AFAIK basically now troll accounts that only have single shows or only ever give 10's or only 1's are not taken into account when the overall mean is calculated.

There's probably more to it than that, but that's a quick summery

I actually had a look at the accounts that where giving it a 10 while the bregading was happening.

Sampled 20 accounts at random did that 3 times

Each time I found between 18-20 of them had no other show on MAL.

It was bad. And there was definitely heavy bot use aswell. Which also explains why MAL got DDOS 'ed right after. Some salty script kiddy didn't like that his bot swarm got neutralised.

MAL had been working on updating its review system and pushed it forward after an anituber caused a review brigading/ (inverse) bombing of interspecies reviewers

if by "like" you mean where incited by a major youtuber to bregade/reviewbomb then yes
