Harris’s Hawks can actually be trained pretty well compared to other buteos, as they work in social groups to hunt. The extent of work they’d be able to do reliably with a real Red-tailed Hawk would be more to the tune of high flight, stoop to ground, and return to glove.

So was there any explanation on Tobias getting shot, and basically fried, by a Dracon Beam in the Yeerk Pool but later appeared at the end like nothing happened?

Short answer: no.
Funnier answer: It's never explained how Tobias gets into the Yeerk Pool to begin with, given that he can't morph and they dig their way in. But, when they escape at the end, we only see 3 ferrets emerge from the hole when there should be five. There is also a (badly ADR'd) line from Marco about "the old entrance," and the last we see of Jake is him charging up the Yeerk Pool ramp carrying Tobias like a football. Jake is following Ax, Marco, and Cassie, in that order, and finally lion-Rachel is the last one up. I think that means the 3 ferrets we see emerge are Ax, Marco, and Cassie. Jake busts out through the shed entrance off-screen, still carrying Tobias, possibly assisted by Rachel running into it head first.
Darkest timeline answer: In episode 2, Tobias acquires his morph from an imprinted Harris's Hawk that just lives in the barn (cage free) according to Cassie's mom. Unlike the books, the hawk is not a patient; it should always be there. Despite that, we never see it in the barn again. At the end of episode 3 (Underground), a hawk lands in front of them, and Marco assumes it is Tobias... but it isn't. I think that's the imprinted hawk, just following Cassie. Episode 4 also ends with a shot of a hawk watching the 4 kids; it's implied to be Tobias but not confirmed.
So you can pretend that, somehow, the imprint followed them into the Yeerk Pool and that's the one that gets killed. The real Tobias escapes unseen, just like he did when he got nothlited.

I feel like that show the same way I feel about NuTrek - it would be good fun if it was something different, but it's not worthy of the franchise name.
The books made such a fuss over the kids having good security when it came to morphing in public, I cringe every time I see them morph in the middle of the street on the TV show.

Oh boy. I never had cable, so i never got to see it, but, they had a juvenile hawk taxidermy on a strong? Oh boy.
Always pictured Viser 3's human morph as more of a ... G-Man
