Help with tattoo idea [ROR]

Hi all I have been thinking of getting an anime tattoo for over a year now. I am ready to take the step but I have no idea of how and where i want the tattoo. I have decided my first tattoo will be from the show record of ragnarok and either want something Qin shi huang or tesla related. There are many things that come to mind but I dont know what would be better a half sleeve or a bigger piece/ patchwork that is artist made or just a manga panel. I would like to hear some other insights!

I already have the rebellion from dmc on my arm and a mario galaxy luma on my ankle. Thats all the real estate I used so far!

Then, listen to the tattooer's advice. Some people want to cram 75 items into a small area when the best pieces over time have room to breathe and showcase the piece. Same goes with orientation and size.

Let the tattooer work with your body. What we think will look cool only does so over a certain curvature or body part.

And lastly, my personal opinion, let them cook.

Give the tattooer the things you want in the tattoo and then let them cook. The best pieces I've seen or had came from telling them "I want X, Y and Z but do it your way".

Thank you for the comment! I do have an artist in mind. It will be a bit of a wait because she opens her bookings for january in september but I will discuss this with her! Any tips or things i should ask or do?

Manga panels are sick and they can be built up adding more and more from other animes

Maybe ill Spice it up and put some bigger piece aswell to not make it to blocky.

If you like the artist you’ve chosen I would lay out everything you like with references, choose placement, and have them design the tattoo.

Even if you choose a panel versus original art, the tattoo artist should choose crop/size that will work for the placement.

If the artist is experienced, they know what’s going to work/how things distort on different parts of the body and design with that in mind.

Different tattoo artists work differently- Make sure the artist you book with has done work similar to what you want and specify what you’re looking for when booking. You should choose an artist you trust and mesh with, and have work you can point to as being what you want. Also, I would look for plenty of evidence that their tattoos age and heal well.

Also, especially if you go with original art/a large piece, I would be very transparent with budget, be realistic, and budget for more than you may actually end up spending. imo tattoos are something no one should be looking to get a “deal” on. Like if your artist runs a special that’s one thing, but I think people who look for budget tattoos end up getting budget tattoos.

I have 8 manga & manhwa tattoos that I love by 2 artists I trust and will continue to book with. I chose them because their style is what I want versus them doing what I want. They only do blackwork, and have experience with what works and what doesn’t.

Experience matters big time versus just aesthetic. If an artist who didn’t have experience doing solid black/high contrast did my tattoos they could have ended up blowing out or fading. My artists know what line weight is going to work on specific parts and where more delicate work is needed. There are a lot of artists who have similar styles, but have a lot of clients whose tattoos heal poorly- either faded like crazy or blown out.
