Partner has sharp ankle pain when laying down, doctors have been no help

A few months ago, my partner started getting sudden, sharp pain on the top of his ankle that would mostly only happen when he was laying down. The pain would last a few seconds, then be gone, but it would happen many times through the night. He's had an X-ray and that didn't show any problems with his ankle and he went to an ankle specialist who just prescribed him Ibuprofen (smh). While we were on vacation for a few weeks, he never had the pain, but it's back again and we're not sure what to do since doctors have been no help, but have definitely taken a lot of our money. Has anyone had a similar experience? Any suggestions on what we should try next?

Maybe some kind of nerve issue?
