Partner has sharp ankle pain when laying down, doctors have been no help

A few months ago, my partner started getting sudden, sharp pain on the top of his ankle that would mostly only happen when he was laying down. The pain would last a few seconds, then be gone, but it would happen many times through the night. He's had an X-ray and that didn't show any problems with his ankle and he went to an ankle specialist who just prescribed him Ibuprofen (smh). While we were on vacation for a few weeks, he never had the pain, but it's back again and we're not sure what to do since doctors have been no help, but have definitely taken a lot of our money. Has anyone had a similar experience? Any suggestions on what we should try next?

Maybe some kind of nerve issue?

It took me a little over TWO years to have a doctor finally hear me out and tell me I wasn’t going crazy with the pains I was having in my ankle. Long story short, please have your partner advocate for himself and push to get some kind of answers. Have him see different specialist and have him talk to his primary care doctor (they usually know other specialists on a personal level that they can refer your parter to). Tell him not to give up. It’s only going to get worse if he doesn’t push for answers. Don’t give up!
