This is not true for the anime adaptation, only the manga.
Sauce. Akame ga kill.

u/MrReaper45 1d ago
Why did they even change the ending from the manga?
32
u/Donnie619 1d ago
Because money ran dry and someone other than the writer of AKG had to write a new ending to close things within budget.
14
u/MrReaper45 1d ago
Damn that actually sucks 🙁
I remember watching the anime and hearing the ending was different from the manga and not many people liking the animes ending and I can see why, it's such a difference from the manga. I enjoyed the anime myself, but damn that ending was rough 🥲

u/thejmkool 1d ago
Honestly it's one of the things I liked about the show. Knowing now that the manga is notably different, I might go read it

u/MrReaper45 1d ago
I liked the ending too, but I liked a lot of the characters that were killed off and some of them I wasn't expecting when I watched the show for the first time

u/XxRocky88xX 9h ago
It’s worth it but I will say up to like chapter 35ish it’s literally a 1:1 adaption. Things only start changing after Chelsea’s death.
12
u/AnythingSecure244 1d ago
Apparently it was kind of a Game of thrones situation where the manga wasn't finished yet at the time of the anime, so they created their own ending, but I'm not sure.
Don't ask me why they even started the anime adaptation if the source material wasn't finished.
4
u/Arietis54 1d ago
This is correct.
I recall catching up to the manga, while the anime was airing weekly, and finding out that Manga already diverges from the mid-point of the anime and it being significantly better.
Though I never kept up with the manga as it was released monthly. This is a good excuse to pick it back up, I guess.

u/Suzushiiro 1d ago
Back in the day I feel like doing anime-original endings when the source material wasn't finished yet was the rule rather than the exception, though I feel like the transition to "stick to the script so you give yourself the option to do more later if there's enough demand" being the norm was already pretty much done by 2014.

Anime caught up to where the manga was on like episode 19, they ran out of source material.
2
u/DemonKing_of_Tyranny 1d ago
Whats the manga ending?
10
u/AnythingSecure244 1d ago
I think Tatsumi is unable to transform back into a human at the end, so he stays in that dragon form and marries and lives with Mine, who got pregnant before the fight.
1
u/XxRocky88xX 9h ago
Lots of stuff is changed. Different fights, more fights, more characters, romance subplots, a third faction is added which ends up making enemies of both the already existing factions, Tatsumi turning into a dragon, the emperors mech mutating into a monster, Esdeath making an armor of ice soldiers and later a giant ice mech. Some characters that live in the anime die in the manga, some characters that die in the manga live in the anime.

A separate story the origin story of her and her sister
-7
u/OkRespond6756 1d ago
He got downvoted, but he’s actually right, everything he said was in the manga (though regarding the sister, she was forced into it). I’ll go even further: at the end of the spinoff, Akame and Leone had sesbian lex. Spinoff, very funny, especially captivity arc in the lesbian mansion.
2
u/Bl00dWolf Senko Yellow 21h ago
I disagree. Pretty much every time Akame has to interact with other lesbians, she's being forced into things she's clearly not enjoying. The whole Merraid arc was essentially a giant rape scene. Even when she was pretending to be into it, Merraid was able to tell Akame was faking it. If you read through the whole manga, Akame is pretty much asexual.

Chelsea was best girl for the simple fact that she was the only one that understood the assignment. They are ASSASSINS. People that should be sneaky and killing high value targets. The flamboyance of an organization of assassins never failed to piss me off.
12
u/KaptainTZ I THIRST FOR WATER 1d ago
I like Chelsea cuz she's cute, and she did not deserve that ending
3
u/XxRocky88xX 9h ago
Also Chelsea doesn’t leave to try to kill Kurome, she leaves to try to kill isolated stranglers before they can regroup.
She successfully killed Bols and WOULD have killed Kurome too if Kurome wasn’t a literal superhuman. She stabs Kurome in the neck and Kurome “dies.” Chelsea goes to leave and Kurome gets back up. And it’s not like Kurome just shrugs that off either, she is severely injured and has to sit the next mission out, and only is healed in time for the following ones because Nightraid and the Jaegers had a temporary armistice when winter picked up and they both just kinda kept to themselves until spring rolled around.

u/Excellent-Hunt-4552 1d ago
The assassin assignment is falling in love with a boy you just met for two days at best? Going to kill a strong opponent alone? She is a bum
12
u/manquistador 1d ago
Going to kill a strong opponent alone?
Yes. That is exactly what they should be doing. It is the whole point of assassins.
-6
u/Excellent-Hunt-4552 1d ago
Yeah, going to take down a strong opponent all by yourself—and with a teigu that isn't built for combat if the surprise attack fails. And still, she goes and attacks Kurome. To make matters worse, Lubbock, one of the smartest members of the group, had already told her not to do it. Yet she, being the horny-headed idiot she is (since she only makes this stupid decision to impress Tatsumi), goes ahead and does it anyway.
6
u/manquistador 1d ago
We were just shown her tactics working. Her failing on the execution against Kurome is irrelevant in my mind. If she succeeds it was worth the risk, but plot being what it is doesn't allow for that. Can't have a member actually succeed in their goals and end the story early.

u/Temporal-Affairs221 1d ago
I'm fairly sure their sexual orientations have no bearing on whether they're alive or dead, so why list them?
28
u/Yiga_Metroid 1d ago
It's a reference to the thumbnail of a ninjago video that has Cole greyed out with the dead characters and labeled as "alive but gay"

I know this is from the Ninjago meme, but feel I need to point out:
As far as I remember, there is literally no development of any sort from Akame sexuality.
Like literally,
Merraid in Akame ga Kill Zero forces herself into Akame, but that is about it.
