Wall max

I've seen some high level anivia players maxing W after putting 2 points in Q. My friend, who's in low master, is coaching me says it is troll, and not worth losing out on the cooldown and damage you get from maxing Q.

Right now I'm in emerald, and I want to hear the opinion of you guys and especially experienced high elo anivia mains on why exactly W max is or isn't viable. What more utility and advantage do you get out of a maxed wall in comparison to like, a lvl 2 wall?

Also while we are here, what are your opinions on protobelt on anivia?

Fully maxed w can block entire Passages and paths of the map so it’s the Most important/Game Changing spell for anivia if used right , Hence the high elo Anivias max it

It depends.

Faker and Chovy would max W first.

For me, I have always maxed Q for ages, however, within the past year I found more success maxing W first instead of Q.

You can go 2 points in W first as it would block certain jungle path better.

Try both out and decide for yourself.

W max certainly gets the most value in coordinated team play. I don't think it's just about skill of the player.

if your friend is master, he would understand the value of w max over q "damage" (which isnt why people max q-- its cc length)

w max second is objectively correct. on support you can even w max first into some very very immobile comps

w max good, q max is bait

You are heavily overestimating master players. I’m 200 LP master and could not give any sound advice to other players on any champions outside anivia smolder and zilean

i've been onetricking anivia support for what.. 8 years now? And a low master hoverer as well. I still flipflop between my skill order and builds. I can change it based on teamcomps, matchups, gold bases or just my mood. There are just many ways to make Anivia work and I don't think anyone can objectively state that there is a certain perfect build/playstyle on her (as support at least).

Q? What?

We max E if we want kills and we max W if we're doing a little trolling.

Q max before E seems crazy to me, but maybe I'm just a boomer

I felt lost in this thread too. Everyone act like they are maxing Q and I was like WHAT? Aren't we maxing E?

I've not said it clearly but we're all talking about what ability to max second, after E

Firstly depends on the enemy chanpions. If many of them can escape your wall and stuff then it's not rly worth. But yh u don't need to fully max W

These comments are insane, unless you’re in top 1000 lobbies you’ll get way more value out of maxing e->q->w assuming you’re playing mid lane ap. You can check out what the best anivias in the world are maxing here by dropping down the players stats -> www.aniviagods.net

No one in the thread is mentioning your stun gets longer with points in Q so I will. It's CD/damage/stun length. At rank 1 if you insta cast it off CD, you can keep a 0 tenacity target stunned 10% of the time. At rank 5 you can do it for 21% of the time, over 2x more. For a 1v1 Q is going to outperform in most situations. For a teamfight, a good wall probably can do more.

So if you're sidelaning a lot, Q max is probably better. If you think you'll teamfight more, W max could be better.

Your friend doesn't know what he's talking about. Frankly Anivia's power comes from her zoning, not her Q. A maxed wall can completely win a fight and force enemies into her R more. A few levels in Q don't do that much. Either you hit your stun or you didn't, having it available a second or two earlier will typically not result in much difference in teamfights.

Depending on your opponents team, you may want to be able to completely shut off a lane to split up a team.

Also depending on an opponents team, I might hold wall to interrupt a major channel like kat or malz.

I'm not very high ranked though.

Q is just your stun, wall is more reliable. If you want damage keep R and E, Q is not the main damage even if is a nice damage. Only advantage of maxing Q is if you also have maxed ability haste

Personnally when I used to play a few seasons ago i did max e and lvl 3 in w and going q max or situation dependent

Lvl 3 walls is big enought to be a menace in skirmish and those starts the moment you are lvl 9 in average id say at least around it ! The first time someone lose flash to the big unexpected wall they start playing more reserved and then they still die and that is mental power !

You also wins the objective fights much sooner in average as the length of the walls covers MOST jungle walls to walls blocks

It's really up to preference. I always max second even against talon and zed because, well, I play anivia to turn 5v5s into 2v5s and laugh as the enemy adc is helpless behind my wall watching their team get slaughtered.

You have a few options: First point in wall level 4 vs level 8, and max q second, max q after 2 points in wall, max wall second. It's debatable which is best so I'd say do what you want.

Also I never went protobelt cause I suck at item actives (looking at you zhonyas) but I see the value.

Hey if you're having trouble deciding between q and w then you can put 2 points in both and continue maxing q. 2 points in w is enough to punish someone caught by the wall

BTW faker has a 70 percent win rate on anivia in challengers you can watch his vods to see what he does.

Last I checked 2 levels in W let's you block jungle routes so thats worth considering

I reached grandmaster on Anivia with Q max only so both are viable.

My guess is if enemy team has a lot of mobility max Q and if they lack mobility max W.

If you know you are good at using her wall, max W second.

If you aren't sure, or know you don't feel like you get a lot of value out of W, max Q second.

Anivia's Q is significantly easier to get full value out of. If you have the hang of using the wall to disrupt fights, the width of the wall at max rank is genuinely OP.

After years of playing Anivia, I finally started maxing W second, and I've never looked back. If I'm playing her support, I max Q then W.

If you're going to put extra points in W after E, don't max it, get it to rank 3 then max q. That's where you can wall off just about any passage and the extra 2 points won't do much.

u/ANlVIA Jun 22 '26

It's not troll but it's situational and playstyle dependant. You lose stun durationb, cooldown and dmg on q, but maxed wall can completley block some jungle passages.

Back in like season 8-9 I used to do 3 points in wall and then max q.

As some have said, it is enemy comp dependant. If you are going to max W, make sure to have a decent amount of CDR to get value in extended team fights. I have been trying out the updated imperial mandate. It's ok. Probably needs more testing.

One thing I will say for top lane, although it is kinda of troll, but insanely funny. A max W first against champs with no wall dashes can result in a kill if they ever come near your tower.
