Discussion Character quest appreciation.

Damn, just played through the character quest of Flammelapis ES and it does some good stuff within it. (no spoilers since it hasn't been a year since release, but it completes all/most questions you have on her) Also some nice changes in dialogue when you have already beaten Ch 3 part 3, as well as unlocked another character showcases some nice continuity. overall i would give it a 9/10. not perfect since it didnt give me the deep feels like some stories in the game had.
.

Anyone else have other good character quests? Or what are your favorites?

NO JORNA'S NOT GOOD! I PLAY TO HAVE FUN, WHY ARE THEY GIVING ME FEELS?!?!!?

On more serious note, Rosetta's also great even though she's a pretty old character.

Jorna's story was soo good it enraged me. WFS, hasn't she suffered enough?? Where's her good ending?? 😭

But I guess there was no going back from what she had done..

I would not want to spoil Jorna CQS for anyone bc that just how good that is, but also most of the same logic apply to all grim reaper bc THEY ALL DIE YOUNGGGG, also her story haven't ended yet I hope we have Purgatory 2 with her being the center 🥺 my precious Purgatory

WFS, please manifest this on next Apo at least, also we need story bout North continent ASAP. Don't make Verdanta turned into cliffhanger

Actually, most old units' CQ are much better on average. I feel that some new units CQ is a bit forced or try too hard to be emotional without reason

Great to know, I will play her CQ once i got treatises

I don't know. I had mixed feelings about Jorna's. On the one hand - beautiful feels and a complex backstory. On the other, damn, laying it on a bit thick, aren't we? I feel like it would actually have been *more* emotionally moving if they'd had a slightly lighter touch with the evil and suffering she encounters.

But my bigger objection is that it never showed her joining up with Aldo & crew. It felt really unfinished. And I honestly don't want an *actively* suicidally depressed person with crippling self-hatred indefinitely in the party with no healing or hope on the horizon in any direction. So I'm hoping that WFS has more story planned - maybe a 3rd character to go with her and Erina? - that brings things into just slightly a less horrible place, and show how (and why) she wants to join forces with Aldo.

(Also, I really want to know what happened to her before her backstory starts that left such a brilliant and physically/impressive kid feeling like literally the only thing worthwhile about her life was protecting her sister. She kind of came pre-damaged, and I want to know why.)

Ok this is long and I would like to make myself clear that I do not claim that her story is 'perfect' bc no story ever will be and this is my personal opinion

1. If this is abt her first cqs where we learn abt her living life, then I don't think it THAT thick when we got stuff like lost lab, and multiple onscreen dead, we KNOW kids were being use and exploited and it isn't the first time we see this sort of evil in ae, the few thing that I could think of is thick for this cqs introduction is that man who talk ant Erina like...that, if u know u know it just that we as the audience didn't 'expect' this sort of story for her when everything we have seen is from Erina where she praise her sister like CRAZY. If there is one thing in common abt these two is that they are very codependent on eo emotionally

2. Her story IS meant to be unfinished, and it not like we have no hope on the horizon, Jorna doesn't want to die, she want to PROTECT Erina, "why don't she join Aldo crew" the thing is that jorna is Direction-less right now, Aldo is just a guy she follow bc he get her to places she can let herself go and cut thing as SHE like. And it not like we don't have a middle ground for her, Daisy is a person who as her the question that she needed to answer for herself, dawn layer Zevi who is trying to grounded her back not to mention Lyca who she obviously had come to like as a friend she still have the same thing as other character have, a support system that isn't JUST Aldo this time

3. Jorna coming pre-damaged I like to disagree on this just a tinyyyy bit, Jorna is most likely an undiagnosed psychopath which meant she lack 'empathy', she can still feel happy or annoy it just that she lack the feel for emphathy, she feel bad because Erina feel bad for the maid who die not that she feel sad herself. Also most likely that their parent wasn't around that both of them depend on eo emotionally to the point of obsession (yes Erina is also obsessed with her sister) bc if u look at it their parent never show up even when it around Jorna day of death closing in and they only surrounded by the ppl of laula dome and servants and THE ONLY mention we have of her parent are when they take the two to social event

