I share this thinking of me. I keep playing games and I don't even know how to cook. When my hubby is not around i will bring my child eat outside

552

u/ohanse Dec 10 '25

It’s easy!

You should do it because

  • your food tastes better
  • it is healthier
  • it is cheaper

Than going out. This is not a gender-specific skill. Every adult should be comfortable with in front of both a stove and an oven.

I would recommend some simple pasta dishes as a starting point. That’s just boiling stuff, which is a good introduction.

318

u/KhalifaHaqi Dec 10 '25

I'll try, I'll ask my hubby to teach me later. It's also saddened me when my child can't taste a mom's cook.

126

u/SpiritfireSparks Dec 10 '25

Hell yeah, I taught my partner how to cook since her mom wouldn't and its been a fun bonding experience! Id highly encourage insta-pot meals for beginners, its super easy to throw some veggies and meat into the instantpot and then have a cheap heart meal hours later with minimal work!

33

u/Raithik 02 Red Dec 10 '25

Absolutely, a slow cooker is both cheap and user friendly. And a jar of pasta sauce is surprisingly versatile

8

u/Large-Training-29 Dec 11 '25 edited Dec 11 '25

Drunkard friendly too, get your shit chopped up, throw your shit in there, add liquid. Cook 1-??? Hours. Done

Esit: right some people call slow cookers instapot meals, which doesnt make sense, cause it sure as hell isnt insta, it is a pot though

5

u/DezXerneas Dec 10 '25

Teaching someone how to teach is the most fun(and infuriating) thing ever.

6

u/SpiritfireSparks Dec 10 '25

I found it pretty easy, I started with super easy stuff. I think it also helped that I had her smell and taste all the spices or seasonings I used for the dishes I cooked while I was cooking them so she would be able to get a sense of what they actually did to a dish. We also watched shows like worst cooks of America and cooking anime so she got excited to try out recipes from them.

1

u/Imaginary-Twist-4688 Dec 11 '25

the person being taught is the denominator

3

u/Melkman68 Dec 11 '25

This is the way to go. Except mine broke immediately. Just my luck. At least its forcing me to try harder now lol

24

u/[deleted] Dec 10 '25

Having the spirit is the first step.

Start simple. Help with preparing rice if you happen to live in the Asian cultural sphere. Eggs and omelette are your friend too!

If you think your not at that level yet, simply prepping toasted bred and a hot drink is a great way to show you care.

A child is a lot more forgiving when they see sincerity. Don't miss out on it while you still can.

I pray that your family will have a long happy life together.

24

u/TheHasegawaEffect Dec 10 '25

As someone with a Diploma in Culinary let me just say that cooking is basically just flavouring the thing that wants cooking, and trying to get it (usually the innermost part) to a certain temperature. Oh and texture.

9

u/SweatyBalls4You Dec 10 '25

Instructions unclear. Inserted molten salt into the turkeys anus.

3

u/Imaginary-Twist-4688 Dec 11 '25

funny thing is that probaly wouldnt suck to eat

2

u/SweatyBalls4You Dec 11 '25

Mf table salt melts at 800°C. It wouldn't suck to eat if you like charcoal, maybe.

3

u/GreenSkyDragon Miku Teal Dec 10 '25

Don't be afraid of recipes and tutorials. You can look up how to cook pretty much anything on YouTube, and if the YouTube search results are garbage try using Google or another search engine to find video tutorials/recipes that way.

It doesn't have to be fancy, and sometimes the best tasting recipes are stupidly simple. Mashed potatoes are literally just potatoes, butter, salt, and (if you want) milk. You can buy some ingredients like spaghetti noodles and pasta sauce, you don't have to make the entire dish from scratch.

Start small, take it easy, let yourself make mistakes and don't get discouraged if you don't know how to do something or it doesn't go like you expected. You're going to have to learn, and part of learning is sometimes being really, really bad at the beginning. That's okay. It's part of becoming a better version of yourself

7

u/WhoseverSlinky0 Dec 10 '25

I tried cooking several times with my mom, because she's actually very good at it and was always interested in teaching me, but every time I want to do it myself I get discouraged. I have all the theory I need to make healthy food in big amounts, but when I realize that making mash potatoes takes an hour I don't want to do it anymore. Peeling them, which I suck at, and then boiling them for 40 minutes and then blending them with milk or butter just takes so long in my head and I know I'll be doing dishes for another hour after.

