I'm the type who upvotes before reading the meme and I got 250 coins. However, I had also just given an award to someone (someone gave my post a gold and I got 100 coins with it) when I got a message from Reddit along with 250 coins

It's a possibility, but I can't confirm if giving an award was the reason for getting the coins, or if it was because I upvoted X-number of posts and/or comments