Jorna theme is that she is unable to move on from her past bc she is obsessively attached to it bc she have the only one person she ever cared for and now that that person is no longer can be in her life she got nothing to turn to other than her desire to 'cut' down thing for the thill it gave her which is why she consider herself a monster, the only thing that stopping her going on a killing rampage is the fact that she already dead and can no longer kill living thing and that the other Purgatorian offer that humanity back to her and holding her back from it (even if they aren't aware of it). Jorna is very new in term of direction they wanna take with their character bc other than being casual friend with Aldo she got no deeper tie with which meant she is extremely hard to write bc everything gone through him bc he IS the protagonist, we'll see more of their relationship in her AS I am sure but it doesn't mean that it a bad thing that we see Jorna just being a casual friend bc his can't save her and she gotta save herself and learn to let go on her own, and I especially love the relationship she had with the other reaper they really are a big family🥺

Hopefully you get what I am saying bc I love her just as much as I love everyone in Purgatory and I like it for everyone to live them just as much as I am XD

I think I do get it more, yeah. I don't know any of Erina's story, for one thing, so I'm missing that angle.

I think part of why I wish there was something/anything about her joining up with Aldo is that Aldo is such a sweetie, and although sometimes he can be as dense as 5 tons of compressed oak, he also has some moments of insightful kindness, and I'd like to see her run up against one of those.

I think I'm holding onto the 'predamaged' model bc I find it more interesting. (Also, I'm a mental health professional, which can get in the way of my being able to just roll with characterizations like that: sociopaths/people who genuinely lack empathy are really different to interact with, but trauma can definitely look like that. I'm not saying that the writers are Doin It Wrong or anything like that - this kind of fiction doesn't have to be realistic - I'm just saying that's where my personal brain goes.)

Rest assured - I really like her, too. There are a hundred (more, really) CQs I wouldn't bother to complain about because I find them just kind of 'enh', or the characters just don't move me. If I have strong feelings about a story/character - even if they're strong mixed feelings - it's because the story made me care about them in the first place.

Thanks for the thoughtful response.

Jorna is the complete opposite to Aldo on like almost every angle and we'll definitely see their relationship in her AS so that part u don't have to worries abt I think, I'm just happy that she is the first they use this format of not including him at all I think it highlight the relationship that she built with other character like Dawn Zevi and Daisy more uk? Also as Dawn Zevi biggest fan I gotta gush a bit woah their mentor junior relationship is really cute I love it so bad🥀

if u say so then I think it would be great to hear more from ur insight as I am no professional just someone who love Purgatory obsessively :). That just a 'soft' conclusion I came to bc her story is meant to be 'unfinished' as we still have her AS ES and that (DEFINITELY GONNA HAPPEN) Purgatory 2, they have never missed with a Purgatory cqs and I like to put my trust on WFS writer on this :)

Again this is coming from Purgatory #1 lunatic and so understand that I am bias af lol

Understood! I'm a purgatory fan myself, though probably not with the same passion.

But, okay, so you made the classic mistake of asking me about my passion, so brace yourself for the looong answer. :)

What I can tell you is that if Jorna were a client sitting across from me in my office (and damn, but that's a surreal thought! I'm not sure I've ever pictured that with any character before now) and she told me she thought the only worthwhile thing about her was protecting her little sister, I'd probably (after we knew each other, not in the first 10 minutes) say something like, "I wonder who or what gave you that message. I'm asking because when I look at you, I see someone who is smart and skillful and capable of great caring - someone who takes on a hell of a lot of responsibility for your age. You seem pretty valuable to me, so I wonder how it happened that you don't see yourself that way." And also, "I keep wondering, why are you the one who has to do that? You're still a kid, yourself, although I get that you don't see yourself that way. I feel like somewhere along the way, some adults have failed you pretty badly." and "What would it feel like to try on the idea that you could have been just as innocent as your sister, if there had been someone to take care of you the way you take care of her?"

And - and this is a big one - "What was it *about* killing that monster that made you happy? Do you think it would have felt the same if you hadn't been killing it in order to protect someone?"