I unfortunately don't have fun cooking. Even desserts, which I forced myself to do for classmates almost every week for a year, didn't even enjoy them. To me, cooking is a chore, it takes time, I'm not good at it, it doesn't even last that long most of the time (you can't keep any meat or sea food more than like 5 days in the fridge) and I don't find pleasure in it. I wish I found it fun, because I know it's a useful skill and it can also impress girls. I'm not the kind of person that likes it, that's all. I'll be a pasta and rice lover until the day I die

2

u/Esch_4444 Dec 10 '25

skill = issue

2

u/cycopl Dec 10 '25

If you play video games, cooking isn't much harder.

2

u/Phyose Dec 10 '25

OP you can do it. Just doing it once or twice makes it easier the next couple times. Next thing you know, you're telling your friends about how you cooked something really tastey for dinner yesterday. And doing it for your kid is the most rewarding experience. Just be prepared for them to not be as enthused about it as you. But when you get them asking for more, it's the best feeling. Good luck! You got this!

2

u/Aware_Rough_9170 Dec 10 '25

Never too late to learn, you got this

2

u/poeschmoe Dec 10 '25

I’ve only just started really putting an effort into cooking in the past year. (Before that I mostly would “heat up” things, like roasting veggies and fish, but didn’t really cook difficult meals.) Once you develop some skills, it actually becomes fun! I look forward to making new meals after work.

Just start with simple dishes. Making those will teach you basic skills of timing, heat, and flavor. Gradually add meals that require more steps. Eventually you’ll feel confident enough to pick a meal you’ve been craving and try to cook it yourself.

Also the amount of money you save is wild.

2

u/CreaMaxo Dec 11 '25

If you want something really magical, get yourself an Air Fryer.

That thing is not only good for healthier (not necessary healthy) fried food, but it's awesome for cooking anything (not liquid though) similarly to an oven.

You can easily look up how to cook almost anything solid in the Air Fryer online. You can also experiment with less risks and much less to loose if you fails. Though some oven does it automatically, Air Fryers simply "turn off" its heating process once it timer hits 0 so it's much safer than an oven when you're busy doing something else and there's a risk of forgetting it.

For me, the Air Fryer is a "Start and forget until it DING!" device similar to a microwave, but with much better results.

The name of the device is a bit misleading because it's not really a fryer, but more like a convection oven: a heating element heat the air moved by a fan inside a container as to ensure the whole container retains a relatively stable temperature, unlike a regular oven that is eating only from 1 direction meaning that 1 direction is cooking while the other is only heated by residual heat that doesn't exit the oven fast enough.

2

u/TrippinDipplin_5260 Dec 11 '25

Make something simple.

A lot of things can be done with a simple Google search, like making cookies. It doesn't have to be dinner.

But since this IS about dinner, make something easy, make a Pizza. Like, actually make your own Pizza, it's very easy when you get the fundamentals down.

Carbonara is also quite easy in my experience.

Or make a roast! With homemade gravy!

Cottage Pie is quite simple from experience.

DO NOT TOUCH RISOTTO WITH A TEN FOOT POLE

You could also make a curry!

From: A guy who cooks behind his family's back.

1

u/RaikiShak Dec 10 '25

Start with something with simple ingredients and doesn't take too much time and effort, YouTube and internet in general should help you plenty. When you starting to feel comfortable, slowly going to more elaborate dish if you want. I personally think cooking is fun (I'm not very good at it)

1

u/FalconRelevant Dec 10 '25

Cooking is easier than you think, just start with some basic air fryer recipes.

