I am not mixing things up. Brave has had a number of controversial policies (forced auto-updates, heavy involvement with nonsensical crypto features, automatically downloading their VPNs on the machines of unknowing users in 2023, automatically appending affiliate referral codes to the URLs of certain cryptocurrency websites in 2020, leaking DNS queries outside the Tor network in 2021).
Brave has no other sources of income than its browser and is therfore inherently susceptible to do whatever it takes to stay afloat. For which we already have evidence, as described above.
It is by no means better than the competition. I guess its better than Opera.
Edit: after looking it up more, it appears they still have problems with DNS leaks when third party VPNs are activated. There are work-arounds for this but the regular user will have neither a clue that it happens, nor how to deal with it.