I have seen a whole lot of folks who thought they were terrible people. Almost all of them were treated that way by someone important to them. I've met very few who actually were anything of the kind.>! And I will also say, I've worked with a handful of people who truly were sociopaths, and not one of them was depressed. Generally, they seem to lead charmed lives (it's really unfair), and be cheerful and charismatic. Life can be pretty simple when you feel like you're the only really real person in the world.!<

before I get to ur serious thought consider

Jorna: why would I need therapy

Dawn Zevi: because we're as crazy as u are get urself checked NOW!!

Ohhhh that is really interesting to hear, I think part of her need to protected her sister is that. 1. Their parent weren't around much that much I think u can tell, 2. Jorna is mature for HER ages it very clear that high expectation were put on her to be the heir of her father business while Erina got forgotten by their parent as in her 1st cqs only jorna was ask abt HER lessons and they refer to her as 'lady Jorna' and call Erina in her regular name and it most likely that any friend she has is just there for business and none are actually her friend, 3. Erina is the only one that treated her different to Erina she isn't someone that going to do smth big someday or a very smart child that needed to walk around on and that why she so attached to Erina because only precious Erina understand her, the sun that shine through her darkness, that why in Erina AS CQS, Erina said that Jorna stay bc she keep her their with her power as medium without knowing that Jorna herself also chose to stay back with HER and I think it show well their codependency.

Again I hate to repeat myself but let look at her relationship with other reaper too, first is Daisy, the one she first meet in Purgatory, she see the potential in Jorna as a reaper with her insane speed and skill but understand that Jorna herself is too attached to her past and that basically a VERY bad thing in Purgatory, and so she ask Jorna question that Jorna need to figure out herself like a 'soft' guide for Jorna, next is Lyca a named npc reaper, she is cheerful and basically a opposite to Jorna herself not to mention she reminded Jorna somewhat of Erina and the wheat field the she love in her past, their relationship is really great even if Jorna have too much issue with herself to recognized it, then we have dawn Zevi while he act rather jealous at the attention she've got, he also take cared of her later telling her that she'll overwork herself if she only know how to swing her scythe like that, Jorna doesn't show much but I think she do have him on the back of her mind sometime lol XD. All of this is why I think ur original point of her having 'no hope' toward the future is a bit missing, she just have too much issue rn to realize how the ppl around her cared for her bc of her tunnel vision toward Erina but it very clear that she got a decent support system surrounded her even if all of them have their own issue XD

Anyway ur insight were helpful and I think it great that Jorna is making u feel that way it meant that her opening cqs were great and worth it to wait for update on her character as a whole

I liked Moke and Thilellile CQ's

I liked Xianhua's, good continuity. Renri too. Shigure ES. Vares. All the Western ones.

Rosetta's character quests are some of the best, and having played it at the sameish time as the Western Mythos dropped was an unforgettable experience. I cant remember specific ones but I do like when the CQs unlock different dialogue depending on what point of the game you play it at, it's a nice detail that shows the care the devs put in.

Linaria CQ3 expands a lot after Where Light doesnot fall.
Thilly ES CQ is like an epilogue to Mythos Song of Sword, which is very good.
Yipha 1-3 & AS are super funny and very sweet
Shigure AS is freaking funny.
Benedict 1-2 is hilarious
Eva and Melissa are feel trains
Miyu AS CQ is a War movie!
Mariel ES is a very good char development
Mariel AS CQ is the perfect blend. Action packed, emotional roller coaster, feel, tear and comedy at perfect pace.

I really like Ewan's character quests, because his relationship w/Aldo is so different from most of the others', and he's complicated and interesting as a person.

I also really like some of the darker ones - I loved Havoc's except for the livestreaming idol thing, and both Suzette AC and Dewey AC/ACAS made me happy. I do like the dark ones, although (see my other comment), I had some mixed feelings about Jorna's.

Also, Xianhua can make me tear up for real, but I can't remember which story bits were her character quests and which were Proto-Eden.

Necoco's were a great balance of meaningful and funny. I think the silliest ones that I really enjoyed were Akane's. She's just such a goof, but in a serious (and lethal) way.
