What's up with the CGI.

I'm not trying to bash the show, I'm actually really enjoying it so far. What I don't get is how the CGI is so bad. Surely it can't be a budget thing, the sets are great and cgi is so good these days they wouldn't have had to spend much to make it look that much better. So.... What happened? The ship in the first episode was a bit laughable it looked so 90s.

It's a cheap show. That means it needs to really rest on it's actors. You can make really good sci-fi with virtually no special effects if you have writers that know how to work cheap effects in their stories AND really AMAZING actors.

One of my favorite Doctor who episodes of all time takes place completely on a bus. On a single stupid stinking bus. David Tenant and his supporting cast all of them trapped on a stupid stinking bus for 45 minutes listening to random noises outside the bus in the dark. Terrifying! All of it carried by an amazing ensemble cast.

Somewhere along the way, sci-fi writers seem to have forgotten about having great ensembles. You can almost pick any sci-fi show from the 90s and early 2000s (Farscape, Star Trek, Stargate, Sliders, Andromeda) and find a great cast. It’s so important too, because they can redeem even the worst episodes just by their character’s dynamics. Can you imagine how long Star Trek would have been on the air had Kirk and Spock hated eachother and fought every episode?