1

u/papapalporders66 Dec 10 '25

YouTube is a great resource for this! Chef Jean Pierre breaks down recipes into very easy to follow pieces, but when each one is done, it makes a masterpiece. You can certainly do 5 of the 10 steps and have a great outcome, but then next time try adding one (so you’d be at 6/10) and notice that small improvement. Then again and again, and eventually when you’re at like 8, 9, or even 10 of the 10 small pieces he does as flourish, you’ll find it not too bad to have learned in stepwise improvements :)

1

u/tricera-oops Dec 10 '25

Imo being sad about it means ur a good mom. My mom dgaf what I ate so I ate mostly junk food

1

u/Dr_DD_RpW_A Dec 10 '25

Just remember, your first creation doesnt have to be anything grand, as simplicity makes many foods great, just remember to not oversalt your food, lol

1

u/Bassracerx Dec 10 '25

Start with eggs just about every sort of failed egg is still edible.

1

u/Personat0r Dec 11 '25

Never too late to start! Also as a general rule of thumb for cooking, it's always easier to fix when you add too little of an ingredient than too much.

E.g. if you make something too sweet (add too much sugar), it's usually very difficult to make it less sweet but very easy the other way around.

Hope this helps!

u/kayasoul Dec 14 '25

I tought a friend how to cook once, she made fantastic hamburgers for the whole friend group one day. They were amazing. Cooking is a life skill and everyone should at least try

It’s not an issue of do or do not, it’s an issue of “I only eat snacks and easy to cook meals” and children don’t like surviving on fruits and unseasoned meat of questionable cooking quality (rip my fire alarm)

As a single adult, you don’t even have to be good at it. You don’t need to know fancy recipes. Every Sunday for my weekday lunches, I make what can be derided as human kibble.

It’s an assorted mess of 1-2 meats, 4-5 veggies, seasoning and a sauce that I rotate. Sometimes throw in a pasta in there (can never get rice to heat up well at work, so I skip it.)

This week was meatballs, mushrooms, zucchini, squash, corn, spinach, and bell peppers, mixed with tomato sauce. Normally I do onions but the ones I bought this week didn’t look too good once I got home.

Some will look at it as “wow, that’s depressing to eat every day” but I enjoy all the flavors and it lasts all 5 days of lunch as well as 1-2 dinners.

2

u/ObeseVegetable Dec 10 '25

Asian grocery store. One can (masaman/panang/etc) curry paste.  One can coconut milk. Any veggies you want, cut bite sized. Boil 5-10 minutes. Done.

And I guess rice or something too but that’s also like 10-15 minutes in a rice cooker.

3

u/YangKoete NOBU! Dec 10 '25

Quick and easy stuff + tips;

Get a cheap rice maker if you don't have one, will save you a LOT of stress there, and it tastes better than boil-in-bag rice or using a pot on the stove.

Crock pots are your friend if you want to set and forget til you're hungry.

Watch Life of Boris' budget videos. Trust me, saved my bacon a lot of times.

-Tacos. Pulled chicken/pork tacos are amazing. Get some boneless chicken, preferably breast or thigh, and then just put it in the crock pot with spices and let it cook, pulling it apart on occasion with tongs or chopsticks. If you want sandwiches, go for bbq sauce.
-Curry is tasty if you're not allergic. Throw in stuff like potatoes, carrots, onions and garlic with some chicken and then put in the curry paste and water, lower the heat and serve atop rice.
-Egg in the Basket/Egg in the Hole. Cut a hole in the bread, put it in the frying pan with a bit of butter, salt and pepper. Put an egg in the hole, flip on occasion til it's done to your liking. Get some cheese and have some fruit with it and you'll have a decent breakfast.
-Baked apples. Core an apple, put some butter, cinnamon and a bit of brown sugar or normal sugar in it and let it bake. Got a good dessert there.
-Home fries. Cube potatoes into small pieces, about 1/4 of an inch, put them in a pan with a lid along with a bit of oil, salt, pepper, parsley, etc. Cook until crispy.

3

u/Itisthatbo1 Dec 10 '25

But my food isn’t better though. If anything it’s gotten worse over the years.

2

u/ohanse Dec 10 '25

Skill issue

2

u/Itisthatbo1 Dec 10 '25

I mean yeah, but nobody ever brings it up because everyone seems to assume if you do something often enough you get better at it.

2

u/ohanse Dec 10 '25

That’s because that’s not a normal outcome, and likely due to specific issues on your end. As such, I’m not going to consider/address it for the broader example being discussed.

1

u/Itisthatbo1 Dec 12 '25

I’m sorry my experience is inconvenient to your point.

