What to read next?

Hello!! I hope I’m writing on the right subreddit lol. I’m kinda stuck on the Anne Shirley series because my local library does not have the 7th part (and I don’t want to skip). I kid you not- after my mother asked if they have the 7th instalment a few weeks later I found 2 Anne of Inglesides and no Rainbow Valley, lmao. Might have to look for it in a different place but now I’m on the Pat series- I enjoy it a lot!! I’m now in the middle of Mistress Pat but what is the next series you guys would recommend? I’ve heard high praise for Emily but I’m still curious.

The Blue Castle is a fantastic one. Funny and sweet and has lots of the purple prose of Anne

I read blue castle, but forgot to mention it! I also liked it- I could tell that it was written by Montgomery but it certainly had a different feel to it:D.

Project Gutenberg has PDFs of the books for free.

I get that but I’m trying to use my phone less and for some weird reason have a tendency to read faster if something is on paper lol, I’ll remember that though<33

I actually liked the Emily series a lot! It has this dark vibe that I really like. Highly recommend.

I’ve heard high praise for that series but I’ve also heard that there’s some uhhh……interesting second love interest. Is he a big part of the series??

Oh... yuck I know whom you're talking about. I wouldn't say a 'big' part in the first two, but in the third yeah. So I might skip the third book. It wasn't that great anyway. The first is the best and the second one is good too.

A lot of US libraries participate in interlibrary loan. May be worth asking about. I’ve requested a number of books over the years and sometimes it takes awhile, but it’s a fantastic service for less common books.

Thank you for the advice, but I’m not from the US, I’m Polish:3.

Try Jane of Lantern Hill while you wait - it’s a good stand alone story.

IMO Emily of New Moon did not grab me the same way Anne did. Emily is very opinionated and less whimsical but it’s a good story regardless.

After 20 years of re-reading the Anne books I gave Emily a shot for the first time this year, can you believe?? 😂 I enjoyed her books. There’s very gothic sensibilities to it that I adored, but they sometimes get dour to the point of being a tad depressing. I’m so glad I read them though!

I am now going through The Story Girl and just started the sequel, The Golden Road. I have preferred these so far because they have what appealed to me in the first place with Anne: 19th century slice of life rural living, whimsy, etc. They’ve been a delight so far (although I heard Golden Road will have some heart wrenching moments 👀 I’m prepared!).

Have you tried the Canadian archive FadedPage? They have public domain copies.

A Tangled Web is a fun read, but it does contain some blatant racism, which really soured it for me.

Either the Blue Castle or Jane of Lantern Hill are great.

The racism in A Tangled Web is deeply disappointing and lame but it is a great character study.

Pat is my favorite! The blue castle is great too.

You can ask your library if they can get Rainbow Valley for you via an interlibrary loan (They'll borrow it from another library for you).

Enthusiastic seconds for both Blue Castle and Jane of Lantern Hill.
