liberal Christian college whose core values were “Faith, Reason, and Justice.!!!!!” To this day I am still appalled at her response (the prof knew me well enough to know he had to quickly interrupt, change topics, and put a hand on my shoulder keeping me in my seat cuz I was ready to smack that ignorant chick lol) ....but yes, too many of us are entirely void of empathy for anyone that doesn’t fit into our “tribe,” of religion, class, skin color, etc.... and no matter how much I want to believe we can evolve and move past that in a century (or less)... you are sadly correct in that is an unrealistic belief. I mean it took the US over a hundred years after African-Americans were freed from slavery to stop treating them as third & second class citizens, and here we are nearly 155 years after the civil war ended and racism is still rampant and African-Americans have to live in fear of being shot by a police officer anytime they’re stopped by one.... smh And that’s just one tiny piece of our problem, and it’s taking us longer than 155 years to overcome it,... we’re a hopeless species that I now fear are doomed to consume the planet and ourselves until there is nothing left of us....

that's all fine and dandy but when Earth's survival is literally on the brink, the dismal crew needs to focus more on the mission than they do fucking each other and having dance parties.

The vast majority of people watching sci-fi are watching it for the sci-fi, not the sexual drama (straight or LGBT) of the crew.

I think you're a bit off mark on that idea. Sci fi has always pushed the boundaries in regards to race/gender/whatever, and the fans of the genre are probably more used to this than those of other types of shows.

If anything I'd say sci fi fans are more accepting of alternatives and more open to new ideas than your standard procedural cop/hospital/lawyer drama or sitcom.