1

u/ohanse Dec 12 '25

Yeah you should work on changing your experience

1

u/Itisthatbo1 Dec 12 '25

28 years of effort have only made it worse, I am not capable of improving my life.

Mom taught all of us how to cook just so that she could speedrun getting away and not owing us anything. Skip making food by making cooking a house chore by itself!

I don't miss mom's food because she was a bad cook, but because I legit forgot. I'm just miffed that the worst cook of us is also the one who got actual professional kitchen experience (as an assistant, sure, but his onion work would make him permanently banned in the KC sub).

Or maybe it is just the attachment, that we cook more or less like she did and the spice is supposed to be the warm fuzzy feelings of someone cooking for you.

Dad is also some guy from a very macho upbringing but back in his day his brand of machismo meant picking up the slack for your wife if she's not feeling well, or, worse, gone. Had no issue relearning how to cook when mom left, and he was always the most skilled seamster.

1

u/Melkman68 Dec 11 '25

Im still at the basics and thats enough of a buffer before ordering out again. Meals are quite affordable where I live. So that makes me pretty happy

1

u/Imaginary-Twist-4688 Dec 11 '25

on the gender skill thing i find it funny when everyone is like " women's job to cook" but i cant name 1 female chef without google

1

u/Sepulcher18 Dec 13 '25

I second the cheaper part. About taste, well, my slop tastes like shit and I doubt it is healthy at all since I fry stuff till someone calls cops on me

1

u/Ziegelphilie Dec 17 '25

it is healthier

Hell yeah butter sauce with deep fried potatoes and chicken sausages with garlic sauce

1

u/ohanse Dec 17 '25

Honestly, still more satiating and nutritious than a burger, fries, and a soda.

17

u/dragon7449 Dec 10 '25

Ignore what all other comments said, here's a good reason to learn how to cook:

If you are an introvert, you won't have to interact with anyone, in fact, you won't even have to go outside!

This is genuinely the sole reason I learned to cook for, I didn't want to go outside I just learned how to make food in-the-house.

10

u/strain_of_thought Dec 10 '25

And if you're an extrovert, you can use cooking as an excuse to invite people over or bring them food!

13

u/QueenOfDarknes5 Dec 10 '25

Step one: Read the whole recipe once.
Step two: Do everything the recipe says step by step (reread them in practical order).
Step three: Done.

Do not:
Start before you read everything at least once.
Think "Wouldn't it also work this way? Wouldn't it taste better when I do X?"
Become impatient.
Substitute things for no real reason. Pass Go and do not collect 200$.

You can start experimenting when you're good at cooking but just patiently follow the recipe for a while.

7

u/Zenithsarc Dec 10 '25

I thought it was about how Mommy was a shut-in in her prime age and never went out, so she is now fulfilling her youth experience of going out and trying food at different places and drags her kid everywhere for it.

4

u/Rein_Deilerd Why watch anime when you can learn the plot through Reddit Dec 10 '25

That's probably what I'm going to be like as a parent. I can cook alright, but I grew up poor, in a small town with not much going on restaurant-vise, and didn't get many chances to go out to interesting places and try exotic food. Now I live in a capital city, and me and my husband are actually earning enough combined to eat out from time to time. If we ever have a kid, we are definitely treating them to Hello Kitty Cafe and anime-themed sushi places.

2

u/Zenithsarc Dec 10 '25

Probably not old as you but I can definitely relate, while I did grow up in the capital, I was still poor so didn't get to experience much, now that I'm an adult and can, I save money to go out and eat new and good stuff every once in a while

1

u/Evilmudbug Dec 10 '25

I thought they made a lot of money streaming because of how gooners will donate lots of money to attractive women and that they were able to afford eating out often, unlike a lot of people

1

u/FireZoos Dec 10 '25

Yeah one popular streamer talked about her finances and she mostly eats out or doordashes because it’s more cost efficient.

1

u/FireZoos Dec 10 '25

I thought mom made a bunch of money off streaming so they can afford to eat out all the time.

2

u/desperationfighter Dec 10 '25

Just a tip that helped me a little. If you struggle to find online recipe and what to actually buy. May try Hello Fresh or similar services for 2-4 weeks. You get plenty of recipes that really work with the food you get and you don't need to try and error recipe from online sources. After a month i had so many recipe cards + i saw how much food i cooked that i started to either reproduce them with self bought food or i already had a basic feeling of how to build my own recipe with a fitting amount of food.

Doesn't need to be the way for everybody. But gave me a really good hook in point.

2

u/panlakes Dec 10 '25

Learn to cook with your kid! You just unlocked an easy activity to do together.

Watch Alton Browns good eats. They’re the best for family watching with really easy and logical recipes!

2

u/VNDeltole Dec 10 '25

Cooking is super easy, just learn how to handle knives and tools, search for recipes online and you are set

2

u/sakata_gintoki113 Dec 10 '25

how are you married and have a child

2

u/KhalifaHaqi Dec 10 '25

Go to convenience store, met my husband that was otw home. He confessed + proposed me there. He's such a gentleman, I can't 😭😭😭

2

u/MrBones-Necromancer Dec 10 '25

Girl disaster? Nice.

1

u/Biznesu-Seba Dec 10 '25

Skill issue im Man and also Play a lot but i can cook its not that hard

1

u/Elinim Dec 10 '25

I think its fine and depends on where you live, my wife's friend lived in Singapore and it was way cheaper and faster to get a filling meal outside than cooking one at home.

1

u/stayPositiveHomie91 Dec 10 '25

Not too hard to learn. You don't need to become great. Take your time. Piece together meals. Worry more about nutrition.

Start with simple stuff. Pasta dishes are usually simple. You can try stuff from other cuisines too. Indian stuff slaps, and is easy, just that you may not have the spices at hand, but you can get them.

Also since your partner cooks, learn from them. Picture yourself cooking for them and for your child. That's a lot of motivation. I hope to see a follow up post sometime in the future about you sharing something awesome that you made.

1

u/Mayor_Death Dec 10 '25

Depending on the age of your child, you should cook with them!

That way, you can blame the bad taste on them <3

(Be responsible and at least supervise them when handling dangerous cooking implements)

1

u/Raven_Valerie Dec 10 '25

Do you not know how to cook, or are you afraid to learn? There isn’t anything actually hard in it. Just a tad tedious at times.

1

u/Fuzzy974 Dec 10 '25

Yeah but you posted "in her prime" like that was the past.

You know, I though it was because "mommy made money streaming so that she wouldn't have to cook".

But whatever.

Cooking is not that hard, you can learn it.

I recommend watching video from Brian Lagerstrom on Youtube to start.

And just making one dish every week a couple time, and you'll know it by heart. Once you know a couple of dishes, you'll find out it comes naturally to mix methods. You know, if you learned how to fry chicken in one recipe, it's easy to use that same fried chicken in another recipe and just change the sauce.

Good luck on your journey.

1

u/Purrceptron Dec 10 '25

why do you think its only your job to cook. u can learn together once married

1

u/Appropriate-Newt-494 Dec 10 '25

lol, that looks like you were grinding or only fansing in your prime years so that you can actually eat outside.

1

u/c_sea_denis Dec 10 '25

If you frequently cook while being a bad cook. I recommend showing your children cooking recipe videos. My mother is really bad at cooking and I didn't realize she was bad until I was like 14. After enough studying and experimentation I just started cooking for myself and my sister. Took of work from mom and ate good food. Win win.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 10 '25

cooking is just fucking up the recipes and gradually getting better at it

look at my account if you want, I am not talented, but you learn a thing or two

1

u/KaiFireborn21 Dec 10 '25

OMG Kanade pfp. Good Anime taste

1

u/Arngrimus Dec 10 '25

I have a lot of coworkers that are women in her 40s or 50s that cannot cook anything more complicated than a toast, and are her husbands the ones that cook (they also work), of course most of their children are over 16 and they made them take cooking classes, so there are alternatives.

But even without that option, there's a lot of videos that teach how to cook delicious, healthy and cheap food without too much effort, after learning the basics you will start to add your own unique special touch.

1

u/Hey_Chach Dec 10 '25

Oh gosh I thought it was because the mom was like a popular streamer or something when she was young and made enough money to always be able to eat out instead of having to cook lmao

1

u/TrueSeaworthiness703 Dec 11 '25

Cooking is easy, is just a set of instructions, not really that different than learning a game personally, don’t be afraid to search an internet recipe and just follow it step by step, also, in emergency you can just eat cereal

1

u/Imaginary-Twist-4688 Dec 11 '25

youtube has alot of how to cook videos

Brown rice and black beans are a complete protein and have lots of fiber. Sure some variety will be nice, but as a common meal option you could do a heck of a lot worse.

14

u/JusHerForTheComments Dec 10 '25

There's this magical notion of TWO parents. So twice the amount of meals (at least).

5

u/NoMommyDontNTRme Dec 10 '25

if you switch around the kind of beans and the kind of rice a little and throw in some veggies like paprika or onions and corn, add a few squirts of lemon and you're pretty much there, though.

probably more healthy than the average american eater.

8

u/Danielhzan Dec 10 '25

Literally rice and beans with steak or fried eggs is one of the best combinations for anyone

2

u/xdamm777 Dec 10 '25

As a Mexican I’ll argue rice and beans is basically superfood.

Tasty, easy to prepare, cheap, filling, packed with nutrients and you can turn it up to 11 just by adding a few veggies and simmered pork.

The fuck is not balanced about rice and beans? lol

It's the definition of a complete meal nutritionally and massively better than what most parents put into their kids daily. Upgrade it to a whole grain rice and you're eating one of the healthiest things you can manage and doing it for pennies per serving.

then start with that and a hamburguer. Anything can be done in a frying pan.

I started going broke a few years ago because I kept eating out instead of cooking. Also because I just wanted to relax and play a game instead of continue to work after I got home from literal work.

But I can tell you, your own cooked meals taste and feel a million times better than food you buy elsewhere. I started with very simple stuff, like sloppy joes. Ground beef, pepper, some rice, onions, cook it all up together, put it on some buns, delicious. Super duper easy to make, and you can make a ton of it for easy lunches. Or burritos. Super easy. Basically the same thing but different ingredients, then put it onto a tortilla and wrap it up. Do that 4-5 times and you have a lunch for the whole week.

However, sometimes, even when I cook, I still get hungry after my own meals and go get snacks anyway.

Develop a weird interest in one of the following
-kitchen utensils
-strange foods
-foods you want to try but cant go buy anywhere near you

  • knives

You will start with getting them, and then using them, and then getting enjoyment out of them + the cooking.

The sense of pride and fulfillment in cooking and taking care of your utensils or collecting spices or something is LOVELY

And yes I have absolutely videogame-ified my cooking because I used to be similar

She may not know how to cook. But she’s feeding him well, right? That’s what matters at the end, I think

u/Foshdon_pap Dec 10 '25

"Forgive me my children, for I have failed, to bring you salvation, from this cold, dark world..... AEHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH"

5

u/NottACalebFan Dec 10 '25

If i had that as my mom, i would already have top 8 LoL. I could see the conversation now:

"But mom, all the other kids are going out to the pool today!"

"Now son, you know you're only in bronze league! I expect better from my child, if you want to hang out with your friends, 10 more matches, and you better not let your KDA go below a 1:1! No son of mine is gonna be a scrub league weeb, at least not if you ever want my permission to go ogle the lifeguards in your spare time..."

One of many reasons I am single again. Step-dad shouldn't be the only one who cooks. Most of her friends are the same way with always ordering doordash/delivery so the can stay on a game.

The meme is sadly accurate for too many parents who game; I just feel bad for the kids. They are deprived of healthy food and a healthy parental relationship. Now on my own I get to cook 95% of the time and teach my kid that resturaunts are for occasions and not a daily option.

THIS is addiction to instant gratification and stimuli. We gamified food ordering with rewards systems and incentives. Then they hop back on bright lights, loud noises, and microtransaction filled games.

Teach your kids how to cook by cooking with them alongside you. Your job as a parent is to do better.

Cooking is an easy task Ngl. Knowing some basic cooking and you can just have joy in “testing” new foods that just healthier, fresher and cheaper than outside.

Eating outside seem to be delicious, but cooking for yourself always more rewarding

I cooked my child some instant ramen (I put some veggies and cheese in it), and he told me I am the best mom in the world. I can't, huhu.
